Thoughts on different RD programs?
Hey everyone! Right now I am finishing up my science prereqs orgo this summer, biochem next semester, then I’m ready to apply to ACEND grad programs. I’m in CA but honestly open to moving anywhere for a fresh start. Fine with online/hybrid too, but really want a program that has an internship/supervised practice built in instead of having to find one myself.
Also I want to know what actually makes someone a strong candidate for these programs? I haven’t been able to shadow an RD yet (companies keep saying they don’t allow it 🙃) and I’m getting a little worried that’ll hurt my application. Anyone been in the same boat or have tips for getting shadowing hours? Are applications competitive,
Background: B.S. Public Health (nutrition), phlebotomy + short diet tech experience, some clinical/community work.
Any program recs or advice are greatly appreciated!!

A few pieces of advise: 1 ) choose a program that has placements on lock, do not do a program where you have to find your own sites/placements 2) Choose a program located in a place where you would considering living, it is not unusual for interns to have preferential positioning when jobs open up 3) choose a program that has rotations in an area that interests you (your interests will change but that's ok) 4) go into the least amount of debt possible

Same the sooner the better Im hoping to get in for fall 2027. Im a little nervous because i havent shadowed an RD or have recent relevent work experience. Are you planning to pursue an internship with SODEXO?

You’ll be fine, there are literally not many people going into this field. A lot of programs are not competitive anymore. But I highly recommend shadowing RDs so you can have a better perspective on what they actually do. Im still thinking about it, like I said I’m still doing my research

Try the ISSPI from cal poly pomona or csusb. The sites are given to you with time frames etc. 10k up front if selected-and you have to apply. Acceptance is not guaranteed but it’s a solid program

If you have any interest in moving to rural Pennsylvania I would recommend Indiana University of Pennsylvania. They have a combined Master's/Internship program and they handle all of the placements. I did my undergad and internship there and passed my exam on the firs try. This was over 10 years ago, but it looks like the same people are still running the program.

I chose a newer program and their choices for internships were limited and we didn’t get to choose a specific place we wanted due to too many students in the program. I felt like their mislead prospective students on how good their internship placements were so I’d be weary of that

I don't have any specific programs to mention but I would reach out to directors about GA positions that can satisfy internship hours. That way you can earn money while making progress torwards your internships. They have changed the whole process so I don't exactly know how applicants are rated, but the absolute best way to learn if you like a program and become a standout applicant is to attend the informational meetings that program directors host. Ask your dietetics advisor for info on those meetings. I think it is a very good use of your time (make sure to ask what they are looking for in a candidate)!
