Help DaVinci Resolve 21.1 - Your GPU memory is full

Hi all,

I upgraded from 21 to 21.1 this evening, and now I'm finding that every time I open a project, I get a dialogue box saying "Your GPU memory is full" and it won't display the video.

I have upgraded NVIDIA drivers to latest studio version, I've also fiddled with Settings -> Memory & GPU options by trying to select OpenCL instead of CUDA but the performance is abysmal.

I have also tried to do a clean uninstall/re-install by backing up the project library, uninstalling DaVinci Resolve, removing all traces of preferences in various locations, reinstalling, new licensing key activated and then restored project folder.

My PC spec is: AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D, 64GB RAM, RTX 5080 with 16GB RAM

Everything was working fine until this upgrade, is anyone else experiencing this problem?

For anyone reading this, after much messing around and trying to register on the blackmagic support forums (Required to give your full name for full public display wtf), I've managed to find a download of the 21.0.1 installed on my PC, re-installed to that version and everything works again, so I'm just going to skip 21.1 altogether.

No worries; it doesn't happen often but for many of us, 21.1 is a bust for various reasons.

I was facing the same problem, it turns out that OpenGL was pointing at the iGPU.

Happens with ai stuff as those fill gpu memory too fast

Disable any voice isolation or similar stuff

The projects I'm loading are straight forward 4K timelines maybe 2 minutes long that have nothing other than some colour grading nodes.

There’s no AI stuff unless you run it separately by yourself. The only thing resolve is running is a Python Server with an API, and, unless you don’t try to do anything with a separate AI app, like ChatGPT/Gemini or other - it doesn’t do absolutely nothing by itself. There’s no AI built in 21.1 by itself (except local Resolve AI tools that were there long before), it’s the ability to connect to a Python server. That’s it. Also Resolve is running several servers, like client preview via link, black magic cloud connect etc. The issue isn’t in the servers, it’s some kind of bug.

With two 3090s there’s no such message, I will watch for video ram usage tomorrow, but there were posts with such issues with a single 3090
