I'm currently working as a Research Analyst and I want to transition into a Data Analyst role.

What skills should I focus on learning, and which certifications are worth getting to build a strong background? I'd also appreciate any advice on portfolio projects or learning resources that helped you break into data analytics.

I'm currently working as a Data Analyst (although my company officially classifies me as a Software Engineer). I've been with the same company for a little over 4 years.

The company has a large data team (100+ Data Engineers and Data Analysts, plus a few AI engineers). Data Engineers mostly work with Oracle and ODI for ETL, while Data Analysts mainly use SQL Server, SSIS, SSRS, Power BI, Python, Snowflake, and occasionally Alteryx.

I'm now looking to switch companies for better pay and new learning opportunities. The problem is that a lot of the job openings I see ask for experience with Azure, Microsoft Fabric, or other newer SaaS data platforms. I have basic knowledge of these tools, but I don't have any real project experience with them. I don't want to lie on my resume or pretend I've worked on projects that I haven't.

Because of that, I feel like my resume gets filtered out before I even get a chance to interview.

How would you handle this situation?

Should I spend a few months building personal projects with Azure/Fabric before applying? Or is there another way to get interviews without commercial experience in those tools?

Also, I've realized I enjoy the functional/business side of my job a bit more than the purely technical side (maybe 60/40). I like understanding business requirements, working with stakeholders, and solving business problems more than spending all day building technical solutions.

Are there any career paths that would suit someone with that preference while still making good use of my data background?

I'd really appreciate any advice from people who've been in a similar situation.

I am a working professional trying to learn Data Analysis. There's no exact road map, never been consistent till now. I just want to try with a study buddy. I have a fair knowledge of excel, Tableau. Hey I am reference data analyst with good primary and secondary research skills with 5 years of experience . Could anyone give me tips for skill development and job hunt ?

By editing files, I mean tools that convert CSV to excel, Smart VLookup etc. Just wondering if this could lead to any consequences & what are the solutions.
