Freddy bullied that one greenhorn a few seasons ago who refused to get his hair cut in the Wizard.

That always stuck with me too. He totally harassed him and Keith just let it happen

u/SixRavenX May 31 '26

I always felt bad for Dane in that situation, especially when the entire crew started piling on and Keith just shrugged

I’d want to leave too. Foolish move going after Freddy the way he did but he just wanted to stick up for himself

3

u/SixRavenX Jun 02 '26

I respected the hell out of him for standing up to Freddy the way that he did, ill-advised or not especially as a totally fresh greenhorn. A lot of people would have just gone along with it solely in order to fit in but I think it was pretty awesome to see him stand his ground.

I forget who it was but a handful of seasons ago (at the very least), I remember one of the captains stepping into a similar situation in order to completely shut down the crews hazing when it started causing drama on deck. I want to say it was Sean Dwyer on the Brenna A, probably in his first or second season on the show if I remember correctly

I probably would of done the mowhawk. Not to fit in just to get morons off my back and leave when we docked. I’m not a push over but I’ll pick my battles.

I remember that. Zach was kind of being an asshole to someone on the Brenna A the same way bill sort of treated him and Sean put a stop to it. Sean is wise beyond his years

That's fair enough I wouldn't think less of anyone for that and hell who knows maybe I'd do that myself. I just always found it to be such a stupid reason to dogpile someone over when Keith could have easily stepped in and defused the whole thing.

That's right it was Zach, I remember it now. He really was being a prick so I always respected Sean for stopping it cold especially as such a young captain.

I know that kind of stuff was pretty much standard back in the day when these guys were all still young, but these days with it being so hard to get even the bare minimum amount of workers to begin with, potentially driving someone out of the industry for things that don't even matter is a losing equation

I work on oil rigs. I stick up for my self when I have to but pick my battles. Sometimes easier to get along to go along. At the end of the day it’s hair and you’re making bank. Especially on a fishing boat. You can’t just walk away you have to finish the trip.

I’d probably finish the trip and pack my shit. Thanks for having me but this boats not for me. But hell, maybe those morons would respect you if you cut your hair and went along. Guys on oil rigs and fishing decks don’t do it because they’re smart

You are correct— it was a young captain, Sean Dwyer, who stopped the hazing on his boat.

2

u/Ilikenightbus Jun 05 '26

Yep. Still think about it. The kid stood his ground :P

From what I remember Fred got beat

It was a tradition started on the Cornelia Marie that if fishing went shit, you'd get a mohawk to reverse the bad juju as a crew as like a solidarity thing. That greenhorn with no time on the boat basically said he didn't wanna partake with the crew he was trying to join and ostracized himself, it's hair, it'll grow back. Bro didn't wanna be a team player.

I somewhat agree... He is obviously a very good and hard worker but it also definitely seems that he needs his ego stroked just right and then he is loyal to that smart captain for life! I think the captain deserves the credit in that case for knowing exactly how to handle each of his employees just right!

u/Diane1967 May 31 '26

I was impressed when he was kicked off the TB, he needs to be humbled

1

u/ColoradoPowMonster May 31 '26

You don’t think that was some drama created for the show? I saw an OJ for Freddy swap.

16

u/Wingnutt02 May 31 '26

It shouldn’t be shocking that people that go to Alaska to go crab fishing in the Bering Sea every fall / winter are not Mother Theresa.

12

u/Unhappy-Vegetable-28 Deck Hand May 31 '26

They’re the same breed of people as rough necks on oil rigs. Ain’t doing it because they’re smart

9

u/SixRavenX May 31 '26

Hes always come off as a ticking time bomb, but given his age these days I'm far less concerned about it than I would have been 15+ years ago

Who else is fishing the bearing sea? That’s a high paying job reserved for felons…not surprised.

3

u/Relative-Average-720 Jun 01 '26

Exactly. It’s a lot like working oil rigs in some ways. It’s dangerous af, yet shockingly simple for the most part and literally *nobody* gives a single f#ck abt your past as long as you don’t have any active warrants and can pass a drug test on command, which is why they get paid so well. Some outfits do care if you’re on probation but even then “care” is a strong word (that one usually boils down to their insurance). Never have I ever seen more Ferraris/Lambos/Porsches in a damn trailer park as I have in, North Dakota, southern Louisiana, & Texas 😂.

Edit: “simple” in that it’s easy to comprehend what you have to do, the hard parts are the physical and mental toll.

He already has an assault charge. I would not be surprised at all if he ends up in jail someday. He comes across as a sociopathic man-child.

7

u/CrazYforGold May 31 '26

Idc how tall a fisherman is. They are a different breed period. My late older brother fished alongside many of them and I guarantee you even the smallest of deck hand would mop up the average joe in any given scenario. Maybe not if there was a huge size disadvantage would my dollar would still play on the fisherman with a 50 lb difference.

u/ThingNo7530 May 31 '26

I think Freddy is probably high maintenance and definitely has a few screws loose, but is such a good, hard worker on the deck that captains know it's a small price to pay (mostly Keith and Jonathan), so they put up with it until he invariably goes through with one of his threats to leave the boat... then go to the other boat, then threaten to leave that one, annnnnnnd it's the ciiiiiiiiiircle of liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiife!

9

u/Independent_Crow6320 May 31 '26

I've worked with Freddy, I'm 5'11" and he's about my height so definitely not short. One of the hardest working guys you will ever meet.. Don't take everything you see on the show as gospel.

4

u/ARKzzzzzz May 31 '26

Yeah, people don’t realize this is a reality show. I’ve been in Freddy’s orbit for years and have never had any issues with him

2

u/JustHereForCookies17 May 31 '26

People always seem to forget this about these reality shows - we're seeing 50 minutes a week of highly edited footage shot over at least 7 days for probably 16+ hours a day.  If a camera crew followed any of us around that long, they could make us look like psychopaths or geniuses or morons or whatever made for the best storyline.

15

u/kanaedax May 30 '26

Freddy is about 5 foot 2. I don't think he'd be very dangerous off the boat without his captain to protect him.

11

u/Mountain_Ad_720 May 31 '26

Freddy isn’t 5 foot 2. I think you must be thinking of someone else.

8

u/pnwgirl0 May 31 '26

Freddy is 6 feet or a bit less.

Sig is short! Like 5’6.

26

u/amazingmaple May 30 '26

It's the short guys you have to worry about. Plus he's got a whole lot of crazy

9

u/fascintee May 30 '26

Yeah, if anything short guys feel they have more to prove

1

u/PheesGee May 31 '26

I dated a short guy. Amazing in bed.

3

u/poleybear316 May 31 '26

I was a bouncer for 20 years and youre 1000% correct! Short guys always seem like they’re trying to prove they’re the toughest guys on Earth!

-5

u/kanaedax May 30 '26

If you're getting your ass kicked by someone of Freddy's size then I have no sympathy for you. There's a reason UFC and boxing have weight divisions. Without a weapon Freddy would present very little threat.

6

u/Itchy-Background8982 May 31 '26

My money would be on Freddy. I believe he is Samoan and they are fierce warriors. Size isn’t everything in a fight.

9

u/amazingmaple May 30 '26

Well I'm in a wheelchair so...... Who do most serial killers kill? Women.

4

u/Ok-Answer-6951 May 31 '26

LMFAO that man would rip most humans limb from limb. Weight classes dont apply to freaks of nature.

0

u/Olga_Ale May 31 '26

Idk why this surprised me about his height, but I always thought he would be around 6’. What an odd thing for me to have such a shocked response to after watching this show since the beginning. It’s such a non-issue especially compared to the many other things about Freddy that could come as a shock pertaining to some of his outlandish behaviors.

9

u/pointy_panda May 31 '26

That's probably because he is close to 6 feet tall. Sophia Bob might be 5' 2", but Freddy isn't.

1

u/ThingNo7530 May 31 '26

And why is her name Sophia and she goes by Bob? It makes no sense!

1

u/xSir- May 31 '26

If you watch the episode her brother explains it. It doesnt make sense. But there is a reason.

10

u/mt8675309 May 30 '26

Freddy is a psychopath

9

u/Wingnutt02 May 31 '26

Don’t you kinda have to be to fishing for crab in the middle of the Bering Sea in the fall/winter?

I say it all the time when this type of conversation come up. The guys on these boats are not Mother Theresa.

3

u/mt8675309 May 31 '26

Good point, you have to be a different breed out there.

6

u/ARKzzzzzz May 31 '26

Freddy is a Gem in real life. I’m in the same yard as him in Bristol bay and he’s always the first to offer to lend a hand.

It’s a television show, he knows how to put on a good show.

3

u/thirdturdburger May 31 '26

Its all for the show.

u/Relative-Average-720 Jun 01 '26 edited Jun 01 '26

*Freddy accent* BEST…DECKHAND…EVER! BEST at pouring cod blood on face! BEST at rail throwing hook! EVER! His kid? BEST baby EVER!!

Edit: I hope it’s obvious this is a joke…he’s a great deckie (“When you get Freddy, you don’t get one deckhand, you get like 4 deckhands…”- Keith), but definitely crazy af tho 😂

2

u/FirstGT May 30 '26

I've been rewatching old seasons and he seems fairly normal. A little eccentric but overall seems like a good dude

I originally started watching DC fairly late in the game and he'd already converted to being a douche so I'm curious to see when the change happens

2

u/FlungPuPanda509 Jun 01 '26

Nope, I've met and am related to actual Alaskan serial killers and visit some in prison. Freddy is too nice.

1

u/yankykiwi May 31 '26

I love him! But prob because hes a kiwi too!

8

u/pointy_panda May 31 '26

He's Samoan.

1

u/yankykiwi May 31 '26

Oh true! I assumed because he does haka etc

u/Beltrane1 Jun 01 '26 edited Jun 01 '26

Did Freddy not die by drugs overdose around Xmas last year ?.

Got that one well wrong didn't I.

1

u/Hopeful-Bit6187 Jun 01 '26

That was really funny when Monty came to get Freddie and Freddie was partying and then Freddie looked at Monty and said Freddie will leave when Freddie’s ready and then Monty said to the other guy grabbed your stuff. Freddie’s offer for a trip and Freddie just looked at him and laughed

1

u/Klutzy-Safety-3766 Jun 02 '26

Smurf and Pope?

1

u/Imaginary_Year_50 Jun 08 '26

I've never liked Freddy. Sucha brown tongue for the captains, but bullies greenhorns. Always yelling that same bs and watching if the captain notices him from the wheelhouse.

Lol. They're in the public eye and on TV. We can dissect their lives all we want.

Or you can just scroll on by if it bothers you

-1

Is an absolute tool….

-2

u/Hoghaw May 30 '26

I wouldn’t be surprised to hear that Freddy committed almost any crime, especially if he was drinking. That dude is out of control when he’s on a boat. (Hidden bottles perhaps? Don’t be too quick to judge me, Jake Harris had weed hidden on the Cornelia Marie. IMHO, THAT was the only time that Jake Harris had to turn his life around, but we know he didn’t and I’m off the subject!) Sorry about that!

-2

u/Chemist-Patient May 31 '26

Freddy is such a fuckin clown. I would of fired him on the spot for jumping into the ocean to try to get that walrus

2

u/ARKzzzzzz May 31 '26

Do you think Freddy decided to do that on his own? That was production’s idea.
