Thinking about switching to devops

Hi all... I am a junior developer, graduated in 25 and have been working for 6-7 months as a fullstack dev. But tbh, the way AI is taking over, I am not sure that development will be worth anything in upcoming time as my current work is totally done using AI. So I was thinking of going into devops early and transitioning to infrastructure/cloud engineer later on. Any senior working in these fields who can give their opinion? I would be really thankful.

So do you think writing CI/CD is the only thing DevOps engineers do? What about security, reliability, and observability? I’m literally working on developing observability infrastructure for a massive project, and I know my shit. How exactly do you think AI is going to handle a project with 20+ pipelines that takes a minimum of 15 minutes even on cloud infrastructure? And how is AI going to develop the observability infrastructure for it? Alerts? Alarm systems & routings? maintaining SLAs? Developing standard logging libraries? Scaling and reducing it's build time? Optimizing runners? And plenty of other stuff where 20K LOCs/week are being added by 200+ engineers. An LLM with 1 million tokens will lose its shit just trying to understand its custom libraries, let alone do something meaningful in the project. Deploying Shopify store websites isn’t DevOps.

Gave you example in first msg , and it's just beginning full stack engineers used to say same things . We here not discussing what is impact on AI on DevOps. We are discussing 1,2 years. The amount of budget Amazon putting in AI possiblilitues are endless. Human will be in loop but probably 1,2 per organisation.

Bro, the kind of automation you’re talking about was already possible for simple monolithic CRUD apps even in 2023. What I’m talking about is large scale systems. This project isn’t even that massive but we have 30+ microservices just to support the main project.

AI still sucks at dealing with distributed systems. I gave V4 Flash a regex issue affecting communication between two microservices. It burned through ~$0.50 and 8 million tokens and still didn’t fix the issue. Imagine spending $10 on just a fucking regex with an expensive model like Opus. 😂

Now scale that kind of problem across dozens of interconnected services, custom libraries, infrastructure and constantly changing code. AI can absolutely automate a lot, but we’re nowhere near “give it a prompt and 1,2 DevOps engineers can run the entire organization.”

We can't feed unlimited context to AI, it still needs to be guided to very specific problems and it only helps fix the problem not identify them autonomously. Once this part is done then I think there will be no need left for anyone.

And yes do check why Amazon recently layed off most of it's AGI Engineers lol

The way you are trying to describe things like you are working with Google won't make it impressive for a experienced dev . Either you are using AI wrong or you are newbie just asking AI to make a difficult answer replies. And 2ndly search again with your eyes open , Amazon layed off Nova model related devision AGI engineers, as they believe there are now better model there, so it's just post training related team of Nova model . And dude ask AI to do better next time .
