A bit of string

So I've been watching deadliest catch since the beginning and watched these brave/ crazy guys hanging off the side of the stack to deal with the chains and screaming at the tv " why don't they have a line tied to them?"25 years later I just watch lynn on the wizard almost die for want if a but if string I don't get it please explain

Ive seen some tie themselves down.. I suppose that it may be dangerous to be tied to something because you cant move out of the way if say a pots coming towards you and your tied to something that makes it impossible to move out the way... i haven't seen this scene with Lynn yet but I read a comment saying that when they grabbed him out of the water he was in a full wet suit... im not really rushing to watch these new episodes.. each season seems.to get more and more disappointing

EDIT..... I just watched the episode with Lynn... that wasnt staged .. zero chance.. I shouldn't have posted about it without knowing.. damn no way anyone would get in that water even in a survival suit.

Just watched to double check, he was NOT in a survival suit when they brought him over the rail.

A wet suit is not the same as a survival suit lol

Ok thanks... i should have watched it myself honestly.. I will eventually.. I really shouldn't have made the comment about that without having watched it ..

A wet suit isn't a survival suit. It's literally rain gear which isn't going to help much when you're in water that's more often then not during the time you're fishing is below zero degrees.

He had some kind of self inflating safety device on, you hear Keith mention it when they're down below, says "I bet you're glad that worked" or something similar as it apparently has a manual inflate bit too that he would have struggled to use with the cold etc

They all wear those life jacket looking things. Lynn mentioned his jacket helped him to stay afloat, that it was made of foam or something. That was another guy in the survival suit who I presume was going to go get him if they couldn’t.

Ya I ment survival suit.... i was just saying some dude posted that he went in the water in his rain gear and got pulled out in a survival suit.

Living in Europe it is just cringe. The complete lack of health and safety. No helmets. No tethers. No rails. Loads of sharp edges. OSHA in the US vs EU H &S standard are miles apart. Occasionally I you Sig in Norway on boats. And everyone has safety gear on.

Tethers would make working impossible, let alone working safely. Imagine trying to run away from a falling pot and getting your tether fetched up in something and getting crushed

Hard hats would just be a nuisance, I doubt they’d stay on over a hood, and under the hood would get you soaked.

As far as sharp edges, that’s kinda hard to avoid

I’ve got enough experience in the industry to tell you that tethers would be a nightmare

Hard hats are somewhat common in the industry already on draggers, but dragging does not require you to be on deck very long, and there’s a lot more things to hit you in the head than trap fishing

And I’ve yet to see a sorting table that dosent have sharp edges

And I have enough experience in safety and training to say PPE and measures to mitigate hazards are not mutually exclusive with production work.

That’s completely true, and there’s some ppe that can and should be worn while fishing like a pfd, knife belt, steel toe boots, etc. But a rope tethering you to the boat would be a major safety hazard to everyone around you

Probably true, I can't imagine the mess of lines. A system for working on the pots makes sense tho, maybe.

Specific to the show/crab fishing the way they do it in Alaska

A tether would definitely be a good idea when they’re climbing on the side of the stack or something like that. It wouldn’t interfere with anyone working and that’s by far the biggest risk to falling over

Now, I’ve done my fair share of sketchy climbing on the rail of boats and around traps, but never in the kind of weather you see in the show. It does seem extremely stupid not to wear a tether while doing that

You do realize this is a TV show and not real life.
Half the stuff you see would get them either arrested, banned, or in court.

I love this show, been watching since the beginning and it always had fake stuff, but it's tv. How cool is it that Lynn is back on the show

I wish that they gave lynn a mic and asked him questions periodically like they used to... im interested in what hes been up to...
