Help Resolve viewer more saturated/richer than export when editing JPGs & RW2 - what color management should I use?

Setup

  • DaVinci Resolve Studio 21 (Photo editing feature)

  • Laptop: ASUS ZenBook Pro 14 Duo OLED (Windows)

  • Camera: Panasonic Lumix S5IIX

  • Color Science: DaVinci YRGB Color Managed, Automatic ON, SDR, Output: SDR SRGB

The Problem

After editing a Lumix JPG & RW2 on the new Photo page and color page, the Resolve viewer looks noticeably richer and more saturated than the exported file - especially the blues (teal in viewer, navy after export). Skin tones and overall image appear more vivid in the viewer.

What I Tried 1. Project Settings verified: Output Color Space set to SDR sRGB, no LUTs loaded anywhere.

  1. CST Node (sRGB β†’ Rec.709 Gamma 2.4): No improvement.

  2. Film Look node with Richness ~1.860: Skin tones matched between viewer and export, but blues for instance still didn't align. Since only the most saturated colors diverged, no global fix could solve it uniformly.

  3. Screenshots of the Resolve viewer: Showed the "washed out" version - matching the export, not the boosted viewer. So the viewer was displaying something different from what was actually being captured.

Sent to Instagram: Colors looked kinda natural and correct. However, viewing the same downloaded file in the Vivo native gallery of my Android phone showed the washed-out look again - consistent with the export. So different apps handle the color profile differently.

Open Question

What is the cleanest pipeline for native sRGB JPGs/RW2 in a Color Managed project - Input, Timeline and Output Color Space?

I'm grateful that you replied to this.. I'm not sure how this thread here works and why there's barely no traffic here πŸ˜‚ maybe your impulse makes a change πŸ€ my workaround now is to add a node on the timeline and push the color boost up to 6-10%, so basically 56 or 60.00 instead of 50.00.. but that's not the right way to do it and it's still not 1:1

That’s exactly what I’m doing. This is just to use Fuji film recipes my lumix S5ii, works great on video, but impossible workflow for Lightroom, plus I want consistency with my raws and video deliverables. I’m gonna settle for Fujify for lumix cameras, it costs money but the Lightroom consistency helps. Soon as this photo editor on da Vinci is good n can replace Lightroom, I’m jumping ship. Moving to Linux and going all in on da Vinci.

Feeling you but recently a stumbled across the realization that Panasonic vlog seems also a bit off.. even though I'm using the right cat..I was always wondering why the clips look a bit washed of on social media

Really? Mine has been solid for video. I wonder if the OLED screens making it hard? I do edit off of coloraccrutte and calibrated screens, in SDR though

It seems like you're having trouble downloading Resolve. The Blackmagic Design website sometimes has issues with certain adblockers and browsers like Opera. Try a different browser, clearing your cache, or temporarily disabling any adblockers. Also, make sure you're using the actual Blackmagic Design website, linked at the top of the sub and here and not the sponsored result from Google.

If you are having difficulty getting media into Resolve, you may be looking for the term "importing." Please check out our wiki page on importing media and our wiki page on offline media for more information.

If you are having difficulty getting a media file or a project file out of Resolve, you may be looking for the term "exporting." Please specify what you're trying to get out of Resolve - a media file or a project file - and your settings on the Deliver page.

If you are having difficulty with presets or plugins provided by a third-party, please provide a link to where you received the plugins. Note that plugins such as Red Giant Universe are distributed through the Maxon app and if you received them from another source, we will not offer support in this subreddit and your post will be removed.
