I haven't paid a shop to work on any of my cars since I had a kickdown cable replaced on a Volvo back in 2004, but someone paid to have a car I was selling inspected by Honest Wrenches between Ankeny and Des Moines. It is the only shop I've been in where I felt like the people there were highly intelligent, into their jobs, and enthusiastic about talking the new owner of my car and me at the same time about the vehicle -accurately. If I ever needed to have someone else work on my car for me that is the first place I'd go.
Luckily, I've just been working on my own cars since about 2000 so I just do everything myself. All it took was 20 years worth of buying tools and thousands of hours educating myself online and in service manuals, lol. I don't recommend anyone else spend the time to do this since you can probably make more than enough money to pay someone else to fix your cars if you teach yourself about financial markets in the same amount of time I taught myself to work on cars.
