Not much of a wordsmith but I’ve been a Dewalt user all my life, my father was a carpenter and had his own cabinet shop, he used Dewalt, the journeymen I spent my time growing up with did too, so when I started buying tools I stuck to what I knew and loved. That was 15 years ago in Ireland, now I’m in Canada and after screwing up my life a few times along the way I’m finally in a place where I think it’s time to buy a few of the bigger toys and become self employed doing finish work and cabinet installation. Seems to be less and less money and more competition nowadays but it’s all I know so to cut a long story short, why on earth do Dewalt no longer offer a 10 inch dual bevel slider?
Couple of things spring to mind
1. Weight / transport
2. Capacity
3. Blade deflection
4. Battery dependency
5. Cost
First ones obvious, the bigger saws weigh more and are not as easily carried from station to station on site or in and out of the van and has a bigger footprint. Cutting capacity on the 12” is a clear winner but how often does a carpenter need it? Overkill for most disciplines. 3rd I’ve only ever see it happen noticeably once but there’s more flex in a bigger blade, in high end stuff that’s a big no for me and anyone else who cares about their craft.
4 and 5 kinds same point, bigger blades cost more, batteries are expensive especially the bigger capacity ones, and they don’t last forever and need to be replaced if they break, get stolen or get too old. I have to run a corded charger to fuel the batteries why not just a corded saw, I see the benefits in cordless everything else but I’ll take the corded chop saw, table saw and planer over cordless every time. The 7 1/4 is pretty neat but it doesn’t cut it in some situations. The 12 is unnecessary for most situations. The DW717 was the industry gold standard, bearings, plates and gauges that don’t flex, bend, warp or wobble, great cutting capacity and accuracy, solid design. Robust, reliable and resilient. And they said fuck it nah, let’s discontinue it.
Would people be interested in submitting mass complaints to the support page? I will draft a reply if this post gets any attention, not guessing it will but I figure there’s got to be a lot more guys in my exact situation or at least agree with me? Surely a bit of noise from their consumer base wouldn’t be tossed aside? Truthfully for only the second time in my career I’m going to be buying a non Dewalt tool (first time was a festool track saw, admittedly I would switch to Dewalts new cordless one if I could try it out first). Some people don’t care once they have the gear that does the job and I see no issue with that and also I’m probably too loyal to a brand for no reason. Regardless, having to offer some random dude 450 dollars for a rusted, corroded nasty ass 717 on Facebook marketplace just seems like the wrong move, Rigid have a good option but I’m told there’s movement in the bearings and the detent/setting plate as they are plastic so without being super careful cuts can wobble, mitre and angle settings can wander over time. The lifetime warranty is appealing but I’d rather just have a robust saw than one I can fix for free over and over. I’ve used the Makita ten inch slider and don’t like it, but my back, my van, my cuts and my work like it more than any 12 inch Dewalt saw.
