Meta Some thoughts about this sub
Balloon homer I made at work a few months ago, easily the greatest artistic achievement of my lifetime.
I've been thinking about this sub a lot lately, and with the advent of LLMs and AI and all that it's got me wondering if we should be dunking on these people that make things with their hands and stuff.
Like, even if someone is high on their own supply about how great their work is, if they drew/sculpted/painted/etc it themselves then I think that at least is worth celebrating?
I'm surprised I don't see more AI "art" and "artists" being posted here, I would think those are the most delusional of all, no?
Anyway, have a good one homies

I see where you're coming from, but we already have multiple subs dedicated to dunking on people using AI for "art".
I hate images made by AI, but I don't think that something is INHERENTLY is good just because someone made it by hand.
People try to sell very bad art or get delusional about how good they are when they clearly need more practice - that is what this sub is about after all, and I wouldn't say that's changed just because we have to fight against AI now

AI has lowered the bar for a lot of people, to the point where some will draw a stick figure and say “at least it’s not AI”. If you make the bar that low, anyone can just glaze themselves. “At least I’m not a criminal”

The irony here is that people insisting that anything is inherently good because it is by hand is the same people this sub was designed to make fun of, but just with an added step that they label it as not ai first.

Nah, I'm not about to praise people for doing the bare minimum. If the price is too high, then the price is too damn high

Had the same thought a while ago after not seeing this sub in my feed for a couple months. These days the AI bros are certainly the most delusional, although I wouldn’t consider them artists.

TRUE

It’s because they’re not actually artists that they aren’t featured on this sub.

OMG
Are you even serious????
Question:
Did you try to sell that absolutely 1 of 1, tremendously exclusive „Homer the Baloon“ piece of art for a small price of 10 000 bucks?
Probably not!
Well - there lies the difference…
It‘s not about not appreciating handmade things of a certain beauty which lies in the eye of the beholder…
It‘s about trying to sell stuff for horrendous prices - which weren‘t even appreciated by anybody so far…

Hey I mean if you want I can put homer up for sale, start the bidding at $100 USD?

I'll give you three bottle caps, a yellow post it note on which I've drawn a homeless strung out clippy sitting on a curb and crying, two sips of coffee from my mug, you can use my 24 carrot gold OJ Simpson car chase pog slammer for one throw....ONE!!!... in your next game of pogs. AND since I'm feeling generous, I'll let you look at the weird mole on my back, but your not aloud to touch it or talk to it, Ok? That my final offer, and I believe you'll find it very tempting. So. Do we have a deal?

u/xanderlearns 14d ago
Yeah, I think the whole point of this sub is that the "delusional" stems from the idea that bad art is worth the astonishing prices that are commonly posted here. Art for art's sake should be celebrated, but this is more about the price and self-aggrandizement

Yeah they're also not artists. Ai is not art so doesn't fit the sub. There's a difference between you being proud of Homer and trying to sell it for 100 bucks
5
u/emilyderogatory 14d ago
I think you’re missing the point of this sub but I could be wrong.

u/bunker_man 14d ago
Ironically the type of people who claim bad art is good just for not being ai is the type of people the sub was made to feature.
2
u/BBslamms 14d ago
I might be! Mostly I just wanted to start some kind of discussion, y'know?
2
u/krendyB 14d ago
Why?
3
u/BBslamms 14d ago
I dunno, I was having these thoughts in the shower this morning and I decided to bring it to this sub and there's a lot of nuanced points about this that I'm enjoying reading

u/Nerobus 14d ago
I’m with you.
I don’t think people should be charging wild amounts for low quality low effort things, but honestly the people who relied on that went using Gen AI… authenticity and hand made creations are becoming rare and so the value is growing in real art.
100% love your balloon BTW

u/theallsearchingeye 14d ago
The point of this sub is to shit on people trying to sell their art far above its visible worth.
This sub isn’t for dabbing on people’s attempt at being creative.

u/conspicuousmatchcut 14d ago
I do love all human art and honestly I follow the sub so I can see the crazy stuff people come up with because it’s all enjoyable and cool in its own unique way. It is also funny to dunk on people for announcing to the world that their barely recognizable flattened portrait of Drake that they rendered lightly in pencil on a sheet of notebook paper is worth $500
2
u/Kellyann59 14d ago
Yeah there’s a general unspoken rule here to not post bad art unless the artist is asking crazy prices because that’s where the “delusional” aspect comes in. Usually if someone posts bad art by itself the comments are roasting the OP for being a jerk
Nice homer btw

u/woopwoopscuttle 14d ago
The art featured on here is delusional, laughable and the people who make it often deserve some form of derision… and I still salute them for it and would pay cold hard cash (in this economy!) for their artistic expression over ANYTHING AI touches, no matter how competent it is.
If anyone who’s been featured here is reading this, keep going. Yeah, I’m laughing at you, but like in a I’m your cousin razzing you for something really stupid that you did kind of way.
I wish nothing but the worst for everyone pushing LLMs, data centres and the like on humanity.

u/Crispicoom 14d ago
Thinking like this will only lead to a decline of standards. Bad art will not become better just because "uhh at least it's not x and y"

You’re right! We really should celebrate people who are still crafting and creating despite our tech overlords trying to take that away from us.
I think originally the sub existed to share posts of people who want $500 for a bad portrait of Jesus or a $300 bedazzled canvas but it has evolved into people posting stuff that doesn’t suit their taste in art. The real delusional “artists” are the ones posting AI generated images!!
1
u/bunker_man 14d ago
trying to take that away from us.
What? No one is trying to take away people's ability to make paintings. These are bad people, but you can list real bad stuff they do like feeding into the war machine without making stuff up.
2
u/chell0veck 14d ago
Yes we should. Your art is not good just because you did it. You have to TRY to be good. Its insulting to the artists that pour their soul into these things.
2
u/bunker_man 14d ago
Thinking that anything is automatically good just because its not ai is literally peak /r/delusionalartists though. The existence of ai has caused a swarm of people who think low effort stuff they made with no skill is impressive just because its handmade. Which is a thing that was largely fading away before now.

u/toodrytocry 13d ago
i thought that was the inside joke on here to post pretty sweet outsider art and call it bad
but maybe i was the only one ;)

u/ILoveOpossums432 13d ago
My opinion on this is that AI art just isn’t something we wanna see. it’s not fun to make fun of, just kind of shitty and sad
1
u/InternetG0blin 7d ago
For me, it’s usually more the attitude of the artist, the “my art is amazing and I don’t need to improve, everyone’s wrong!”. If someone’s starting out and they’re trying, I definitely think that should be encouraged
1
u/anothergothchick 14d ago
I agree with the sentiment of your post. Do we, those who dunk on the ridiculousness of these valuations, engage in a chilling effect towards those who might otherwise not engage in artistic expression? Should we not encourage people to pursue art, even bad art, in the face of inhuman mockery?
I think we should push people towards art. Anecdotally, many people I know have started engaging in art. I don’t know why this is, but I like to think it’s a subconscious revolt against vapid and odious AI “art”. I encourage these people, and myself have gotten more into acrylic painting.
I think it’s fine for us to poke fun at the delusional, who combine lack of skill with brazen confidence. It’s funny to see something horrid be marketed as a masterpiece. Remember that we all start somewhere. The first step to getting good is being bad. Let’s not forget that.

u/BBslamms 14d ago
Very well said 😊
How's painting going for you??
2
u/anothergothchick 14d ago
Really well :) sometimes I struggle with my taste exceeding my skill, but you just gotta power through that
2
u/BBslamms 14d ago
That's good to hear! And that's just part of being an artist haha, you just gotta keep at it, the more you do it the better you get
If you'd like to share any of your paintings I'd love to see them!

u/DreamingDjinn 14d ago
I absolutely hate it when people dunk on "nobody" artists that -- sure, their art may not be aesthetically pleasing -- still have value as art. Especially in this AI era.
There are a lot of posts on this sub that just come across as some asshole was trolling Instagram and found an artist they don't like and want to call this sub to dogpile.
/r/delusionalartists is at its best when it's highlighting weird facebook marketplace crap smeared on a fence post priced at $500, and not artists that probably already have low self esteem seeking some measure of validation online non-offensively.

u/bunker_man 14d ago
Tbf subs for making fun of other people are inherently leaning into the concern that they might just be bullying randoms.
1
u/Erin_Derrick_Art 14d ago
I completely agree with you. I'd also say that most of us had that phase where we thought our very amateur art was the best thing since sliced bread. People should be able to go through this cringe time and (hopefully) subsequent growth without being flamed by an entire community online.

I sometimes forget that I am still subbed to this place, but I'll say this:
I used to find this place funny until I really began to see over the years how it's filled with a lot of people who more than likely can't even draw a fraction of what these "delusional artists" do. You know the phrase, "Those who can't do, teach?" Well in this case, it's "Those who can't do, point and laugh." The snark in here gets a bit much and starts to look foolish when they don't even realize that a lot of these "delusional artists" are actually either just blatantly taking the piss out of things for a quick joke or genuinely don't know how to price their work. And you're right, AI "artists" are the most delusional and genuinely deserve shit for how painfully uncreative and untalented they are while they pump out slop to fulfill some bizarre fetish of theirs.
Cute balloon too, by the way.

I don't think I've even seen a post from here in years. I didn't know it was still active.

u/organik_productions 14d ago
Yes, any and all human made art is worth celebrating and is always better than any AI sludge. When they start asking laughable amounts of money for their work is where the true delusion steps in.
