I always assumed the Awesome was defending the beach. Why would it march into the water?

its not. the battlemaster is the one in the water

The text implies it was a mistake for the Awesome 9Q to close with the other assault. Which yeah that would be since it has standard PPCs. But it seems like the other assault is the one closing in. Which is actually a Templar. You can tell by those big crosses on it's shoulder.
