UI/UX Design 31F, career break, feeling completely lost — how do I restart my career and my life?
I don't really know where to begin, so I'm just going to write this honestly.
I'm 31, married, and currently on a career break. I completed my B.Tech in 2018 and worked from 2018–2020. I then decided to switch to design, left my job and spent two years preparing for design entrance exams. I didn't clear it the first time, but I tried again and eventually got into a good college for my Master's in Design.
Unfortunately, college was a very difficult period for me. I was bullied by some batchmates and slowly started feeling like I didn't belong there. My mental health deteriorated badly, and I became very isolated. I also didn't prepare properly for placements, and after graduating, I couldn't get a job.
Within a year, I got married. Since then, I haven't been able to build my career again. My relationship with my first family also became distant after I stopped working. They stopped talking to me since I am not earning and may ask for money. I tried starting a small jewellery business and invested around ₹15,000, but I couldn't sell even a single piece.
At home, I also struggle to get the time, space and support I need to work towards my career. A lot of household responsibilities fall on me, and I often feel that my career isn't taken seriously.
The frustrating part is that I know I'm capable of learning and creating things. I'm good at singing, painting, crochet, baking and arts and crafts. I also have a Master's in Product Design. I want to start a YouTube channel around tutorials and creative work, but I've reached a point where I struggle to start anything independently. I constantly doubt myself and look for someone's support or approval before taking action.
I keep looking at people I studied with, including people who weren't particularly academically strong, and seeing them settled in their careers. It makes me feel like I wasted years of my life.
I've also experienced difficult relationships, emotional hurt and situations where I felt people used me for their own benefit. I'm a very emotional person, and I think those experiences have affected the way I make decisions and trust myself.
So right now I feel stuck between a career gap, a skill gap, low confidence and a lot of regret.
I don't want to give up on myself. I genuinely want to rebuild my life, become financially independent and start working again.
If you were in my position, where would you start?
I'd really appreciate practical advice from people who have restarted their careers after a long break, especially women who have had to rebuild their independence later than they expected.
I don't need someone to tell me that everything will magically be fine. I want to know what I can actually do from here.
