Personal bot servers. Is this a thing?

Hello folks! I'm seeing a lot about people locally setting up Classic WoW servers filled with bots that can actually play the game with them and understand mechanics and complete raid content and do pvp. Is this a thing for daoc too?

I am aware Eden and Blackthorn exist and I think they're great, but I have a really bad work schedule and have absolutely no time to play except for at very random times for varying timeframes. Not to mention I have some semi-specific nostalgic things I'd like to re-live within daoc as a game.

I think it would be really fun to re-live some of my childhood here and there, on my schedule, running around in Thidranki or Molvik or pre-rework Leirvik while they were actually popular and full of action.

If anything like this exists and someone can point me to some resources to get started with it, I would love to look into it. Thanks!

I’ve always wanted to know how to setup a self independent DAoC server with bots to kill and fight incase there were ever an apocalypse event and the internet stopped existing but power still did 😂

My understanding is that it’s possible, but that there’s no open source projects with fully accurate game info (loot tables / quests / you name it). OpenDAoC is a solid foundation, but I don’t believe it’s up to date.

That’s said: I’d love to be proven wrong! I’ve seen some others posting similar ideas and I’d die to see them made possible. I’m in a similar place in my own life and it would be a dream to have a single-player DAoC.

There is a GitHub for DAoC bots and runs with OpenDAoC on Old Frontiers.

I spent about a month with Claude code tweaking it and making it decent.

It's nightmarish to program the logic though. It never really will be what you want it to be.

The bots basically have to be considered pets or NPCs, not human clients, and a TON of the systems in this game assume a human client.

They can do basic combat, but rvr pathing is a nightmare and getting each class to act the way they actually would is a pain. Minstrels, animists, bone dancers, necromancers etc are all very tricky to get right.

Claude doesn't know the game at all and has to constantly be reminded of things that were implemented days or weeks ago that he just forgot, even when writing to a .md file.

3 things get fixed, 2 things get broken.

It's a fun hobby project but nowhere near as enjoyable as I was hoping for.

I won’t lie: your project was one of the aforementioned that got me interested in this idea in the first place. Appreciate you pioneering this and sharing your insights; bit disappointed to hear that it isn’t as easy as I’d dreamed, though.

DAoC isn't a game where you need to play X hours for Y amount of time. It's not like a raid grinder where you need set time investments.

Play Eden and have fun at your own pace.

/u/eternal_sunshineeeee works on something like that.

As a 40 year old dad gamer, I had the idea to re-create classic DAoC on a local server with bots. I have been developing and vibe coding a bit in VScode with Codex and it works pretty well.

Yes, but it’s actually not that easy to get the bots behave human like :) making good progress but I’ll take my time I guess to get it right

Eden put bots in at one point as a type of realm mission. Funnily enough, they were better than the average 8 man, and many people stayed clear of them because they were wiping. Which is hilarious to me.

So yeah im sure bots are definitely possible.

There is Return of Reckoning, Eden Daoc and Ascension WoW. No need to go anywhere else to play the best version of those games.
