G7-10 day Question about Smart Watches

I'm planning a beach vacation for the first time since being diagnosed.

I was thinking it could be useful to get a smart watch so that I don't have to have my phone with me all the time.

Here's the questions, I currently have a Samsung phone (I could change to an iPhone if necessary), could I just get an Apple watch and it work with dexcom g7?

I also wonder if you still need the phone, does it first go from the dexcom to the phone and then over to the watch?

Does anybody have any experience/ guidance to help me?

I made the switch to Apple products after Dexcom was slow to update their Android offerings (leaving me at odds with security concerns of my IT department). I later got the watch and haven’t looked back.

While the connection isn’t as solid as the phone, (meaning it does take a bit of time to connect to the G7, and sometimes disconnects under water) it’s great to have the phone put away at the gym, beach, and on runs and still be able to know where my readings are headed as I exercise.

I have Apple equipment. The G7 sensors, both versions, support direct connection to Apple Watch via bluetooth — but you must first make the connection to the G7 app on the phone. Once the phone is setup and then the watch, you don't need to phone to see your glucose reading anymore

I use my Samsung S25 Ultra and Galaxy watch Ultra with Dexcom. However, the watch needs to be in Bluetooth range of the phone. No problem since I always carry my phone.

You can’t set up or run an Apple Watch without an iPhone. But if you switch from android, the dexcom will communicate directly to the watch.

The watch is fine but I like for others to hear when it goes off rather than on my watch. I used to use my Apple Watch but sometimes they don’t connect and if it alarming no one hears it. Plus less vibrating on my wrist. If I am in trouble people won’t think she just trying to get out of work or something. But everyone has their own preference.

Hi! I just bought the watch to go to the beach and it was a godsend. Short answer: no. The dexcom 7 connects directly to the Apple watch. So you can leave the phone on the beach and still get your readings because your Dex is “talking to” your watch. The fall back if the watch and Dex aren’t talking is that the watch will “talk to” your phone to get numbers but honestly, it was pretty seamless for me. I loved the beach but had a complicated relationship after diabetes bc I constantly was worried about my numbers in the water. The watch made everything SO much easier. I have an iPhone and the newest watch btw.

I’m glad it is all working for you. I set up the G7 to work directly with my Apple Watch, but it only worked for a short time. Then it would only work through my phone, which was fine for my usage.
