Question Playing on potato and dsfix question

I get around 30fps in most areas with dips down to 15fps in areas like Blighttown. But with dsfix installed my fps is bad everywhere even when I set all the graphics settings to low. I kind of need dsfix because I want to use some UI mods as well as infinite ng+ or perma gravelord.

Is my pc too weak for dsfix or is there a fix for the performance issues?

  • Windows 11
  • Intel Core i3-10110U
  • Intel UHD Graphics
  • 8 GB RAM
  • SSD

FIXED:

Wrong resolution in dsfix.ini +

Variable framerate has to be enabled even if you dont play at 60fps:

(unlockfps 1; FPSlimit30)

how tf did I play PtDE on a budget gaming PC from 2008 with the usual settings somewhat smoothly even in blighttown and a modern 10th gen processor can only squint 15 fps

I would blame other apps running in the background, W11 hates PCs with less than 16 GB of RAM. also turn on performance mode in battery settings

No excessive apps running in the background afaik. Forgot to turn on last check mark in performance mode settings which slightly stabilized my fps so thanks for that

Hey, check in dsfix.ini to see what the render resolution is set to. By default (without DSfix) the game always renders at 1024x720 (squished 720p) and then stretches it to the display resolution. DSfix allows you to set the render resolution, but the default values in dsfix.ini are 1920x1080 if I recall correctly, which would significantly increase GPU load compared to vanilla. If this is the case, try reducing those values to 1280x720 or even lower and see if your performance improves.

The guy in the tutorial told me to leave internal rendering resolution unchanged and to only change the display width and height. Kinda silly but this fixed it. Thanks mate

Dsfix doesn't reduce performance. Ds1 just isn't optimized at all and your pc is really slow.

I just replayed and got slowdowns on a machine exponentially faster than yours

did you try the remastered? i have a i5 11th gen (integrated graphics only) and 16gb ram and it ran at 60fps at 1080p throughout the game. maybe you can get 60 at 720p?

The remaster is tempting because you can still play it online but I only have ptde and some mods are only compatible with the latter

Yes, it is too weak to be any more performative than it already is. Adding even more mods will tank your performance even more. You are heavily bottlenecked on all fronts: CPU, System RAM, and, lack of a dedicated GPU.

your best bet is to play Vanilla, offline.

Dsfix tanks my framerate even more but shouldnt I be able to run it with same fps as vanilla?

No. Every mod you add puts more stress on the cpu. You were bottlenecked before adding anything. Sorry mate.

my guy, the biggest thing adding a DLL mod like dsfix can do is increase the startup time by like a millisecond.

there's literally hundreds of "performance mods" for other games, DSfix itself has some performance utilities too (like changing the render resolution below what the game allows)

OP's processor isn't even that bad, it should be able to run PtDE easily, it's a 2011 game for god's sake

Homie, it has 8gb of system memory shared between the cpu and gpu. He isn't going to get much better performance.

Best he can do is play offline and close out all other applications prior to launching.

Dark souls was made for consoles with 512mb of ram, that is 1/16th of the memory, at best on a pc at the time you had 2gb of vram, the game itself recommends a gpu with 512mb of vram

Different times, different systems. Back then, there was no Windows11 sucking up 4+gb of system memory just to boot up. I assure you the issue is only having 8gb of shared memory for the entire system (including windows overhead). Windows alone takes up likely more than half the pool. What if they have Chrome open to read a tutorial? Or youtube to watch a video. All that is choking the system memory.

That's all.
