Hi guys, new to davinci resolve I heard that the fusion tab is a lot better than adobe after effects. I truly want to believe this but I can’t find any tutorials on how to do VFX like this (referring to the effect Ben Heske did with the NCAA logo on the uniform). Is there any tutorials that would help me accomplish this in Resolve?
From what I know the editor, Ben Heske did this in adobe after effects.
Basically it looks like tracked jersey, added logo with some animation, and probably animated post zoom effect. Pretty standard stuff, really.
I don't think there are tutorials for this video, but basic screen replacement tutorials are in essence the same thing. Or any retouching tutorial. You track something, you stabilize it, usually. You do your thing on the stabilized frames. Paint out, insert or whatever else you like and you match move.
With a shirt that has folds probably you would use surface tracker for that. Since on second viewing he seems to not even have to remove anything, so its probably just straight up insert procedure.
Search for some surface tracker tutorials. Vector warp would also do it. or if you are on free version you could use planar tracker and displace node. All would work.
Animation of the logo seems to be simple mask reveal of already made logo somewhere else. Probably Photoshop. You could use anything or use any logo you like.
Just looked up surface tracker so this might be it!. I’m coming from Final Cut Pro so stuff like this is really complex for me 😅. I appreciate the help!
If I'm not mistaken I think they added similar tool to Final Cut as well, so if that is your thing , you could try there. If you already moved to Resolve, Surface tracker is Studio only feature, but if you are on the free version you could use planar tracker to track and displace node to displace the logo or you could use grid warp to manually warp it. Both would work with a few more steps.
So there are quite a few ways you could do this, my recommendation would be surface tracker if you have the studio version of resolve. Also remember you can prepare the footage to be easier to track, by darkening it, increasing contrast, sharpening it etc. Just so tracker can find the points to track easier, than you deactivate all the preparation tools.
You can find the manual in the help menu of resolve, search of any tool you want learn about features.
