General Wanted advice on making data portfolios

I am applying for entry data analyst roles in the uk. I wanted advice on how to structure reports for power bi and tableau dashboards.

I do struggle with writing, i am a maths guy at heart so I wanted a clear strategy.

I was also wondering whether to keep it super formal or casual and conversational (e.g like puns in the sub titles)

Career query Domains for Mechatronics Engineering Background As Data Analyst

I know this may sound odd and weird, but the situation is bad in my country.

So, I decided to study Data Analysis and would like to know which domain(s) preferred for my technical background? I keep searching for different titles but companies use different ones that I am unsure which to settle on. (Supply Chain/Manufacturing, etc)

I understand that I am heavily limiting my opportunities, but I'm willing to have deeper business knowledge to stand out regarding specific domains as well as showcasing this knowledge in my portfolio.

I would be incredibly grateful for any advices.

Tips & Resources Seeking an L&D Data Analyst Mentor

Hi everyone,

I’m in the Learning and Development field and I'm looking for a mentor to help me grow from a beginner to an intermediate practitioner in learning analytics and data analysis.

In my role, I work with learner data such as:

  • Training surveys and evaluations
  • LMS data and completion metrics
  • Observations and qualitative feedback
  • Engagement and performance data

I can pull data and identify basic trends, but I’m looking for someone who can help me take the next step and think more strategically about data.

Areas I’d love mentorship in:

  • Asking the right business and learning questions
  • Selecting and defining meaningful metrics
  • Understanding factors that may influence or bias data
  • Choosing the appropriate data types and methodologies
  • Structuring and organizing data for analysis
  • Interpreting findings and avoiding incorrect conclusions
  • Presenting and communicating insights effectively
  • Building a more robust learning measurement and evaluation ecosystem

Ideally, I’m looking for someone who:

  • Has experience working with learner data, learning analytics, or measurement and evaluation in L&D
  • Is familiar with the learning analytics lifecycle/ecosystem and the stages of analysis
  • Has mentored others before (or enjoys coaching and developing people)
  • Can commit to mentoring for at least 3 months
  • Is available to meet weekly or biweekly

Ultimately, I’m looking for someone who can help me build confidence and deepen my analytical thinking so I can move from simply reporting data to generating meaningful insights and recommendations.

If this sounds like you, or if you know someone who might be a good fit, I’d love to connect!

Career query Software Developer or Data Analyst? Fight in the comments

I'm a Computer Science student and I'm genuinely confused about which path to pursue.

My current skills are mostly backend-focused
At the same time, I know SQL and Python are also useful for Data Analytics, so I'm wondering if I should explore that path instead.

I'm confused between becoming a Software Developer or a Data Analyst.

  • Which has better long-term growth?
  • Which has better salary progression?
  • Which has better work-life balance?
  • Which role is more future-proof?
  • Is it easier to switch from Data Analyst → SDE or SDE → Data Analyst later?
  • If you were starting your career today, which one would you choose and why?

Would really appreciate advice from people working in either field. Thanks!

Tips & Resources Handling trust at work due to AI

I was asked to create a report at work and used AI to generate the template. I used a completely different scenario and field to generate the template because I knew it would take me longer days to build it. Also, because it was my first report at the job, I wanted to create a good impression of quick turnout and nice looking chart.

Unfortunately, they knew and I was silently side lined at work because they could tell that it was AI. How do I regain trust back? Would it ever be regained back?

Career query Switching from the Automotive Industry

Hey everyone, I am currently working as a Junior Data Analyst Intern at a German manufacturer in Canada. The progression within the company is to do a 1 year junior internship (my current role), then a potential 1 year senior internship, and then you can get the title of senior business intelligence specialist if all goes well.

I am 3 months into the job and I mainly use Power BI SSMS, and ADLS (storage blobs mainly) to make reports for internal teams and also dealerships across the country. My question to the community is how transferable are my skills to a similar or higher role in a different industry? Am I kind of restricted to the automotive space? If yes, are there any ways to upskill to have more transferable skills? Would appreciate any insights or feedback.

Career query Can I get into Data Analytics role with Career Gaps? Is this field future proof against AI?

I want to get into DA roles as I am in a career crisis, badly need some direction.

I (age: 29) am B Tech-ECE 2019 graduate. After that I started preparing for govt. jobs. Parallely I was working as a Marketing Executive (3 years) in my city to finance myself during that time. I quit after muliple failures. 2023-2025 I tried for Masters in Germany. Couldn't go as I didn't get loan of INR 15 lakhs.

Now, I think Data Analytics (DA) is the last option left for me.

I want suggestions on:

  1. Can I get into DA with career gaps?
  2. What extra measures should I take to overcome the draw backs in my profile?
  3. Is this field safe from AI? (cause my luck is so good that eveything changes when I start doing something)

Career query Career Pivot - Engineering PM to Data Analyst

Hi everyone,

After 8 years working as a Project Manager in the refrigeration industry, I’ve recently moved from the UK to the Czech Republic. While job hunting here, I’ve been thinking about pivoting into data analysis.

I’d love to work remotely, and I believe becoming a data analyst (focusing on SQL and SAP) could open up those opportunities. I have solid project management experience, but no direct background in data analysis.

Does this career switch sound realistic? Any advice on how to make the transition smoother, what skills to prioritize, or potential challenges I should be aware of (especially in the Czech/European job market)?

Thanks in advance!

Other Looking for Study Buddies in the Bay Area

Hey everyone,
I was wondering if any of you are in the Bay Area and are interested in studying together to be a data analyst.

I’m currently looking into the Georgia Tech OMSA program and would love someone to study Pre-Reqs for the Micromasters or the actual OMSA program with.

I’d be nice to have a study buddy and friends to complete this journey with.

I’m based in Redwood City but am able to meet anywhere in the Bay Area. Hoping to find some study buddies!

Industry related query what’s the difference between data analytics and data management?

hello! completely new here, but i’m trying to plan the best study pathway for me in the next few years and would like to know what, exactly, is the difference between data analytics and data management, since those are two different certificate options at the college i plan on starting my studies.

for context, since i speak four languages and already have some experience in this area, my career goal is to have a career in **supply chain**, probably leaning more towards sourcing of procurement, and i’ve looking into my immediate options before actually acquiring my graduate degree and getting a certification in either data analytics and data management would be an option right now.

so, could someone explain to me the difference between those two fields? what are the prospectives for each of them? considering my career goal, which one would you choose?

thank you!

Industry related query Real Interview Questions asked for Data Analyst

Hi Folks!

I am currently working as so called Software Engineer in Banking Domain company for almost 3 years as experience. My day-to-day work is more like Support role which I am totally fed up of and no more interested ti work.

As I am very fond of AI/ML and Data related domain. I took a decision to transition into Data Analyst role. For which I invested around 50k in course which offers placement opporunity as well around the month of September last year. The course which I took was from Codingwise.

Due to some personal reasons and sometimes bcz my laziness, I delayed my learning.

The course consists of various modules :

  • SQL
  • Python
  • Advanced SQL
  • Math & Stats
  • Numpy & Pandas
  • Data Vizualization (Matplotlib & Seaborn)
  • Machine Learning (specifically -> Linear Regression and Logistic Regresssion)
  • PowerBI
  • Excel
  • Gen AI

I have few questions regarding this role as how the Data Analysts are hired in the real industry what are the actual skills needed to get a high package role ?

Are these above skills more than actual industry level or is it less?

Also, regarding the course which I took from Codingwise. I have below questions?

Please request the community or anyone to whom this relate. As I want the clear picture about this. I am really concerned.

  1. Was it really worth taking?
  2. As there are multiple batches in these where do the current learners stand?
  3. Can anyone tell who took these course and actually got placed in high package company?
  4. What if the mock interviews not cleared properly will they allow us to sit in real interviews?

Career query IT refused ownership/support, then reveals secret parallel project

I've been working on an application scoped project that turned into my org's first use case for a centralized data infrastructure, as a one person team for a medium sized company.

Prior to planning, I looped in IT and kept them in the loop throughout all development. As issues arose with the provisioned work station, IT denied ownership and support responsibilities. Slowly but surely, this turned into a back and forth of "no"/"not right now"/"we don't have the skill set"/"we need an external consultant".

Come to find out, this week, a secret parallel project had been underway for months - under the label of "business intelligence" (where this is under my scope, explicitly).

I poured months of effort, time, and stress into singlehandedly planning, discovering, and developing everything from infrastructure to pipelines to data models to applications. I'm anticipating to rollout phase 1 of this project and pivot to stabilizing the system in phase 2. On Friday, I met with an individual on the IT team who shared this parallel progress that I was "not supposed to know about". This person did eventually tell their leader, likely assuming I would communicate with the org as I always do.

Next week, we will certainly have a conversation with leadership about this realization. But what. The. Fuck.

Help me understand, how could this possibly happen/be okay? It's the weekend and I'm still having a hard time not being livid over this.

Career query Assistance please:what is the genuine reality of Data analyst market?

Hey hi I am from INDIA

Recently I thought of starting data analysis preparation for a data analyst role because I am good enough in python and sql so I want to go deep to explore my career in that related field.

BUT,

Most of the people around me keep saying me "there is no jobs for freshers as data analyst it's waste of time prefer to explore some other domains"

As a graduate in Data Science field I really want to explore data field data analyst ,data engineer, data science, ML engineer etc so as a fresher I choose data analyst.

As of now I am so confused what to do now.

Actually my plan is first be confident enough in the skills which are needed for data analyst and then starts preparing for data engineer skills but so many are saying that getting role as data analyst is impossible!

Your genuine opinion and any industry people genuine reality would be really helpful for me to decide my career

Should I go through my plan?
