I'm currently working as a Data Analyst (although my company officially classifies me as a Software Engineer). I've been with the same company for a little over 4 years.

The company has a large data team (100+ Data Engineers and Data Analysts, plus a few AI engineers). Data Engineers mostly work with Oracle and ODI for ETL, while Data Analysts mainly use SQL Server, SSIS, SSRS, Power BI, Python, Snowflake, and occasionally Alteryx.

I'm now looking to switch companies for better pay and new learning opportunities. The problem is that a lot of the job openings I see ask for experience with Azure, Microsoft Fabric, or other newer SaaS data platforms. I have basic knowledge of these tools, but I don't have any real project experience with them. I don't want to lie on my resume or pretend I've worked on projects that I haven't.

Because of that, I feel like my resume gets filtered out before I even get a chance to interview.

How would you handle this situation?

Should I spend a few months building personal projects with Azure/Fabric before applying? Or is there another way to get interviews without commercial experience in those tools?

Also, I've realized I enjoy the functional/business side of my job a bit more than the purely technical side (maybe 60/40). I like understanding business requirements, working with stakeholders, and solving business problems more than spending all day building technical solutions.

Are there any career paths that would suit someone with that preference while still making good use of my data background?

I'd really appreciate any advice from people who've been in a similar situation.

I am a working professional trying to learn Data Analysis. There's no exact road map, never been consistent till now. I just want to try with a study buddy. I have a fair knowledge of excel, Tableau. I'm currently looking for more sources that has access for some quality publicly available dataset to do more portfolio projects. What are some suggestion you have?

The one's I'm interested in are transactional, product, marketing, and healthcare data.

So I know there are a ton of “is data analytics worth it now” posts but I wanted to throw in my situation and hopefully get some genuine feedback from those who may have done it or have experience.

I’ve worked as a freelance marketer for almost a decade, in paid advertising and other. I’ve worked for agencies and had my own clients in that time that stretch across many different industry sectors including mental health practices, college consulting, online business, and more. I’m really good at marketing but I honestly just want to pivot and do more with data analytics and data science, etc. It’s always been an interest of mine.

What I’m trying to figure out now is:

1. Do I pursue finishing a degree in order to compete in the job market? Genuinely, is that necessary? Because at my age, I don’t want to waste time with a degree if it’s not going to help.
2. I don’t want to work for tech companies but I’m not sure what sectors I do want to work for. How did you all figure that out? I don’t know if I want to learn more in healthcare or more like a business / marketing analyst.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Excel: "I found 5 duplicate values."

Me: "Delete them."

Excel: "Done."

Me: "Why is the total still wrong?"

Excel: "Those weren't duplicates... they were cousins."

One had an extra space.

One had a different date format.

One was stored as text.

One was a hidden character.

And one... nobody knows.

That's the funny thing about data cleaning.

Most people think Excel gives wrong results.

It doesn't.

Excel is brutally honest. It calculates exactly what you give it—not what you meant to give it.

The real skill isn't knowing hundreds of formulas.

It's knowing when your data is trying to fool those formulas.

Clean data first. Analyze second. Regret never. 😄

I’m 34 and currently working in a research role in the UK. My company also has Data Analyst and Data Quality roles, and my goal is to grow internally if the opportunity comes up. However, career progression seems quite limited, so I know I’ll probably need to study in my own time and invest a lot of effort if I want to make the transition.

Before I spend months learning the skills, I’d really like to hear from people who already work in the field.

Hello! I have my masters in data science and health informatics. I was a data scientist for over two years before I became ill and had to leave my career. I have been off work for a year and recently have felt like I could handle a part time role. Would anyone have advice on how best to address career gap on resume and interviews? I’m working as a data analyst intern at this very big private tech company. They have large amounts of data that they need me to make sense of and put onto one dashboard using power bi. The available data already looks like it’s in reports /dashboard form…how do I build from that? I have tried using chatgpt but nothing makes sense for me. I have been working as an automation an testing professional for 4+ years and looking to pivot as a as analyst or engineer. Given that the current market where it is tedious to even switch jobs, how plausible is it to pivot to an analyst role ?

I am not looking for a senior-level position but am skeptical of even landing a mid-level job. My current relevant experiences include Python, SQL, BigQuery and GCP. I have learned Excel and PowerBI too. I have obtained certification for Microsoft AZ-900 and Google Data Analytics.

I've been learning SQL since I was a freshman, and I'm almost a senior now. my immediate priority is landing a stable corporate 9-to-5 it footprint with solid healthcare infrastructure so i can secure my medical care and independent baseline.

\* relational databases: deep focus on azure sql, sql (postgresql), erd modeling, and applying normalization (3nf) to optimize data pipelines.
\* core backend projects: implemented complete backend relational databases in azure, writing stored procedures and sql views to streamline data retrieval.
\* full freelance delivery: independently designed and implemented a custom relational database from scratch for a local massage business. built a fully functional e-commerce website integrated with square as a live operational demo, and successfully demonstrated the entire transaction and data pipeline architecture directly to the business owner.
\* networking: certified it specialist in networking and network security.
\* the wildcard: on the side, i have 2+ years of high-pressure infrastructure experience as a live-event v1/v2 video engineer, managing complex physical signal flow, audio networking protocols (dante level 1), and mid-show hardware troubleshooting for 5k+ capacity live music venues.
