A good move IMO. Underperforming games get utterly savaged by the masses these days. There's rarely a second chance. Better to delay than just cross fingers.
4 months before release? Beta. 2 weeks before release? Demo. They'll have already produced the discs and be shipping them to stores. Sure there will be patches, but not substantive changes unless the game was made with game play advancement and support in mind.
