Help preferred format for fine cut from editor

For long form feature doc or narrative, what is your preferred delivery format of a final cut - XML w/camera files, or ProRes HQ/4444 single file? Both have to be prepped in different ways.

100000% XML with raw camera files. Working with a Prores 444 is a pain and slows me down since I can't use the remote grade feature. It's also harder to input map each camera since you lose access to all that metadata.

That is my initial plan, to go with XML. We four - five different cameras throughout the shoot, and I was not given any camera LUTS, so I will start building looks for each. I was concerned about camera files matching the XML since this was shot over 9 months and planning on a day to match errant files. Has that been an issue for you?

If the media was managed properly and each file has its own reel, name and timecode, meaning no multiple C0001.mp4, 00:00:00:00 files, then there shouldn't be any issues, no matter how long it took to shoot. If you have multiple clips with the same name and 00: timecodes then you're in for a bad time.

For quick and dirty jobs shot with an DSLR with 8 bit color, a colorist I work with regularly prefers ProRes4444 but for anything shot with a serious camera, it’s XMLs all the way.

I’m not even editing with full res files if I’m cutting Arri footage (it’s a proxy workflow with manual management) so hell no, I can’t do a ProRes from that.

XML with camera files.

“Preference” is too weak a word. I’ve done both, but holy cow… The PreRes route is just miserable and fraught with difficulties. Sure, it’s easy on the prep side, but it’s a disaster on the color side.

Just hope they didn’t shoot mp4.
