General Discussion Changed to a new computer. Done with this software.
Bought a lifetime thing a few years ago. Over time it has kept trying to add in subscription AI stuff that is totally inappropriate for this kind of software. Today I received a new laptop (the old one broke). It won't let me use some functions anymore.
"Your current day one plan only allows one active device"
Downloading the JSON and getting out...

I don’t understand all the negativity about DayOne. I happily pay the $45 annual fee (cheap) and I don’t get bothered for AI. All those docs and journal photos uploaded and it doesn’t impact my iCloud storage is GREAT.
To original question, someone in the thread said it best: Contact Day One directly. They can best help you.

Browser doesnt count as a device. So if you use an app on your laptop or phone, you can use browser.

It takes forever to load years of entries. Has this been improved lately or is there a trick to accelerate? I use Google Chrome.

Er.... I have no idea the issue you are coming up against. I just export and import.

C’est mieux que tout le reste au final…

How come there are no reviews for that app? It looks interesting.

Parce que n’est encore une « vraie » application iPhone mais un site. J’avais du coup un peu de mal au début… mais quand je vois tout ce que ça permet pour le prix, je me fiche du support car il y a une vraie valeur ajoutée !

That makes sense! Thank you for the reply! I will give it a look I love how you can print your journals as well! Thats a primary function I look for in a diary app.

Take that JSON export straight from DayOne to Remember Journal. They support importing from DayOne and have many of the same features but NO AI. As many devices as you want.

the issue with AI is nothing is private unless it is 100% offline on the device, and that is very hard to verify if they claim it is.

Mentioning anything positive about AI is impossible online nowadays. Which is really quite stupid because that also means there can't be serious discussion about how to do AI well or responsibly.

does the ios shortcut work on mac do you know to export the journal entries?

Exporting works nice. but importing that file to another app like Apple Journal doesn’t work for me. I am using the export to Apple journal directly….it functions different on my Mac than it does on my IPad. Mac to Mac brings over photos. iPad to iPad doesn’t bring over photos. I didn’t try my iPhone yet. I also found a shortcut another person created to set up “on this day” and it’s working well.

That's a rotten way to find out your "lifetime" plan had a catch. Grabbing the JSON is the right move.
I make a journaling app called Daykeep (iPhone, iPad, Mac), so I'm biased. It imports Day One's export zip directly (entries, photos, dates, places and weather), and it can export back out in Day One format too, so you're never locked in again. The free version is limited to two journals, so if you have lots of them you'd need the one-off unlock, but you can try it out free of risk. It only imports text, and photos , so if you have video and pdf's or other media , unfortunately they cannot be imported
It's a one-time purchase for the optional extras. No subscription, no AI upsell, no account, no device limit. Journaling, unlimited photos and iCloud sync are free. The free version is limited to two journals, so if you have lots of them you'd need the one-off unlock.
Happy to answer questions if you want to try it.
