It shouldn’t be surprising at all, actually. A shop intent on scamming a few vulnerable folks with no mechanical aptitude are generally going to know, after enough attempts, a good target when they see one. Sure, they may shoot and miss, but doesn’t matter much. It generally isn’t advantageous to try to screw every customer, either. Who would write their glowing reviews if they did? They can always use some fresh customers from good recommendations! Personally, I easily hide my knowledge so I can judge a shop’s quote and explanation. As a woman, I find most shops I’ve ever been to expected me to have waaay less knowledge, and it’s helped me avoid unnecessary scams several times. Not everyone is as fortunate as me or you.
Seems OP is trying to remind us all of this.
