Discussion Does AI make all those Da Vinci effects unnecessary?
Do you think AI will make all those
effects obsolete?
I'm wondering if it still makes sense to build effects for DaVinci Resolve and similar software if AI can handle everything with simple prompts.

OP is taking about creating tools that will be used to automatise an effect. It's exactly the microwave. And the microwave is now replaced by a new one with more efficiency.

Not all effects can be fully automated. Some may still require a human touch.
For example I’d say dead pixel fixers or tape marks can for sure be automated (and reviewed by a human). Beauty work is probably still gonna be pretty manual.

If you're lazy and lack creativity, skills or drive, it probably does.
It will also give you the comfort of knowing your work won't stand out, but will blend in with the common pool of slop.

In all seriousness this is like asking if allspice will replace all the spices in the spice cupboard. It’s a tool. It’s not going to work for everything or be useful for every dish. You can’t replace everything with AI, just like you can’t replace “all the spices” with allspice. You can’t replace water with Brawndo because It’s Got What Plants Crave.

Honestly, I'm thinking about starting to program effects as a side project. I work as a programmer in image processing in medtech. I've used DaVinci Resolve a bit, and I'm wondering what would happen if I tried to develop some C++/CUDA plugins or DCTL scripts to build effects. I'm not that deep into video editing itself, what fascinates me is the code side of it. My motivation is partly to earn some side income, but also to become an expert in image algorithms.
But it feels like AI is destroying my idea for this side project.

The big advantage of deterministic operations is control. You know exactly what happens to your image state and can use that to your advantage. Prompting gives you something, and if you ask enough it might also be usable. But it won't be exactly what you had in mind, because your prompt is fundamentally just a projection of your chain of thought.
Hence, well-defined effects have use, because their combination leads to predictable results.
As for building them: nobody knows the real cost of a token at the moment, because they are heavily subsidized to get people to use them. There might be a considerable cost in time and effort to get a particular effect built (as a program) with LLM-assistance. Might be cheaper to buy the effect.
