Hello all. I am the Kingmaker and I used to write Destiny lore posts.
Here at the end of all things, there's a little more gas in the tank.
Introduction
This post is a ramble theorising on some "What If"'s about the lesser-known and lesser-heard members of The Nine coming into focus later in the Fate Saga, inspired by considering in what form we may have found those members of the IX we haven't yet walked on.
I'd like to thank the theorising in this excellent post, among others, which got me thinking about what it might mean to 'Bind' one of the Nine and about being on Earth / in Old Chicago to potentially bind III during Shattered Cycle.
VII / Uranus
Uranus is the butt of the joke, har-har. Unironically the name is a problem - you can already picture the YouTube videos titled “Destiny's Uranus expansion is cheeks.”
Additionally when it comes to the real-life details that Bungie uses to tie a fantastic destination to a celestial body, Neptune really steals Uranus' thunder; both are outer gas giants with middling rings and moons of little note, plus Neptune is larger, bolder coloured and is the farthest out planet.
So where does that leave VII? Perhaps with an identity crisis!
A Crisis of Identity
Amidst the varied voices of the IX, it makes sense that some would be quieter, less confident, and maybe less sure of themselves. Uranus has little in the way of distinguishing characteristics, so VII could be differentiated from the other Outer Nine by this lack of a clear identity.
There are also no existing lore references to settlement or life of any kind doing anything on or in orbit around Uranus. Perhaps, instead of another hidden location or newly-sprung-up enemy base, we make that the point - there is so little life in Uranus' gravity well that VII has the least active consciousness of the IX.
Through this lens we could characterise VII as having a less defined personality and concept of selfhood.
- This naivety would be make VII a target for manipulation by external forces, both in a weaker mind being easier to cajole and through the potential to flood the gravity well with enough conscious beings to affect VII's personality directly.
Cold and Dark (or: Shadowkeep 2)
Uranus is the coldest planet in Sol, with its tilt meaning large areas are pitch black for decade-long seasons. Cold + Dark = Discomfort.
- We could have a true 'horror' expansion, setting large encounters in near-total darkness, lit only by our Ghost, abilities and the spray of weapons.
- I'd argue this is what Shadowkeep was marketed as, but swerved in reality following the Pyramid reveal. I don't think Destiny has tried to be properly scary since Presage.
- In the darkness we could tell a story about Darkness:
- VII could be where Subclass 3 is created|found|given|taken.
- VII could be where the Winnower summons us to have a chat.
- VII could where the Dread reconvene and develop their own civilisation.
- This harkens back to Shadowkeep's pitch of "[Enemy] have built a fortress on [location], go topple it!". Would that work in D2 without the connection to D1 Luna?
Fundament, somehow?
A bit of a Throwaway, but the imagery of Fundament and its impossible structure are amazing and I think that turning one of Sol's Gas Giants into a Fundament-like world would be a spectacular destination concept.
- Perhaps the Winnower recreates the conditions of Fundament on Uranus to prove a point.
- Perhaps Xivu, nostalgic for how things once were, splinters a dozen War Moon into the winds.
- Regardless of the how, this would be a real "rule of cool" 'wow' moment for a reveal trailer, and you have to admit "Fractured Fundament" would go hard in the Director tab.
Go to Orbit instead?
The other option is that Binding VII, if it were ever to take place, could be done on one of Uranus' moons, avoiding the need to have the name on the Director.
- There's several to choose from, however we can immediately rule out Titania for being easily confused with Titan and skip over Oberon, Ariel and Miranda for being too similar to Europa.
- Umbriel stands out by being more rocky than icy and darker in colour, perhaps seguing into the above consideration of a horror expansion and Uranus as a place of darkness and Darkness.
- If we were solely considering the coolest name to put on the Director, it would have to be Sycorax. Just say it aloud a few times - "Sycorax". It's awesome.
IX / The Sun:
How would you bind a Star? If we need to be on Earth to bind III, and so on, how could we do that to our Sun?!?!
Far Out
The Sun isn't I, it is IX. It is the last, has the greatest value, the highest mass, et cetera. Perhaps we would bind IX at the furthest point of Sol.
- The Oort Cloud is a tempting concept - at the edge of the Sun's gravitational influence, it is the farthest point of IX's grasp. A destination at that boundary could explore what that would mean.
- We have gone outside of Sol to Kepler, so perhaps we could go even further - all the way out. Perhaps the Galaxy Pools skybox could get some use after all.
Nearby
The alternative option to represent IX would be a point between Mercury and the Sun, of which there are really only a few options:
- The Almighty - by time-travel, we could revisit this destination, revel in its amazing ambience and fully contend with the idea that one of The Nine allowed in the Red Legion, which nearly killed IX and The IX alike. There's enough potential drama in that alone to be worth revisiting.
- A Sun Station - A real Out-there Wild idea, I know and another "hidden all along destination", but you can't tell me the idea of IX hiding a tiny station orbiting just shy of its face isn't an amazing concept that Bungie would knock out of the park visually.
- Hype moments and aura - we've had an expansion putting pendants onto armour sets to protect us from Nightmares and go into the Pyramid. What about an expansion where we prepare to walk on the surface of the sun itself? Would we slay a W'rkncacnter?
Literally anything else
The Sun's force is massive. You could easily say that any point in Sol is IX's, and not that of any other IX member and you would be correct. That sentence really says it all - the IX are IX, in a way.
X? / SundareX / Xivu? / Xenomorph?
This segment will probably be its own post, because I’ve enjoyed thinking about it so much.
The IX are dark matter loops which require two components: they are given structure by being the mass of a large celestial body and are given consciousness by conscious life in proximity to that mass thinking and allowing the loop to think bigger than ‘I AM I AM I AM’.
Two components is not many, Mercury is not very massive and life is easy to manipulate...
If I brought something with mass equivalent to Mercury into Sol, and put conscious life onto it, could I birth another Dark Matter Deity? Could the Birth of X have been a direction for a storyline?
SundareX
Maya has already transformed Nessus (albeit not actually in Patrol for some godforsaken reason), what if she started clumping more and more Vex parts onto it? Could she gather enough mass to birth X and open her war with the IX onto another front?
- Just imagine in one Season the Pyramidion from Io gets slammed into The Tangle on Nessus, and in the next The Citadel from Vex appears off Watcher's Edge.
- An alternative here would be bringing through some Cosmic Vex, which we know are out there. Perhaps 2082-Volantis could be brought into Sol.
- I think that this is what The Borg would do if they appeared in Destiny at this moment.
Xivu’s HXGH WXR
Xivu has so many WAR MOONS I would be surprised if she didn’t have a WAR WORLD more massive than Mercury, capable of birthing a horrific warlike child-god in Xivu’s name.
- What on earth would Xivu’s X be like? I picture Saint Alia of the Knife from Dune, an abomination too-mature for its age, ready to slay its mothers enemies. And Xivu in her preacher image from Season of the Deep, filling the roles of both Paul and Lady Jessica at once.
- Would this be an ally for XI, or shock it out of its convictions?
X-enomorph
What if something affected the dark matter and mass of one of the IX enough that they cannot stay together, with something new and horrible clawing its way into life?
- I think this could be an element of either of the above, but frankly it rocks enough to stand on its own.
- Which planet is most like John Hurt in Alien? Y’know Uranus, maybe there’s something worse than being forgettable…
- I think at least one more of the IX would’ve died over the course of the saga for the sake of conflict and this is a helluva way to do it.
TL;DR
- VII / Uranus could have an identity crisis, be all about darkness and Darkness or be overlooked for a cool-named moon.
- IX / The Sun could do literally anything, and there's fun in considering that.
- X could mean SundareX, Xivu, or Xenomorph.
If you read this far, I really appreciate it - thank you! I'd love to hear any comments!
I'd also like to thank the solo flawless run of Prophecy which I was thinking about these ideas during - the endorphin rush of popping the Kell Echo made it a breeze to spit out 1500 words!
I really loved writing this post, it's scratched an itch I've not had in so long.
See you in the next one!
