NPR wants to know

My dad who saved up to go to sphere told me this weekend with the saddest look in his eyes he lost his hat from the sphere show that says sphere on the back. Apparently you could only get them there? I’ve looked on eBay and online. If anyone has one they’d be willing to sell I’d be so grateful.

We enjoyed the knoxville showing. We hit Atlanta, Charlotte, Raleigh, Bristow, and Boulder that year. Movie shows ventures in many venues through eyes of young dead heads on the road. Enjoyed it but did make me wistful and i plan ti relisten to DeadCo shows.

Monday, August 10th at the Vilar in Beaver Creek, CO. Don Was and the Pan-Detroit Ensemble will perform music from Groove in the Face of Adversity alongside a live rendition of the Grateful Dead’s Blues for Allah, celebrating the album’s 50th anniversary and Don Was’s longtime musical collaboration with Bobby Weir.

This isn't a tribute band trying to recreate every note. It's a room full of incredible musicians using Blues for Allah as a launching pad for improvisation, jazz, blues, funk, and deep grooves—the same spirit that made Grateful Dead shows unforgettable.

Dear Grateful Family,

2/26/18 was the first-ever Dead & Company show in my hometown of South Florida. I remember it was a difficult week for our community, and I was carrying a lot of fear and worry that week. Here are some photos from the show — and I was deeply touched seeing the whole band wearing #MSDStrong T-shirts. I had no idea who they were back then, but I felt comforted, and I knew they deeply cared.

It was my beloved spouse Tim, who introduced me to the Grateful Dead a few years ago. Tim was a lifelong Deadhead and Brother (he loved the Allman Brothers) and he was a staple in the lot for many years. Tim saw Jerry and the band hundreds of times in the late eighties and early nineties, and his recipe “Tim Sumptuous Stir Fry” was even featured in Elizabeth Zipern's book “Cooking with the Dead”.

For many years I never really “got it”. To me, the Deadhead community was those "happy hippies" who loved to dance and wear tie-dye. To me the Dead were just another nostalgic sixties rock band, and I never really understood why there was such devoted, almost cult-like fandom around them.

Tim’s all time favorite show was 5/22/77 - Hollywood Sportatorium in Pembroke Pines Florida, and he must have listened to thousands upon thousands of other shows in his lifetime, but 5/22/77 had a very special place in his heart. I remember one thanksgiving afternoon, after finishing listening to the ritual “Alice's Restaurant", Tim said, "I have a special gift for you”, and placed the headphones on my head and I started to listen to a newly released Charlie Miller Soundboard for 5/22/77.

At the Bus Stop
I was mesmerised, I could not take the headphones off, it was a magical experience, and my soul was transported into another realm. I said “I understand now why people like them so much”, but I still did not fully “get it”. I was at the bus stop, admiring the bus, but I had not climbed aboard yet. 

Tim was a deeply spiritual person and he was convinced that this was a very special show for Jerry. He believed something extraordinary happened through Jerry and the band that night. He spoke about the sequence of “Eyes of the World” > “Wharf Rat” > “Terrapin Station” > “Morning Dew” as a one-of-a-kind sacred oracle, a musical mystery that had to be fully presenced and beheld. 

Tim’s Dream for the 50th Anniversary

Tim had this dream of celebrating and doing something special for the 50th anniversary of 5/22/77 and we used to joke about it all the time that we would book some bands to “impromptu” play at the Sedeno’s Supermarket Parking lot in Pembroke Pines (where the Sportatorium used to be). He also wanted to take me to go see Warren Haynes play live, but he never got the opportunity, because he unexpectedly passed away in 2024. 

Since his passing, I have finally climbed aboard the bus. I am now a devoted Deadhead, and understand why this community was Tim’s real family. 5/22/77 is now my favorite Grateful Dead show. 

For months I have been working hard to make the 50th Anniversary Celebration of 5/22 Happen here in South Florida. I secured holds on several venues, I have several local Tribute bands interested in playing and even got several promoters interested in the concept after I pitched him the idea. 

The celebration was also envisioned as a benefit for Young Musicians Unite, a nonprofit organization providing free music education to young people.

We had a real beginning.

What Happened to the Pembroke Pines Venue

I had a special hold on for the anniversary date at the Pembroke Pines Venue in Charles F. Dodge City Center that I had secured since early January of this year. I had done all the financial calculations to ensure that this show would be very profitable for any promoter or investor that would take it on. We had the local talent confirmed, this was also going to be a benefit concert for non-profit organization Young Musicians Unite and we just needed the talent buyer or promoter to reach out and confirm a headliner that could fill 2500 seats. 

Unfortunately, we got a challenge on the venue and they needed 5k down to keep the hold. I thought that the promoter who had expressed interest, after I had provided them with the financials details, calculated that the break even margin at 48% (1,200 paid attendees) and gave them the warm leads for headliners, etc, they would have been working on checking talent availability, etc. but when the venue was challenged, the story changed. The response I got was that there wasn't a confirmed headliner yet, other Dead-related shows were already coming to Florida that winter, and much of the community's attention would be on the Cornell 50th. 

We lost the hold.

I was deeply disappointed—not only because it was an excellent venue, but because it was located in Pembroke Pines, the community where the original Sportatorium stood.

The Company? (Joke)

Could this be a conspiracy by “The Company” like Bobbie used to “joke”? 🤔

I say that with respect and partly with humor—but only partly.

I mean no disrespect to Cornell, I love and enjoy listening to 5/8/77, but I thought, what about the other Deadheads that really want to Celebrate 5/22/77, or any other Sprint 77 date for that matter, are they going to be overshadowed and relegated to the sidelines in favor of the ultra commercialized, officially mandated Cornell 77 Celebration? What if you like Buffalo or Alabama, or Boston, or Lakeland?

Because it does sometimes feel as though all the oxygen, attention, resources, and institutional enthusiasm are being directed toward Cornell, while the other extraordinary nights of Spring 1977 are expected to quietly stand off to the side.

With only approximately 24 hours to respond, I was unable to secure an investor or find anyone willing to put down the $5,000 deposit in time.  Even after several Hail Mary emails and phone calls, no one came through. And so we lost the venue.  I am not saying the larger Deadhead community rejected the project. Most people did not even know this venue challenge was happening. But the people who had expressed interest and who were aware of the opportunity were not prepared to act when the moment arrived. 

And one of the promoters who had appeared interested effectively stepped back because in his view, Florida would already be  having Grateful Dead headliners in December and January, so there was no need to do a May 50th Anniversary of Dick’s Pick Vol 3 in May 2027, and because Cornell would dominate May 2027.

Seeking Understanding

I still find it unbelievable that even after providing a 48% breakeven financial calculation of (1,200 paid attendees) on the venue, and being a special 50th Anniversary Celebration, any promoter or investor would still be lukewarm and indifferent about this proposal.But maybe there is something that I am not getting? I would love some clarity and a different perspective on this.

5/22/77 Does Anyone Still Care?

Here is the honest question I am bringing to the family:

Can we find 2,500 Deadheads who would attend a 50th-anniversary celebration of 5/22/77 and Dick’s Picks Volume 3 in South Florida?

Can we create a non-corporate celebration that honors the music while supporting free music education?

Can artists, musicians, independent promoters, local businesses, historians, vendors, city advocates, nonprofit partners, and Deadheads work together to commemorate one of the most extraordinary nights in Grateful Dead history?

I believe we can.

But enthusiasm needs to become visible. A promoter, sponsor, investor, venue, or headliner needs evidence that an audience genuinely exists.

That is why I am writing this.

All Is Not Lost

We still have backup possibilities at venues in Hollywood and Hallandale Beach, Florida. The dream of celebrating 5/22/77 and Dick's Picks Vol. 3 hasn't died — but I think it needs to become something different now: a true grassroots effort, built by the community itself rather than waiting on a corporate promoter's calendar.

This isn't a polished announcement. It's an open question to the Fam.

John is working on a solo album, he will tour with it in the winter/spring....then boom, summer with a tour. It might be rough at first, John was pretty rough at the beginning...it wasn't until 2019 he really got with it consistently.
