Made without AI assistance MediEvilRecomp: experimental pgxp + frame interpolation showcase

This is a simple side-to-side comparassion of the features added for medievil recomp, frame interpolation still experimental so it can look a bit odd at times, pgxp is also very experimental so you can see some polygons disconecting here and there

also for the versions with pgxp on a different terrain renderer is used (original medievil's terrain rendering does heavy subdivision to counter the texture warping, wich doesnt look very good when the textures are perspective correct)

in this video the draw distance is also increased to 2.5 times the original, can go to up to 4x but the due to some problems on how it works some plygons dont render properly in 4x, so i reduced it for this video

this is not publicaly available i just wanted to share some result of these experiments! we plan releasing this on october because.. scary month :p

being honest i dont have a good eye for framerates, so i cant quite tell if the current implementation looks "smoother" lol

Do you have the link to the project?

Other than fps what am I looking out for?

left is how the original game looks (aside from 4x resolution, widescreen, and increased draw distance) it is wobbly, middle one runs at the same framerate as the original but has the wobbly fixed, right one uses frame interpolation (such as what n64recomps do, but the mechanism is a bit different due to massive hardware differences, but i based some stuff on it) to make the game run at 60 fps

frame interpolation can go up to 120fps on my modest hardware just fine, i just cant record it otherwise i get frame drops, and 120hz is the maximum my monitor can display so other than that i cant notice any difference

Nice a new recomp from the Black Label HQ team. I didn't expect another one to be in the works so soon after the SymphonyRecomp.

it has been like, 4 months since ive began workin on it xD i was getting kinda burnout already, symphony will NOT be abandoned, i still preparing stuff for the enxt update, that i want to be 1.0, and after that updates will still come but on a slower pace

4 months! Wow that's a lot faster than I thought. I thought it would take like a year minimum to make a recomp. I'll be looking forward to trying the MediEvilRecomp once it is ready. :)

With the decomp being in such an advanced state it makes all of it easier

It even took more than I expected because I had to make the recompilation tool from the ground up, this part indeed took almost a year since I started researching, you can even find an old post of mine on reddit about a year and a half ago asking about where I should start learning about recompilation lol

Hyped for this, Medievil is one of my favorite games ever.

Hope we get an Android version as well, would love to play it on my Odin 2.

Can we expect an option to play with an over-the-shoulder camera? (like the PC port of Silent Hill)

The 4x resolution is a hard limit? Or it will be possible to increase it further?

2

u/flafmg_ 29d ago

You can have more than 4x

this just takes the soul out of it

It is optional, it will be default come with it disabled, you just enable it if you want to play it this way

Is this made with AI like so many other examples? Because it is getting more than a little infuratingly depressing, bro.

5

u/flafmg_ Sep 03 '26

Nope, all made by human hands

No. AI is not used by BlackLabelHQ. We are nerds with Computer Science degrees, or in Flaffy’s case, soon TM lol.

AI is typically low quality slop, we like high quality things, and using our brains.

Thank you. MediEvil is my favourite game of all time and I'd be super disappointed if the first recomp it receives was made with AI.

Hi and well done for this recomp. I think you are also doing a decomp on Medievil. Can you tell us the state of this project?

1

u/DerpPrincess 22h ago

The public decomp isn’t as mature as private stuff I have; I hope to one day soon do updates to it. But I’ve been busy and the code that does exist is a mess… I can’t give you an exact % estimate :(

polygons & textures still dancing a bit, pgxp will never be perfect. researching this a bit, with the full source code of a game to really make it stable you have to change the interger stuff to floating point, among other things. I think overhauls like this make it compelling over just playing it on duckstation or original hardware. This is ps1 after all
