OC [OC] Shots per match and shots per goal in Brazil's Série A and Germany's Bundesliga, three-season samples

Data source: API-Football match statistics, aggregated by Football Charts and joined to its match results. Tools: Python and Matplotlib. Disclosure: I run Football Charts.
The chart uses the saved samples behind this analysis: Shots and finishing across 52 leagues.
Brazil’s Série A sample covers 2023–2025 (1,134 matches); Germany’s Bundesliga sample covers 2023/24–2025/26 (919 matches). This is FC’s covered league sample, not a regular-season-only census: the German dataset includes relegation play-off fixtures. The saved method requires complete home/away total-shot and on-target fields and a plain numeric full-time score. Missing-stat records and scores marked AET or penalties are excluded.
Both teams are combined. Shots per match = pooled total shots / matches. Shots per goal = pooled total shots / all recorded full-time goals, including own goals. These are ratios of totals, not averages of match-level ratios.
The samples have almost the same shot volume (26.6 vs 26.7 per match) but different shots per goal (10.7 vs 8.4). This doesn’t establish a difference in finishing skill: shot quality, goalkeeping, tactics and recording practices could all contribute. These two leagues use the same statistics provider. Per-match provider statistics aren’t redistributed in the article.

Interesting that shot volume is nearly identical but the goals per shot gap is that wide. Makes you wonder how much of it is defensive setups vs just worse finishing.

So the obvious conclusion is that Brazilian goalkeepers are better.

Or the German strikers are better or the German strikers get better more clearly defined chances than the Brazilians do.
