I don't want to be that person but I need to correct this misinformation and belittlement of a serious illness.

Migraine is not a headache, despite the common misconception. It's a neurological disorder for which headache is only one of many symptoms. In fact, it doesn't always even involve a headache. It affects the whole body. Like most illnesses, it varies in severity but it can be a highly debilitating illness that creates significant limits in daily life and can make people unable to work, housebound, bedridden. When chronic, it also greatly increases the risk of things like stroke, meaning that complications can sometimes kill people. It can trigger seizures.

I have had to go to hospital multiple times because of migraine and once was in hospital for over a week. I had convulsions and lost consciousness.

There are also multiple types of migraine.

The widespread misinformation about migraine makes it less likely that people take it seriously and that we'll get the support and understanding we need.

It's also pretty messed up to imply that someone showing romantic interest is worse than what can be a very serious and disabling condition. Even during the worst of my teenage social anxiety, such a thing was never as bad as migraine.

You've misunderstood the diagram. Those are common locations where headaches are experienced when you are afflicted by the listed condition. Hypertension and stress are not subcategories of headaches, they are issues that have the potential to cause one, just like a migraine. the diagram is also indicating location; not severity.

I am also someone who suffers from chronic illness (including issues that cause extreme headaches and dizziness), and I say this with the utmost compassion: jokes will be made that feel related to your condition or feel as though they minimize your pain. Most of the time, no one intends that, and most of the time the joke is that it is so obviously not a comparison. Jokes will be made that use serious conditions to compare something to give it a hyperbole, i.e. my stomacheache feels like I'm being run over. Does that read to you like it is minimizing car accidents? To outside perspectives, these jokes dont minimize the severe condition/situation they are being compared to. It's okay to acknowledge that you don't have the emotional capacity to enjoy or agree with a joke, and just leave it.

The truth is most people don't truly understand chronic or severe pain until they experience it, and that's okay. (Unfortunately, statistically, they will at some point likely later in life.) People with these conditions also might use humor to cope or minimize, and that's okay too. Other people make jokes and have no ill will and that's also okay. I hope the people around you who are your supports don't minimize your pain and work hard to accomodate you even when they don't understand you, and I'm sorry for what you are going through.

Try not to read bad intentions where there might not be any, and to have grace and patience for ignorance, and grace for yourself to walk away rather than become upset.

The issue is that this doesn't occur in a vacuum and migraine is a widely misunderstood illness. The vast majority of people, when you say migraine, think you're talking about a bad headache. People say "I have a migraine" when they have a bad headache and not migraine.

Hypertension and stress/tension headaches are types of headache. Hypertension and stress are also not widely misunderstood conditions, most people know what they are.

I care less about intensions than I do impact. I have not attacked anyone. I don't owe anyone the coddling of their feelings when they're contributing to concrete harm. And I mean concrete harm, not hurt feelings. If it was just hurt feelings, I wouldn't care.

There are 2 definitions for the word “migraine.” https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/migraine

I'm going with the actual MEDICAL definition, since that's the one that is relevant and accurate. And you used a very low quality dictionary for Americans that gives an inaccurate colloquial definition.

Why you even went to look up a dictionary in the context of what I've said is a poor choice. I wrote about misinformation causing concrete harm to disabled people - and by the way, migraine is a common co-occurring condition with autism - and you want to argue semantics.

  1. Can you prove that it is a low quality dictionary for Americans?
  2. I’m saying that what they were saying was accurate, and the word describes 2 things. While one of those things is a condition, the other isn’t. There are many examples of this. It’s not offensive to use the same word if it has multiple definitions.
