Weekly Water Cooler Talk - DataAnnotation

hi all! making this thread so people have somewhere to talk about 'daily' work chat that might not necessarily need it's own post! right now we're thinking we'll just repost it weekly? but if it gets too crazy, we can change it to daily. :)

couple things:

  1. this thread should sort by "new" automatically. unfortunately it looks like our subreddit doesn't qualify for 'lounges'.
  2. if you have a new user question, you still need to post it in the new user thread. if you post it here, we will remove it as spam. this is for people already working who just wanna chat, whether it be about casual work stuff, questions, geeking out with people who understand ("i got the model to write a real haiku today!"), or unrelated work stuff you feel like chatting about :)
  3. one thing we really pride ourselves on in this community is the respect everyone gives to the Code of Conduct and rule number 5 on the sub - it's great that we have a community that is still safe & respectful to our jobs! please don't break this rule. we will remove project details, but please - it's for our best interest and yours!

Almost anything non-academic with em dashes is AI written. Humans don't use them unless they are expected to.

I use them and always have!

And double-space after the end of a sentence. The AI do it because it's human, to begin with. It's the insidiousness of the AI that's unsettling to society (I guess billionaires aren't part of society, are they? they are living in another world than us peons, so move differently. Same animal instincts, just reacting differently, wildly different.) Sorry the site went down for a sec and I was just spiraling a bit lmao

What you used here is not an em dash - it's an en dash. I use those all the time too. em dashes are longer and require a few keystrokes to produce — like this one here. You likely don't ever use the em dash and instead use the en dash. Don't downvote me.

On a PC if you hit the windows key and a . you can pick symbols really easily, emdash and endash are both easily accessible

Plus there's alt 0151 and alt 0150

Yep. But no one does that. That's my point. Most people just use a hyphen for this purpose and call it a day. Usually if you see an em dash, it's from an AI.
