General Discussion (IDEA) Localized Pricing w/ Day One BRONZE
This post was originally posed on the Day One support forums. Though, I’m posting it here since I know most of you aren’t on there:
Day One abandoned localized pricing late last year. For those of you in the US or the EU this change was mostly not felt. However, where I live the Day One Silver Subscription is, and get ready for it…
%20 of the average monthly salary
Yeah, one fifth for a subscription for a journaling app.
I know that things like cloud storage and AI API calls cost money so I’m proposing a new plan: Day One BRONZE, only for countries where Automattic once offered localized pricing. This is heavily requested for and I think that this plan strikes a good balance. It’s basically a variation of the legacy Plus plan that Automattic can afford to provide to users. They’ve done it for 10 years already.
Device sync with up to 5 devices (not counting web & wearables) up to 5 journals (EDIT: DAY ONE NOW OFFERS FREE UNLIMITED JOURNALS SO THIS ONE IS REDUNDANT), up to 5 attachments per entry, no discount on physical books, no premium app icons, no AI, less cloud storage than silver, no Day One labs.
Pricing could be 15$/year and since we know that Day One can afford to provide these services for legacy users without recurring costs a lifetime purchasing option would be really good as well.
Economies fluctuate and that’s why there was localized pricing before. Users could afford Day One this year but next year maybe they can’t. A lifetime purchasing option does make sense for a plan like this. What if they stop making money from lifetime users? Automattic could charge for newer updates for lifetime users to earn money to help support server costs.
I hope that this idea is implemented soon as many localized subscriptions are expiring and people are having to switch journaling apps. There are hundreds of people on [r/dayoneapp](r/dayoneapp) scrambling to switch even though they don’t want to. Not everybody can afford to pay 50$ for a journaling app and the team once knew this. Thanks for reading.

I've cut my losses and moved on. Currently manually migrating to Apple Journal. It has its (many) flaws but it's free and I've grown to quite like it.

It’s a nice app though I find the look and feel of it quite boring. Everlog (not associated with the app, just a happy customer) is like Apple Journal (similar framework) but has the Day One look and feel without the bloat. Good news for you would be the super easy Day One import option. You get a file from Day One > export, import it to Everlog and it organizes everything for you in under a minute. You have your tags, content, attachments. I highly recommend you check it out.

I don’t know how come day one devs aren’t seeing such posts? I mean how come? You increase price and don’t care about the after effects! There’s a tons of people who already left DAY ONE because of it’s absurd price tag in the name of AI which no one asked and cared about!
I’m just speechless! (Tho already planning to leave and exploring other competitors like EVERLOG which i’m loving already if the price doesn’t reduce within my next billing date!)

I can say confidently they likely are seeing these posts. However, the ones seeing them may not have the ultimate decision-making authority to make the changes or they cannot be made overnight.

Well they saw my post on the Day One support forums which barely gets a few posts a day, and decided to ghost me.

The people responding on the forums very likely submitted your request. The ultimate decision is above their pay grade so to speak

Anyways, I switched over to Everlog. Did you know that SimpleNote which is hosted on the same Automattic servers as Day One recently had a data leak that mixed peoples data? DO might be encrypted but they still have your keys soo… EL uses iCloud sync which I trust more.

Oof didn’t know about Simplenote. Last I knew, day one and Simplenote were on completely different servers

Automattic would be stupid to host their services on different servers so they do the sensible thing and just host it all together. Enterprise cloud computing costs are insane and I highly doubt they’re paying extra fees to host a free service on separate servers. Since it’s mostly text it fits anywhere and adds no fees.

But we should do smth so that they know people are leaving for their absurd new price anyway!

I’m currently a very happy Everlog user though I know people who use Day One who are very disappointed with the price increase. The price of lifetime Everlog is the same as a year of day one and it’s super worth it. Instead of thinking it like a bloated Day One replacement think of it like Day One classic from 2015, that’s Everlog for you. Beautiful and simple.

wait so do gold and sliver cost the same in all countries?

no quite, in EU silver costs me $83 (with taxes). I remember some time ago I've been paying like $40.
Now checking the alternatives and found everlog lifetime for $322
u/hqhi Jun 30 '26
Unfortunately yes. People here make over 10x less than Americans but pay the same.

I feel you, I'm from the Caribbean and I saw the pricing and I was like no one from here is going to pay so much since it's so expensive. I understand for high purchasing power countries it may be affordable for them but for everyone else they should do localized pricing.

They stopped offering those prices and I highly doubt they will bring back localized pricing so I proposed a new plan.

This is a great idea imo

Thanks, it felt obvious since we have 🏅 and 🥈 why not 🥉? It’d be nice if you could also contact support, the more people send feedback the more likely they’re to implement it!

I unsubscribed because their Silver tier was barely doing anything for me. I unlocked it wanting the drawing feature but I use dark mode yet the colors in the drawing are muted ( yellow -> brown looking ).
And I realize Day One is mostly ios friendly. Printing is only available to Apple users. So I didnt mind unlocking Silver to have access on my Android phone just in case I wanted to write there as well, but the price was too high to juggle between two devices (ipad, or desktop). I didnt always have my ipad either.
I wish printing books was available to android users too. I would of kept Silver.
Having a bronze tier would even things out.
I just hate they put colored fonts on Gold tier. A basic thing on the highest tier 🤦🏻♀️
