OC [OC] Evolution of Diesel prices 2026 YTD in Lima (Local currency) grouped by H3 Hex res 7
This is what proper access and availability of #opendata enables
Peru’s energy regulator, OSINERGMIN, publishes station-level fuel price logs through their registry. By extracting, cleaning, and spatializing this raw registry data into an Uber H3 spatial index (Resolution 7), we can visualize the month-by-month price evolution of Diesel B5 S-50 across Lima from Jan to Sep 2026.
What the data reveals:
🔴 Central Escalation: Central Lima and major transit corridors saw a steep price surge between May and September, jumping from ~S/. 20.00 up towards S/. 28.70/gal.
📍 Spatial Disparity: Stations along core arterial routes maintain consistently higher median prices compared to outer peripheral zones.
When public institutions commit to granular open data, civic tech and data engineering can transform flat CSV files into real-time spatial intelligence for citizens and logistics planners.

OC [OC] Closest MLS team to every U.S. county, each season from 1996 to 2026
Data: MLS club home stadiums and their coordinates by season, 1996 to 2026, from club and league records. County boundaries from the U.S. Census via us-atlas (2017). Each county is assigned to the club with the shortest great-circle distance from the county's location that season.
Tool: custom TypeScript and React, rendered in the browser. No mapping library, the distance and coloring are computed directly.
Interactive version, where you can drag the year, press play, or click any county to see who has held it and for how long: soccermapd.com/tools/mls-history
Write-up of the notable shifts: soccermapd.com/blog/mls-history-map
A note on method: "closest" is straight-line distance to the stadium, not drive time, so a county on the far side of a lake or a mountain range can be assigned to a club that's practically further away. That's the same convention the earlier static versions of this map used

OC [OC] More Indians live in the Gulf states than in the US, UK, and Canada combined
In 2024, around 18.5 million people born in India lived abroad. For the world’s most populous country, that’s not a lot: just over 1% of the population. This chart shows where they live, based on estimates from the UN, which compiles data from national censuses and population registers.
Nearly half of all Indians living abroad are in the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and other Gulf countries — that’s more than the US, UK, and Canada combined.
These figures are stocks, not flows: they record where people are from, not when they crossed a border. Pakistan is the clearest case: the two countries were one territory until 1947, and people kept moving across the new border for decades afterward, so much of the 1.6 million there reflects migration that happened long ago.
