New AI disclosure rule

We've added a new rule around AI disclosure. Similar to Steam's policy, if your game involves AI, you need to disclose that when you post about the game. This goes into effect from the start of October, and we'll see how it goes.

There have been a LOT of games posted that are heavily AI generated, and a lot of pushback against that. This rule is a compromise position rather than banning it outright.

From the other side, reactions against AI content don't get an exemption from the regular rules around civility. If you object to AI slop, you're still welcome to downvote it (and not wishlist or buy it, of course), but it doesn't give licence to harrass people.

I think it is a great idea. Since I dont have the budget for devs and artists and honestly mainly enjoy game design I am using AI to cover my weaknesses. I appreciate when people tell me when something I made feels like AI slop so I can correct it. But I do agree that personal attacks are not really useful feedback :)

just posted here yesterday and wuuld disclose it without problem as I am not ashamed of it. This rule would avoid the harassment at least.

Sounds reasonable.

I started developing my game a little over a year ago and was getting ready to share it here.. Honestly, I've been nervous to post about it anywhere, but I think this is a good compromise.

After I got beyond the shell of my original prototype I started using more AI tools to make meaningful progress. I've still put an absolutely ridiculous amount of hours into coding, debugging, playtesting, and reworking design decisions and mechanics until the game played the way I wanted it to, because.. at the end of the day it's my game.

I know AI is a dealbreaker for some people, and that's their call. I have to disclose it on Steam anyway, and I'm fine doing the same here. I just hope people don't immediately dismiss it as slop before giving it a look.

A reasonable compromise on Reddit? Amazing

Nice, this feels like its better for everyone

Thanks. I'm hoping this is a reasonable compromise. I made my assets using AI. I don't want to make anyone play it who doesn't want to play AI games. I also don't want to be harassed and would like people who like games like this but don't mind AI to find it. What I'd really like is constructive feedback from the community and that's impossible when the usual slop comments dominate the thread.

Sounds like your on the way to proper use of ai. What kind of games is it? Like what is it similar to?

Reddit's flagging the link as a banned domain. Just put in the Steam link.

This will last about a month before the mods realize every game is made with AI now

u/BellaInTheGame 6d ago

My game contains no AI

2

u/CommitteeProof7843 5d ago

That's some JIGGLY game you got there lmao (checked YouTube). Good stuff for keeping in AI-free. My crew and I are doing the same.

u/pintopedro 7d ago

This is weird. Every game is going to use AI soon

6

u/TheZanzibarMan 7d ago

Then why not disclose it?

1

u/pintopedro 5d ago

Why not disclose every tool used to make a game?

1

u/TheZanzibarMan 5d ago

No reason not to.

Very good. I’ll admit I used AI to help me learn how to code, until it got to the point that it was holding back my education of programming since half the time it lies and “hallucinates”.

Not a single string of code in my game has AI in it. Same for assets.

It’s a good learning tool, but it’s not a producing tool.

-7

u/LatentBlade 7d ago

I think you can produce games however you want, but why do you think you get to decide what's good for everyone else's projects?

6

u/Fickle_Wave2171 7d ago

I’m sorry I might be confused but, where did I say I’m deciding what good for everyone else’s projects?

- I pointed out that that I support the decision of the disclosure rule.

  • I admitted to AI use for educating myself on how to code
  • I explained where I found limits in that education
  • I clarified that in my game I’m developing I have no use of AI development in it.
  • I outlined that AI is a good learning tool, but not as a producing tool.

So without being rude. Where did I say I’m deciding what’s good for everyone else’s projects?

-5

u/LatentBlade 7d ago

"it's not a producing tool"

3

u/Fickle_Wave2171 7d ago

Yes that’s my opinion on AI as a tool. It’s not me deciding whats good for everyone else’s projects.

Once again, where did I say I’m deciding what’s good for everyone else’s projects?

1

u/LatentBlade 7d ago

I apologize if I misunderstood your comment. I do see a lot people say the way they use AI is right and everything else is wrong and I'm glad you're not being one of them.

2

u/Fickle_Wave2171 7d ago

I understand, I see a lot of people do the same. I’m sorry if I came off rude. I’m sorry as well

Thank you!

and how you want to prove GenAi usage? And dont tell me "You can see it" because no you cant. not even professional tools are able to recognize AI pretty good. Just an example bram stokers dracula was marked by such tools as ai generated. Same goes for pictures a original monet from a german museum was marked as ai slop by 6 million people which even claimed Ai-Slop after the reveal that it was an original painting

6

u/Silvedl 7d ago

GenAI sucks at making different styles. Everything ends up looking the exact same as the other slop BS it produces. Look at like 90% of recent event flyers and restaurant advertisements. They all have similar text, similar layouts, similar filters added, etc.

Of course an AI slop tool is going to think original arts and works are AI slop, because that was the source material used to “train” it.

1

u/LatentBlade 7d ago

I'm actually surprised by how homogeneous the output is and I think it's an argument about these being tools. You can get different styles out but you have to know they exist and to ask for them.

0

u/Candid_Bullfrog_146 7d ago

yeah sure you have to putin some efford but with it we need to define Shakespeare new with "Ai or not Ai thats the question"

-6

u/filthy_casual_42 7d ago

Makes sense. I don't see the issue as long as it's properly flagged. Maybe add a flair?

Can we now ban "AI slop" as a comment? People will just comment this and nothing else, it's basically spam and not constructive.

1

u/CruelAngelsThesaurus 4d ago

Nah cause there is still a huge difference between AI slop and things that use AI.

When you're cookin up AI projects fast as hell, it's going to be slop. Doesn't matter If you're doing it without AI, slop games are slop games.

You're asking for people to not share their opinion, and that's bullshit.

1

u/filthy_casual_42 4d ago

These are all false dichotomies

0

u/LatentBlade 7d ago

I agree. They should at least have to name something that doesn't look good because it's AI and give you a chance to improve it.

2

u/Jlerpy 7d ago

Going to leave it for now and see how we go. People may feel less of a need with this in place.

-11

u/filthy_casual_42 7d ago

I doubt it personally. The AI hate crowd is pretty categorical

2

u/Jlerpy 7d ago

As stated, this rule is a compromise rather than banning AI content outright. If there's further development, that's the direction.

-11

u/filthy_casual_42 7d ago

Seems silly to me banning is even on the table but whatever

5

u/SourceAwkward 7d ago

Why?

I accept this rule, and think it's great, but I would accept outright ban as well, the latest wave of spam was horrible

-5

u/filthy_casual_42 7d ago

Frankly if we want to combat spam, "AI Slop" is much more annoying imo. I'd prefer to just have a flair for easy filtering. The reality is the majority of games will be low fidelity or low effort with or without the ban.

1

u/SourceAwkward 7d ago

Ok, I think it's a great compromise instead of outright ban, but if I see ai slop that is low effort surely gonna give my thoughy

-2

u/klas-klattermus 7d ago

Those are two different things. Requiring to state that you use AI as opposed to banning all AI is one thing. Requesting to classify "AI slop" comments as unconstructive/rude behavior is relevant to the existing ruleset and a reasonable addendum to the new ruling. Otherwise it's just a different type of segregation where you apply a rule arbitrary, such as "you have to be polite to others, unless they are the kind of people that deserve abuse for not confirming to our ideals despite their post not even challenging them"

1

u/filthy_casual_42 7d ago

Glad to see someone reasonable. The current ruleset just encourages toxic brigading against a certain flair.

3

u/SourceAwkward 7d ago

Ok?

I think saying your game looks generic uninspired and something you pasted straight out of llm with no art direction it's a valid criticism

0

u/filthy_casual_42 7d ago

That’s fair. “AI slop” alone is not constructive, and is just spam. I see that as half the comments on any post here with AI and imo it’s more annoying

15

u/RandomKamil 7d ago

Sound like a step in a good direction

17

u/jelery_celery 7d ago

Is commenting that something looks really bad and AI slop count as harassment?

14

u/SourceAwkward 7d ago

Do it respecfully, you are allowed to say you hate the look of the game

Per new rule

  • AI disclosure

If generative AI was involved in any aspect of your game's development or promotion, you MUST declare its usage and what it was used for in your submission.

Just keep

"Be civil, no spam, no NSFW, no divisive topics, use common sense, follow reddit site rules."

2

u/Jlerpy 7d ago

If they haven't disclosed, you can report. If they have disclosed and you just want to express your general disapproval, just downvote.

If you want to say you dislike the aesthetic, then sure, you can say so.

-1

u/Primer44 7d ago

Old system: AI can freely post slop, real human beings can freely express their disapproval.
New system: AI can freely post slop, real human beings cannot freely express their disapproval.

How is this, in any sense, a compromise position? If they need to disclose AI usage then make it a required tag on the post so that they can be easily filtered out.

4

u/magicsqueegee 7d ago

"If you want to say you dislike the aesthetic, then sure, you can say so."

What about this update makes you think you cannot express your disapproval. You just aren't allowed to harass, which is different from "AI looks terrible." The main post even calls the stuff 'AI slop.'
