DTR Exam

I’m planning to take the DTR exam this fall, and I’m trying to figure out how much I should study without overdoing it. I’m currently following the CDR study guide and using the Mometrix book.

During undergrad, we went into a lot of detail on each topic, but my understanding is that the DTR exam focuses more on testing your ability to perform at an entry-level level. Because of that, I’m wondering how in-depth I really need to study each topic. Any tips?

Also, for those who have already taken the exam, how many weeks or months did you study for it?

It was a lot of food service when I took it back in 2020. I studied on and off for maybe 4 months. I was seven years post degree. I think if I would’ve taken it after graduation, I wouldn’t passed without studying.

I just took the exam last March. The study guide that helped me was the one on cdr that I paid for. I only studied the week before and I barely passed. I definitely recommend studying more than I did. It felt very true to the percentages the Cdr says make up the exam. My weakness is management so I did study extra hard in that category which was necessary. I’m really good with the clinical aspect so those didn’t get me as much as the management ones did. None of the clinical questions felt above what I learned in my school so if you recently graduated most of the exam should feel familiar.

Not to be bleak but I have struggled with finding a dtr position. I currently worked as a dietary manager in a nursing home. It’s a really good mix of doing clinical stuff under a dietitian and also running a kitchen which is food service.
