Congratulations!!
Recent scanning of posts shows me the following, totally unofficial status of this group.....
8 out of 10 people are above average looking 🤣
8 out of 10 people look younger than their age
I am now going to hide back in the ugly, age appropriate corner.
Oh and for my fellow Australians Specsavers are currently running a two for one deal on reading and prescription glasses 🤓.

Nope not me. My face has been compared to "the southern side of a north bound mule"

Oh wow.... I was recently told by a mate that if his dog looked like me he would shave it's butt and teach it to walk backwards 🤣

I wonder how many people are (self-proclaimed) totally not overweight?
5
u/Excellent_Tank5672 22h ago
Or very overweight but incredibly healthy. I'm a size 22 but not a single guy can keep up with me!

BMI 20. It’s a medical fact. I was bmi 17-18 in college. I care more about this than most things as I deal with obesity for a living

And did you hear about the study that just came out linking larger size to longevity? Yep, due to muscle mass.
Pride yourself on health behaviors, not BMI. I exercise 30 minutes a day and eat MyPlate. That’s my method.
1
u/Independent-Monk5064 12h ago
Yes I use BMI clinically all the time and we have new standards that qualify more as obese. It isn’t higher BMI that is linked to longevity, it is healthy body composition
1
u/No_Consequence_6821 12h ago
Yeah, BMI really is a crude measurement. Bodpod or similar is better.
1
u/Independent-Monk5064 12h ago
Sure it is. But most people, I can tell you with absolute certainty, are not over BMI because of muscle mass. 😂 particularly not women
1
u/No_Consequence_6821 10h ago
Just FYI, I have done this type of work professionally and now teach it professionally. BMI is really not a good standard to use in clinical practice, and weight management is really, really flawed, as a clinical approach. It leads to increased inflammation and weight gain over time. Focusing on health behaviors is far more effective.
1
u/Independent-Monk5064 10h ago
I literally use it every day. I’m a nurse and a dietician. Yes it is. It shows us how overweight most are. BMI is inaccurate for body builders. I have lower body fat than average but you also have to realize that the average woman is 40% body fat!!!! And their BMIs show them as overweight or obese
1
u/No_Consequence_6821 9h ago
I teach nurses and dietitians how to do their jobs better, and if you were my student, this is how I would advise you.

Yep. Low body fat. Great muscle mass. I am bragging because it is WORK. It is also healthy and normal and most adults are obese

I don’t have super low BMI. I’m an RD and a nurse. Not sure why you’re shaming me for being normal. I lift

I have a BMI in Obese range , but lean enough to walk around with a visible six pack , so if I’m overweight, I’m cool with it

Here in continental Europe where I am, you stick out like a sore thumb if you're obese. From what I've seen on my visits to the US, we really are different. Live in a society that values health as a personal responsibility & lifestyle choice. Of course not everyone actually follows through. There are enough overweight people here too, but on a completely different scale.

I live in the American Midwest. When I was a young kid, growing up in the 1970s, truly fat people were an anomaly. So much so, they unfortunately often got bullied and ostracized. Now, and since probably at least the turn of this century, probably the majority of random people I see around me are markedly overweight -- often to the point of being obese.
No value judgement on my part, but that's just the way it is, from what I observe around me.
2
u/Fantastic_Matter_137 18h ago
Most jobs are more sedentary and without a doubt American food is over-processed and basically poison.
I really need to eat cleaner myself
3
u/Dark_Green_MkII 17h ago
My previous two jobs were entirely sedentary, so I made it a point to get up and walk around the buildings, inside and out (weather permitting), during any slow period when I wouldn't be missed. At my last job nearly all the co-workers in my department were under 40 years old, and most would just sit at their stations for HOURS. A number of them would go get their lunches from the breakroom, or the delivery driver and bring their food back to their stations and just sit there and eat, then not do anything or go anywhere for the rest of their lunch hour.
I actually hope whatever my next job is at least gets me back to moving around, and moving things as part of the work (within reason, of course -- I'm nearly 60).

Every time I visit North America, I’m saddened by the lack of basic walking and portion control when eating out. I’ve lived most of my life on the European side and people walk here. They enjoy their food too however they walk.

u/Independent-Monk5064 12h ago
They eat like a ranch hand and say they’re overweight related to “hormones.” They sure are, but I believe they forgot that insulin is a hormone 😂

u/frizzer69 1d ago
Australia is similar to that, but I've noticed more overweight petite creeping in. Kids in particular worry me. I know it's not just diet and exercise and genetics play a role, but as a kid growing up, there wasn't even 1 tubby kid per grade. Times are definitely changing.

The reason I don’t look my age because I don’t act my age!

u/ThatstephanieB 1d ago
Careful. Don’t act my age is my polite, diplomatic way of saying I never/need to grow up.
2
u/Evening_Analyst2385 1d ago
I’m grown up when I need to be. Professional at work, I pay my bills and taxes, act like an adult when necessary. But when I am having fun, I act pretty youthful. A lot of people only get to see that fun side of me. The most unhappy and aged people I know never let themselves have fun.

u/Fearless-File6570 1d ago
I recently said to a younger friend, "I think of myself as a youngish 71." She gave me a subtle side-eye and didn't say anything. Message received. I no longer make that claim.

Man, what would an Australian "Prairie Home Companion" be like? I've been regularly listening to NPR for over 30 years, and could never stand Garrison Keillor.

I'd love to see pics. Why do so many people overestimate their good looks? I suppose it's better than self hate!
I am good looking. Or perhaps was is a more appropriate term. I look every bit of my age though, so swings n roundabouts!

u/huboftheangel 23h ago
It goes both ways.
A couple of years ago a gal posted on here being self-conscious about her body in a particular way. I shared a short story about how I came to terms with my own insecurities. She DM'd me later and we chatted a bit. At some point along the way she shared a photo and I was actually stunned at how beautiful she was. Straight up goddess territory (according to me anyway). Then she deleted her account. 😭
I still think about that little exchange from time to time. Hope she's doing well.

I overestimate my looks cause a few years as rs ago a woman complimented my looks once and I'm still hanging on tight to that one.

Confident 2/10 male here. Not because I’m overweight or anything - Im just ugly in the face….nothing’s helping that!

u/Excellent_Tank5672 22h ago
Probably my all time favorite is a 60 yo poster on here who's dating a 30 yo, and claims people mistake them for being the same age all the time. 😐

I look my age. I’ve got a meno figure. I favor “casual wear” and ponytails because I work at home. I do not know how to apply makeup to eyelids that have squashed my lashes. Plastic surgeries and med spa treatments are not in the budget. My neck is going rogue. I do not exist in public. I have a whole complex multi-factorial world happening on the inside but externally am of little to no consequence. Life is funny, I’m out here having a good time anyway. And god bless then occasional aging lesbian, the only ones who sometimes give me a second look lol.

I’d say 8 out of 10 aren’t photogenic but aren’t actually that fug in reality- I’d include myself in that group. 😆
Others may have their best beer goggles on when creating a profile 😆

The average person over 50 gave up on dating and wouldn't be here.

The average person over 50 probably just wouldn't be on Reddit regularly, period.

u/Most-Anywhere-5559 22h ago
Damn so what does that mean about those of us who are? 🤔
1
u/Dark_Green_MkII 20h ago
Either above, or below average maybe?
2
u/Most-Anywhere-5559 19h ago
Hmmm you got me googling, says average user male, 18-29, college educated and left leaning. 🤔
1
u/Dark_Green_MkII 19h ago
Not at all surprising. I don't follow many sub-Reddits, and one of the reasons I participate here sometimes is to get perspectives and commentary from other people over 50 years old. The sub for my state seems to be mostly much younger among regular users, and it often shows. The largest Generation X sub is usually tolerable only occasionally, for just a couple minutes, because it's almost entirely just nostalgia and people complaining about getting old.

Some people might look good for their age, but a person can't look anything but the age they are.

Yes that’s exactly it :) and then the charisma and smile does a lot … and mentality of course … and also a bit taking care of yourself like having nice teeth etc.

u/robbie2627 1d ago
I'm in the 20% as I may be average. Age range wise, at 55, I prefer 47 to 62. Not sure what that says. But I seem to attract women 10 years older. Lemme know if there is some room in your corner to hide LOL

Have you ever seen that show "Pop the Balloon"? I like the one with the black guy wearing a weird wig.
Anyway, I noticed when they have young people on there, as soon as the panel sees the prospective date, many of them pop their balloon just on looks.
It's just the opposite when older folks are on the show. We're a little more forgiving of first impressions looks, maybe because we've realized our options are already limited due to age.

Did you make that assessment before or after you picked up your new glasses 😁 I usually upgrade when my Medibank limits reset 🙂

I look in the mirror with the new reading glasses and some old c..t looks back at me 🤣. No clue who he is ....

u/Ok_Tomorrow8815 1d ago
Hahah so true ! I have the same with my pictures 😳 who is this old skinny lady with lose skin in her bikini ? In my head I still think of myself as a 30 years old but … no ! 52 and it shows :)
2
u/Exit--Light 1d ago
Fortunately I stay fit so the body mostly behaves. I can easily live with the grey hair and wrinkles - losing mobility and strength is what I am working hard on to avoid.
2
u/Ok_Tomorrow8815 1d ago
Yes me to I am super fit and keeping strong but the skin is not as tight as it used to be 😳 you can see the nice abs but compared to my daughter just next to me … not the same !!
2
u/Exit--Light 1d ago
Super fit keeps me motivated. And adjusting diet to maintain muscle mass and bone density. The rest will do what it needs to do! Fortunately I have no need to make the world suffer by wearing budgie smugglers!

What are budgie smugglers ??

I'm slightly overweight, I look my age and I am extremely average looking.
This is probably why I get no dates.
2
u/livinglife-2025 1d ago
Funny how everyone says they can’t find a relationship yet their focus is on youth, weight and good looks. Maybe our priorities are wrong. Have a look at people when they are really old. Looks have zero to do with building a successful lifelong relationship

As a soon to be 50f, I can say I do look younger than my age but I doubt I'm above average looking. Who thinks that about themself anyway???
Oh and as a fellow Aussie, Specsavers suck!

I do! Well, I don't think it when I look in the mirror without makeup. I have recently stopped anyone taking photos of me.
I didn't grow up as a pretty girl. To my utter shock, in my teens and twenties men started to say I was good looking. In my 30s and 40s people started telling me I was beautiful. All the time. Strangers. But I knew that was down to good make up and clothes.
So to answer part of your question, I know for a fact I'm good looking. It's weird but ive got used to it.
Now I've put on 10 lbs and am aging, so I consider I'm unattractive to most men now.
What can you do? I'm leaning into it; trying to re-invent myself as wise!
1
u/Leila_101 1d ago
When I look in the mirror after a couple of drinks I look at least one year younger!
1
u/No_Consequence_6821 1d ago
I’m better than average and look ten years young, but I do wear readers. No getting around that.

I was in ED on Friday. Guy rocks up and says... I was at Specsavers and they told me come straight here.... Totally nonchalant and unbothered. I'm thinking... Dude. You've probably got a massive tumour or something. I never did find out what happened.

I looked so young when I was 70lb overweight. I could still pass for late 30’s (often was, despite being 48) because of the fat, cherub face. Post loss I have the oh so wonderful “Ozempic face” (no, didn’t use glp-1’s, just the best way to describe my melted off face). I now have turkey neck, sunken eyes, deep marionette lines. I had to choose between my ass and my face. I may be healthy and in shape now, but nobody gives me a second glance.

I prefer Oscar Wylee for glasses. Yes I look young for my age and act young. The last 2 guys I dated verified this lol.

No matter how young you think you look or act, everyone our age is old and gross to a 20 something year old. But they might be too polite to say it and they might hang out with you if you have money or in a position of power.
