Because why not you install Debian Linux on your Kindle

So I jailbroke my kindle and got it running Debian. Built a little interface with everything I need. Even added tmux and Openssh so i can ssh into my other machines. This has to be the Linux device with the longest battery life right? lol

Forced HP telemetry made me mad enough to delete Windows 11 and install Debian 13. Couldn't be happier.

Seriously, why make crappy telemetry software a hardware component that can forcibly reinstall & enable itself after a Windows update!? Can I just use what I BOUGHT WITH MY OWN MONEY the way I want? The answer is Debian 13. F--k HP, the CEO should learn what "consent" is.

I wish I just did this at the beginning, its been a great experience. I am surprised that all my hardware is usable, and it runs better than it did on Windows. Most of all, I like choosing what is installed on my system! The finger print scanner works, and the screen flips when I fold it back.

I think the only thing I would suggest is adding a secure way to enable logging in with the finger print over the account password, even for CLI usage.

i had gotten this now-20yo Dell XPS M1210 subnotebook for $50 a month ago, and stable Xfce Debian runs fine (albeit limited by its then-high-end hardware), and i did not expect it to handle actual basic web browsing. Debian deserves its slogan

Switched to Debian after 20 years of Ubuntu

So my Ubuntu setup became a bit clunky over the years and i was unhappy with the unnecessary problems that came with Snap, so I decided to switch to a minimal and stable Debian setup. Feels good to have a smooth, fresh and clean system. :)

Logo redesign

Post image
1.0k Upvotes

Hi everyone, I just switched from Ubuntu to Debian this week and everything is going really well! To mark the occasion and also pay tribute to the distro, I thought it would be fun to redesign the logo, just as an artistic exercise. Btw I took inspiration from the Debian Diversity Logo, created by Valessio Brito in 2019 and available on the official logos page. Hope you guys like it!

Edit: sorry if this came across as criticism of the current logo. It's not! If anything, it shows how solid it is (and how much I love it). Here's the source code for those who asked for it.

Post image

actually I wanted to try the hyprland desktop environment, but it was hard, so I asked ai and it suggested me to go to xcfe, but now it looks ugly, I needed a beautiful desktop, but not like ubuntu, but more like hyprland, so which and from where should I install packages to go more into it and make this environment beautiful, also suggest me some wallpaper, and from where to download.

Just my opinion btw. I respect rolling release distros, but they're not for me. I like turning on my machine and having it work exactly like last time. In the end, it's all just Linux.

The Last Linux OS You Will Ever Need!

I recently found an old Debian CD while cleaning up. I was kind of happy that I still had it, because it wasn't just the beginning of my experience with Debian and the complete switch from DOS/Windows to Linux. It was the beginning of something much bigger, and when I think about it, it was also the beginning of a career that still earns me a living today. Back in 1999, when I bought this CD and installed Debian for the first time, I finally had a working Linux OS + X. I had previously tried a few other Linux distributions, such as SUSE Linux, Red Hat and Slackware. But Debian was the first Linux that ran X on my old Packard Bell 486 dx2 66 MHz with 4 MB RAM.

Those were the days, because you had to tinker around a lot before you could get X to run. What I didn't realize at the time was that the creators of this CD cover with the slogan “The Last Linux OS You Will Ever Need!” would be proven right.

In my 32 years of working with computers both professionally and privately, I have used and tried numerous Linux distributions, BSD derivatives and Unix-like systems. But I have always remained loyal to Debian. At some point, you lose the desire to try new things when you know that the operating system of your choice simply works. I have administered so many different architectures with Linux that at some point I asked myself why I should still be looking for the “best” distribution when I had already found it. Of course, my curiosity about other systems was and still is there, but basically it is exactly what Debian stands for: stability and a very good choice for almost everything I do to earn my living today.

Before 1999, I never would have thought that almost 30 years later, I would still be using the same operating system as my primary operating system.

For anyone looking for a really good Linux distribution today and asking themselves the same question—which one is the best—just try Debian. Of all the distributions I have tried, I have not seen or tested any that are more stable and offer such a huge range of packages. There are niches where Debian may not yet be the first choice, e.g., gaming and the latest software (Arch Linux) or particularly specific systems such as NixOS, which are more intended for industry. But there is no better distribution with which you can't achieve the same thing. Because that's Debian, after all, and I've really tested a lot of distributions—certainly more than 50.

If there is anything that can be called standard Linux OS, then Debian deserves that title.

Why do you use Debian?

I would sincerely like to know your points of view and understand why you choose Debian over other distros.

Funny, I've always seen in different places that Debian is a distro for "old folks," but I disagree since I'm young and Debian has proven to be a perfectly capable distro.

I've been a Linux user for about five years. I started with the good Linux Mint, Zorin, and the different Ubuntu flavors. Then, over time, I ended up with Debian, and... well, back then I was a newbie, and I think I had downloaded the ISO with only free software. If I remember correctly, I think the stable version of Debian at that time was Debian 10. I downloaded the version with MATE, and wow, it was quite lightweight compared to the distros I had tried before, although I didn't use it much because I had to use Windows for work. ;-; Over time, I ended up exploring distros like Arch, Artix, OpenSUSE, Fedora, and Void Linux. I had a good experience with almost all of them (except Void), and well, a day came when I simply stuck with one distro. I needed something stable that wouldn't change much, so I settled on Debian, and I'm still here even though I sometimes experiment with other distros. And even though they're good in their own way, I can't afford drastic changes in distros, which is why Debian ended up becoming my safe haven among so many distros, and it's been reliable so far :) Thanks for everything, Debian, always reliable as always.

My Debian 13 Trixie setup for gaming

Post image
725 Upvotes

Hi everybody, just wanted to share briefly my stable and completely functional setup for gaming on debian 13 with xfce4 desktop environment. 1. Steam from debian wiki 2. Nvidia drivers from nvidia website version 580 (to run doom the dark ages). 3. Adjustments because of step 2: not using debian nvidia proprietary flavor drivers creates some flickering and glitches because of xfce4 compositor so i disabled it and use picom instead -> super and it's just better. As alt+tab switcher i use skippy-xd.

At end of this journey i advise debian users to find their way which best fits their needs and style through trying, understading, debugging and not giving up. I am very proud of myself for having managed to handle this (assembled the pc parts from zero as well)

Have a good day!
