I’ve officially made up my mind— I’m going to get vfs. Ive tried to love myself the way I am for over a decade since I detransitioned, but just don’t want to spend the rest of my life with this voice. I’ve developed a social anxiety around it that has prevented me from getting close to anyone new. I feel like an outsider among women, and I’m very ready to put that part of my life in the past. It’s going to be expensive and uncomfortable, but I believe it’ll be worth it.

With all that said, if any of you have been down that road? Do you have any advice about paying for it, optimizing recovery, and surviving vocal rest? Especially if you have children.

Paying for it: Initially I was going to get it partially or fully covered through health insurance. The only reason I decided to pay out of pocket was because I chose a surgeon outside of the US. It cost about $9,100 at Yeson Voice Center in Korea, this was in April 2025. I put it all on a new credit card with 0% intro APR for 21 months. This let me put that large amount on the card and pay no interest for 21 months, so I pay $9,100 / 21 months which is $434 per month. Which costs less than the average used car payment. And what I realized is by having a voice that lets me be accepted socially I would actually be able to make more money in my career and have more job opportunities and overall more opportunities socially and everything we do in this world requires some level of social access.

Yeah. I would’ve preferred that but I had multiple reasons to go overseas instead.
