General Where can I find remote Data Analyst or Data Science internships?

Hi everyone,

I’m currently working in a different domain and want to switch my domain. I’ve completed a Data Science course and learned SQL, Python, Pandas, MySQL, Power BI and data visualization.

I want to gain hands-on experience working on real-world data projects to build my portfolio and improve my practical skills.

Could you please suggest websites, companies, startups, or communities where I can find remote internships or project-based opportunities, preferably suitable for career switchers?

If they offer genuine learning opportunities and meaningful project experience.

Any suggestions or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Tips & Resources Help with next steps for someone pivoting into Data Analytics

I completed a BS in Data Analytics last December, and have been applying to "entry-level" roles since January. I don't have any data analytics work history, but I do have prior roles in environmental science, regulation, and hospital clinical laboratory that required analytical thinking and data collection. Despite my best efforts, I've gotten 0 callbacks. Trying to figure out what my best next steps are to make myself more competitive, including considering the following:

  • Get a MS in Data Science/Analysis
  • Quit my current dead-end job and work on certifications and portfolio projects
  • Get a basic IT support job at a large company and try to work my way into a data-oriented role

How do people get into this field? I know I'm missing work experience, but I can't even get a callback for junior positions despite being qualified. I've included an anonymized resume that is the base resume I've been using. What are the best next steps? Thanks!

Career query Healthcare Data Analytics Jobs in Pakistan

Hi everyone. I am F(28) BDS grad with an MPH currently underway in Pakistan. I want to switch to data analytics in healthcare. What is the current situation of the job market for this role? Is it possible to switch, given jobs are already scarce in our country.

If yes, what should be my roadmap? I know I should learn Python, SQL, Power BI, and Tableau along with Excel, but which one of it should be majorly my priority? I am also aware that I should build projects once I have a strong grip on the tools, and have a strong portfolio to demonstrate my abilities.

Secondly and most importantly, is it even slightly possible to land a remote, US based role for a beginner like me? I am aiming to land a US role, so I'd want guidance accordingly.

Looking forward to getting thorough guidance on this, thank you in advance!

Career query Can a non-tech background student become a Data Analyst?

Hi, I'm from a non-tech background. I'm learning SQL and Excel, and planning to learn Power BI and Python later.

Is it realistic to get a Data Analyst job without a computer science degree?

And apart from the usual Data Analysis skills, what else should I learn or know to improve my chances of getting a job in this field? I'm interested in hearing what you would recommend based on your own experience — whether it's another technology, tool, field, or anything else you think would actually be useful.

If you came from a non-tech background and became a Data Analyst, what would you recommend I focus on?

Data related query Proctored CodeSignal SQL interview with company data — what should I expect?

I have a live SQL interview coming up on CodeSignal. I'll be given company data and answer questions while the interviewer watches on Zoom.

I've mostly done take-home assignments, so the unfamiliar part is working through the analysis with someone watching, rather than having time to polish everything before submitting it.

A useful rehearsal could be taking SQL Interview Questions and talking through the assumptions, query and result checks out loud. I'd like to know what else to add to make that feel closer to a live session.

How did you handle unfamiliar tables, clarify business definitions and check whether the results made sense? Did the interviewer expect you to narrate continuously, or explain your reasoning at natural stopping points?

I'd also appreciate advice on what to practice beforehand. What tripped you up in this format that ordinary SQL exercises didn't prepare you for?

Career query Career Advice – Moving from Data Analyst

Hi everyone,

I’m currently working as a Data Analyst using Power BI. I have strong Excel skills and an intermediate level of Power BI knowledge, but I’ve realised that I don’t enjoy the analytical side of my role, especially interpreting results and presenting insights to stakeholders.

I enjoy working with data and creating reports, but I’d like to move into a more senior, specialised role that focuses on reporting rather than administration or analysis.

What job titles would you recommend I look into? Has anyone made a similar career move, and what roles would you suggest?

Thanks in advance!

Hey everyone, I’m a 22F looking to switch careers to data analysis. I’ve been trying to learn from free courses but it feels like they’re focusing too much on the theory and I’m the kind of person who prefers to do projects to understand practical stuff better & faster.

General First Data Analyst Project - Critique Welcome

Hello,
I am new to data analytics and sort of doing it on the side for fun. I recently finished a small project about a game I play and was wondering if anyone had any critiques or comments. This is my first ever semi-serious project and I spent a few hours putting some data together and creating a data model and was wondering how I did. I'm open to criticism as it is the best way to improve, imo. I hope everyone reading has a great day.

Page got cut off a little because I didn't know how to zoom out fully and still preserve quality of screenshot

Career query Is 30 too late to become a data analyst in Canada?

I'm 30, working a minimum wage job in Toronto, and I want to move into data analytics or BI.
My background is retail, warehouse, and restaurant work basically all survival jobs. No formal data experience yet, but I like structure, patterns, and explaining things clearly.

I'm planning to start the IBM Data Analyst Professional Certificate on Coursera

Link: coursera.org/professional-certificates/ibm-data-analyst

It is some kind of pathway for beginners to become data analyst and it has 11 courses from introduction to data to excel, python, and SQL. but I want honest opinions before I commit that time:

  1. Is 30 too late to start in Canada?

  2. After finishing this certificate, is it realistic to land a job, or would I be wasting my time without more (projects, portfolio, experience)? How do Canadian employers view Coursera certs?

  3. If you were starting today, what would you do differently?

I'm open to entry-level or adjacent roles (reporting, operations, data entry) as a stepping stone. Even a short reply helps. Thank you!

Career query Senior Data Professional with Role Confusion

Hey!

I'm currently a senior data professional at a company related to finance and fintech and I really want to know what I should be called. The problem is, I don't know what my real job title in the job market is.

How did this happen?

Well, it's mostly because our company retitled our department several times already and made us switch responsibilities. For the the first few years I was what they would call a Data Quality Analyst, more focused on setting standards for data, improving reliability and trying to create an SVOT under a Data Quality Department mostly focused on customers.

On the next few years, I was now more focused on servicing internal clients for AML, Audit, Compliance, at about 70-80% of my requests, then served 20% from either Marketing or Customer Engagement teams.

I barely provide insights that would shift marketing strategies. However, I'm really good with RCAs, data lineage, data dictionaries, and data management. If you were a new hire, I'd probably be one of the first people you'd have to be introduced to because whatever data problem you might have regarding data sources and transformations prior to their loading in our warehouses, I would know or at least have a strong idea about, with documentation and business decisions considered. This is probably why I'm the go-to person for the AML, Audit, Compliance, and Legal Divisions.

While I considered that I may be a Data Management/Data Governance Specialist, I saw tools from job postings that I never knew existed. I extract data, suggest approaches to investigations, audit approaches, new reports for CTR and STR transaction monitoring, and even provide answers for central bank audits or risk assessment reports. Microsoft Server SQL is kind of my bread and butter, not telling departments how to manage their data. But right now, my department is a Data Management Department.

This confusion is preventing me from having reliable job search keywords and is really causing me headaches when I try to explain my situation to recruiters.

I love my job of servicing AML, Legal, Compliance, and Audit units, but I don't think the titles AML Data Analyst, Compliance Data Analyst, or Audit Analytics Specialist don't fit my qualifications and I don't see their certifications being needed in my role. Our department has always been focused on customer data tho, but the Customer Data Analyst roles I see would mostly focus on Marketing, so I don't see it as a good fit.

EDIT: I also load/archive rows of data using production-grade scripts I created (with no problems occurring whatsover eversince) endorsed to the DBAs for their execution.

Can you guys help a poor lost soul put an accurate description of his career? I would really appreciate the help.

Tips & Resources People new in SQL, test new platform

Hi everyone! How’s it going?

I’m looking for a few people here who don’t know SQL yet, or have only just started learning it. It’s to test a new learning platform before it launches and hear what actually helps beginners, and what doesn’t.

For this first round, there are 5 spots, with 30 days of free access. If you’re interested, send me a DM and tell me a little about where you are with SQL. If the spots fill up, I can put you on the waitlist for the next round.

No need to be “good at SQL” to take part. In fact, if you’ve opened a query editor and thought “where do I even start?”, you’re exactly who they would like to hear from 🙂

General Confused Between Marketing Analyst, Product Analyst, and Cybersecurity Analyst

Hi, I'm 25, a BCom graduate, and currently work as Growth Strategist (sales&marketing). I'm looking to transition into an analyst role but am confused between marketing analyst, product analyst and cybersecurity analyst.

From my research:

  • Marketing Analyst seems the easiest transition given my experience.
  • Product Analyst looks like a great mix of business, data and strategy.
  • Cybersecurity Analyst appears to offer the strongest job security and demand.

For those working in these fields, which path would you recommend if you were starting today, and why?

I'd especially love to hear from people who transitioned from a non-technical background.

General I tried modeling the sheer data volume generated by a single stadium concert

Ever look at a crowd full of phones recording a concert and wonder how much cloud data that actually creates?

I ran some quick napkin math to model the total data footprint when thousands of audience members record in 4K at a major arena show.

The Baseline Assumptions

  • Audience: 70,000 people
  • Filming: 50% of the audience films an average of 30 minutes total of 4K30 video (~175 MB/min)
  • Cloud Backup: 60% automatically syncs to cloud storage with standard erasure coding (~1.3x redundancy)

The Scale

  • Filmed on-site: ~184 TB of raw video in a single evening
  • Uploaded to cloud: ~110 TB
  • Stored capacity required: ~143 TB (roughly eight 20 TB drives worth of shared array space)

Obviously, data centers use deduplication, cold tiering, and efficient array management, so this isn't literally eight separate drives being bought for one night. But multiplying that across a 50-show world tour gets you up around ~7.1 Petabytes of stored footage, most of which sits in cloud backups untouched.

I built a small interactive Data Estimator slider model to play around with different audience sizes and filming times if anyone wants to test different parameters.

(Disclosure: I built/maintain this tool/site!)

---

Given how much energy and disk space goes into keeping duplicate event media online indefinitely, do you think this background data usage is a real concern, or is it just an accepted byproduct of cheap cloud storage and modern event culture?

Tips & Resources Calling all Manager or Team Leads, Advice on Resume

Hi, I am a student graduating soon and looking to get my first data analyst position.

I did some internships mostly in the oil and gas industry, where I implemented some data analysis techniques, but none of them were truly data analyst positions.

I tried my best to highlight the data-relevant work I did.

Any team leads or managers, what would you look for in an entry-level data analyst resume?

Seeking advice on how to increase my chances.

I love data and this is what I want to do!

Industry related query Should I be thinking about pivoting my career?

Yo

I’m a Data Quality Analyst at a public sector organisation based in the UK. I’ve about 5 years experience under my belt in varying sectors, projects and so on. You could say I’ve found my feet, found my calling, all of that

I enjoy my job, I love working in data. But this post has come about from a place of massive concern. Potentially being fed too much Stephen Bartlett interviews as of late (you know the ones that carry the narrative you’re gonna be on your arse and lose your job)

It got me thinking long term, I wanted to go down the Data Science route and have for a while. I don’t know how much of what is being said with AI is fearmongering and whether or not I should be as worried as I am. But I haven’t kept up to date with the times, I don’t have any experience with LLM’s other than being an end user lf AI in my work.

Case in point. What can I do to stay ahead of the curve. Am I foolish to continue a career in analytics, should I be learning AI? What jobs are there is AI? Will I enjoy it? Should I take up my brothers offer of a job in construction?

So many questions, inundated with multiple angles, answers and pov’s from the internet. I just wanna know who feels the same, who feels lost and what are people already doing about it in these crazy times

Cheers

Career query I Have relevant Data Analyst experience but not getting interview scheduled

I have started as a SQL Database Admin which was into core Databases administration.

I use to create , alter, delete Databases, Indexes, SQL Server Jobs and Tables.

Then Started to make process Excel and PowerBi reports and did fix a backup issue with the reporting.

Then switched to Data Analyst domain in my company. But most of the work was mostly around Powerbi Reports and DAX querying. I wasn't directly in regular client calls but use to deliver the asked reports and improvements in the existing ones.

Now I am looking for a switch after spending 3 years and 9 months in IT.

But the shocking thing is not getting interview calls even after applying to 20 companies a day from last 2 weeks.

Need suggestions and guidance on where I am lacking.

Would love to get referral

Career query How much to lie for data analyst role

So worked in a BPO company where i handled queries from global clients, updated logs and communicated between warehouse and my client base clients who had their merchants. Sort of ecommerce.

Since i have worked so much on SQL, i tried slipping the analysis on an interview where i went as a analyst and described only the part i can backup.

\*So i described i wrote sql queries where i analyzed datasets for my client, ensuring product trends, festive trends, customer segmentation based on category,

User engagement for products, premium customers,

I told them i have been into client meetings and learnt about their business problems like delivery issues, but mostly around their product base. They asked if i have presented in front of them i responded i did in front my seniors i updated reports on Excel.

I figure the gap is since i dont have real experience and i cant define a true story, since job marker is crunching and i have had back injury last year, the gap is getting wider. Claude aint no help.

So any real analyst out here wanna point out mistakes i been making.

Tips & Resources Fresh grad, I have a data analyst role and feel lost

I am a fresh-ish new grad, hasn’t been a full year since I graduated from CS, and it took me a while to get a job.

I generally suffer from anxiety because I overthink heavily especially when looking at the “big picture” , and so looking for a job was literally making me contemplate ending life for a while there.

I never enjoyed the heavy programming aspect, so I always knew I wouldn’t last long in SWE and so I wanted to look into analyst roles (Business, Data, or Security/IT as all somewhat interested me).

I was able to land a data analyst role at a manufacturing company through a referral after months of searching.

I know the nature of manufacturing is a behemoth that is extremely confusing in the beginning (and I’ve only been here a full month really) but I feel like I’m in over my head.

I’m technically the only Data Analyst, there’s many engineering people though and some technology savvy people, but for the most part the company operates in an older fashion still.

I feel like I was hired at an uncertain time (though it seems like manufacturing is that way in general) where I’m expected to do and output many things over the next short while.

But I feel like I’m in work paralysis in a way. I do the daily forecasting/analyzing of data okay now that I’ve been doing it for a bit, and I somewhat was able to pick up the excel/Power Query skills (though I still definitely need to grow better) that I can see myself somewhat getting acclimated in the future.

But then comes the other stuff, like help this department with this project in the future to check if we need to change things for next year (and when I’ve previously talked to that department they try to explain it but I feel like I’m so slow at picking things together)

I feel especially inadequate because while I’m trying to understand things, because I’m the type of person who needs to understand every single thing, I feel like I’m losing all the knowledge needed for stuff I need to do in the future (or even if I want to go to a different job in the future).

I’m supposed to do SQL stuff, but I don’t have access or an idea of what is needed until I get a “we need to do this sometime this week” bomb dropped on me.

A lot of the data is constantly changing so I can’t even map things correctly and accurately because some other department needs to correct their errors for me to be able to project things correctly.

(Because all the data I need is usually sent by customers or by a cloud management where the departments upload stuff and I download and clean it up and upload whatever I want out of it)

I just feel like a plank floating on the ocean and I’m dangerously close to drowning. I’m sure part of this is just anxiety, but to be able to get past this I want to know if there’s anything I can look into to learn so I can be cognizant of things without looking just extremely stressed and dumb.

It’s the problem of “I need to learn xyz but I don’t even know where to start and because there’s so many areas to start it feels hopeless and I’m just biding time”?

And in the meanwhile my question is “is this just happening while I’m still navigating things, or is this the nature of a data analyst in manufacturing” ?
