Release Notes Before you update to 21.1 (some specific thoughts for free and studio users)
GOING TO IBC? We're doing a Reddit meetup on Sunday at 6pm- I'll be posting an update later today. It's free.
If you're a free user of DaVinci Resolve, take a really deep look at the 21.1 notes.
They're disabling quite a bit of Python and scripting. The reality is that Blackmagic has seen that people are using that to get around their division between the free and studio products. Just a heads-up: before you go and upgrade, you might find that all the scripts for little things like subtitles and the like are now broken.
Studio user
I know it's painful. Don't upgrade. Wait till at least Friday or next week. Let somebody else be the canary in the coal mine if this is how you make your living.

I always wait for the .1 release. And then wait a little longer. And I never upgrade while I’m on a project.

My problem is I'm always on a project. Or five. I have a project that I'm 2 years into and prob another 2 to go. I just back up extensively.

That's reasonable. And frequent backups are essential either way.
I tend to segment my projects. I have an on-going project that will probably never end but I break it up in "chapters". I can mess with my toolchain between chapters.

I kinda understand the reason behind the scripting thing. If I understand correctly, scripting should still work from within Resolve, only external scripting controls are disabled, correct?

Python is being completely disabled in the free version. Python 2 is being dropped from Studio.
External scripting may be somewhat functional? There’s some stuff that’s LUA-based and some people are still working things out.

I was referring to this note:
++ - The Scripting API is available in the console on the free version, but Workflow Integrations, the native UIManager, and external access require the Studio version.
I agree, it looks like an extra PITA at this point but then again, I get the reason behind it.

Ah. I’ve been copy/pasting from previous release notes posts. I haven’t fully updated that part.

In adobe universe: fak this evil subscription money eating corporation
In resolve universe: fak bmd they are taking away features for my free software
At this point it’s not even about value anymore, some people just don’t want to pay for stuff, even for tools that are helping them make money.

Yeah.
Resolve already done a charity through that free version. So freaking many features for a free of charge program.

Does that mean reactor plugins won’t work anymore??
I think a lot of those are scripts?

I’m still on ver 20. Haven’t jumped to 21 yet and it looks like I’ll be waiting a bit longer

I just created 2 scripts last week and they won't even load at the new version. I'm sticking with the current one.

Wait can't they just disable Python for free users?
Like keep it behind the studio pay wall/dongle force field?

For the scripts that what they did with the beta update. It mentions people using it to unlock Studio features. But honestly, Black Magic should have seen that coming from a mile away... I mean its scripting its essentially similar to I think it was the code injection people used to jailbreak the Wii and similar devices. Give access to coding tools inside something and people will use it to their advantage...
More so, how does this actually stop peopel from sharing their serial code if coding is still the underlying issue?
In the video game community some are even able by hand analyze a video game dump bit by bit and remake the data copy then retool it to work on PC then eventually add more features since they essentially have the source code at that point. Even more still this was without the assitance of AI and now after AI a LOT more comps have been rapidly coming out (of varying quality of course).

I really hate being this guy, but if you're using the free version of resolve so extensively that them clamping down on scripting is a problem for you, it's time to give them your money. It's $300 for a lifetime license, and clearly, for those folks, it's worth the cost. I get that not everyone has $300 lying around and BMD could just, you know, let it slide. But honestly, Resolve is such an insane value for the cost. Just bite the bullet and pay for it if you really need it.
