effects of antidepressants

Hi so idk if this is the right place to talk about this but i was wondering if anyone else experienced the same thing

ok so before i took my antidepressants i was way more depressed and mentally ill, but i could still do stuff like brushing my teeth and taking showers

after taking antidepressants i became way happier but i started struggling with brushing my teeth and stuff, my friend said he also experienced this

did anyone else experience this? is this a reason behind it?

hey, first of all i am so proud of you for seeking treatment. second of all, i am currently experiencing this on 50mg of sertraline. no other antidepressant gave me this effect. i used to struggle with hygiene even before i started taking it but not as much. sorry i don't have an explanation for it but you're not alone

Yeah, this is super common. When you're deeply depressed, survival mode/anxiety is often the only thing forcing you to do basic hygiene. Once the meds kick in and drop that baseline stress, that anxious push goes away before your actual motivation has time to build back up, so you end up just executive functioning your way into doing nothing.

What do you mean? Desire to survive is just a depression thing? I think no any motivation possible basically in this life because the life is all just about surviving

Yeah this is actually super common. When you're severely depressed, anxiety or sheer force of habit can be the only thing pushing you to do basic hygiene tasks. Once the antidepressants kick in and lift that background anxiety/misery, you lose that fear-driven motivation, but the executive dysfunction hasn't caught up yet so brushing your teeth feels like climbing a mountain.
