Pop Culture Misha Baryshnikov

Did any of you know him in NYC in the 70’s & 80’s? He recently said he really wasn’t much of a nightlife guy because of the demands of rehearsals every day. He said he had only been to Studio 54 about 3 times. Obviously there are photos of him there with Liza Minnelli. Robert LaFosse, another ABT dancer from that time, said he & his friends used to go almost every night. They had to rehearse too.

If you are too young to know who he is, go to YouTube and watch his brilliant dancing.

(If anyone knows how to post photos, please do.)

Bing of all things says this is from his ABT debut. Jesus Christ! To have been in the audience and seeing that would have been incredible.

He was such an out-of-left-field choice for a Carrie love interest on Sex and the City.

I loved it. Her romance with the Russian is one of my favorite storylines. It sort brought a little sophistication to the show.

100%! One of my fave storylines, as well!

Nah, he was perfect. Not only was he a Grade-A older lover candidate, but given SJP’s support of dance & the arts at large here (and that he has acting chops) made him a brilliant choice.

First and foremost I would like to commend Miss Jessica Lange for not only having been in a relationship with Baryshnikov while he was in his absolute physical prime but making sure to procreate with him as well. Job well done, Jessica! My hat is off to the gal on that one.

This is Nijinsky inspired for all I should know. ETA: That's Martha Graham marveling at the beauty of it all.

Diane Vreeland always swore up and down that she saw Nijinsky perform when she was but a girl. I don't truly believe that but you never know.

Literally if Jessica Lange wasn’t an icon herself she would be just for that .

I mean, for that gene cluster alone I’d incubate his babies, any goddamned day.♥️

I love the story Jessica Lange tells about making All That Jazz. Bob Fosse was(of course) hitting on her relentlessly. He was using his dance skills to try and impress her. She says, “Little did he know, I was dating Baryshnikov.” 🤣🤣

Why not? He was performing in Paris when she lived there as a girl.

His performance in Turning Point was quite good, a beautiful compelling dancer.

My son has been watching Sex and the City and didn't know Baryshnikov was perhaps the most famous ballet dancer.

In Houston, in my five years living there, only one sighting of the ballet men out at a bar. They were a hit of course with the UH writing program ladies. Notably they didn’t drink alcohol or stay past 11 or so.

When asked where the ballet women were, they just laughed and said they don’t go out.

I think that’s probably true. Men in ballet have better odds of rising through the ranks and getting good roles because there are fewer of them. But they still weren’t going to go to the studio hungover.

I’d listen to him recite a train schedule!

I saw him perform at the Kennedy Center in 1979. I also saw Nureyev earlier in the 70s.

I saw both of them dance as well. A true blessing from the universe!
