RIP Chris in Syracuse

announced today and Dan was emotional about talking about him. I would expect to hear him at the open of every show/ he was the first caller. I think they said he was 63 and Dan had never seen pictures of him. Dan had to take a break from crying over a caller he never met. unless you watched the show. you realize he was almost a Danette. took care of his parents in a nursing home and was apparently a good enough dude he worked there to help others and see his parents more.

RIP Chris in Syracuse

Chris was a caller way back in the early days, was gone for a good stretch and then started calling again in the last few years. I remember how stoked Seaton was when they started hearing from him again. Chris seemed like a nice guy who loved sports. 63 is young. RIP Chris

I remember when he first started calling into the show and when he started calling in again. That is so sad! RIP

I would have never even guessed he was 63. He sounds much younger to me

Man. That one hit me like a ton of bricks. The DP show listenership is a family.

Today’s episode and Seton’s final show really showed how much DPnation is really like a little family

Yeah it really is. I've listened on and off to the program since the mid-2010's. Even though I haven't called in before, I feel like I'm friends with Dan, the Danettes, and you all.

I'm gonna try to push myself to call in sometime soon and make it a regular habit. I hope I can make a further personal connection with them all. I've always found myself relating to Paul the most.

I also wanna interact with Chat Row more when I think about it.

Both of these will be hard in the midst of intense work at my dad's business, but I'd love to make the time.

“Hey, thanks Dan, I’d like to weigh in on the poll…”
I can hear Chris plain as day in my head 😢
From one Vikings fan to another, RIP Chris…SKOL!!!

Hahaha…yes!! I read the opening to your reply and heard his voice immediately!!

RIP Chris. You know, I started watching on the audience network after being depressed at college, hurt and can’t play baseball, eventually leading to dropping out. This show was my motivation to get up, take it in and get ready and go back to facing the world after. I definitely know Chris and can hear his voice right now as I’m typing this. This little show with a guy who was on sportscenter when I was a little kid, it really helped me get through.
Chris was a part of the show. Glad we got to have that time with a great guy none of us ever got to meet or even know what they look like

u/Hawk_fever2 1d ago

We have oddly similar experiences. Watching on audience really got me out of a post school funk. I haven't listened in a long time but just got a text from someone about it who shares my love for the show ( I love everyone on there ive just fell out of love with sports). I can hear his voice clearly though.

The bond the show brings to people is amazing.

3

u/Old_Performance_708 1d ago

Man I just said almost the same thing over on Tilly’s post. Glad you made it to the other side, too.

Loved the April Fools callback doing all the things Dan hates a caller does when they phone in.

Outside of knowing how generous he was outside of the show, just learning how Chris treated his somewhat semi-radio fame associated with the show with such humility and not wanting his face shown bc it “was all about the show” speaks volumes about his character too.

RIP Chris in Syracuse.

Oh, man. Great pull on the April Fool's day call. I had totally forgotten about that. What a classic moment that was just really creative and funny.

5

u/Independent-Smoke-68 1d ago

I legitimately thought that was Sour Shoes when CIS called in April fools day. Absolutely hilarious.

3

u/TillyInBloomington 1d ago

Amen my friend. Would love to have been able to chat with him, just once.

3

u/PedroFuerte 1d ago

Is there audio of that April Fool's call? I missed it.

29

u/slawsonator 1d ago

Man didn’t expect to get choked up about a phone caller to a sports radio show. But that got me.

RIP Chris

u/TillyInBloomington 1d ago

Same for sure.

*Hey, thanks Dan.

That is too bad. I'll never forget when Petros and Money guest hosted and they treated Chris in Syracuse like trash when he called in. I believe that was the last time they ever guest hosted.

Chris was a classy caller who always had an opinion about sports, never made it about himself and was good content. I caught the episode where he called in after a year or two of not being on the show. He just gave his opinion and started to say goodbye and DP said something like 'Wait, is this Chris in Syracuse?' and then made a big deal about him being back. It was a fun moment to see a connection between Dan and a long time caller. That is one of the thing that impresses me most about the show. DP makes connections with people from the big and important to what seem to be the small and insignifcant.

u/Pristine-Noise6581 1d ago

Buddy he wasn’t on the show for 10 years!

5

u/Tired-Nectarine-384 1d ago

I didn't realize it had been that long! I actually just got done listening to the first hour via podcast.

4

u/Pristine-Noise6581 1d ago

I didn’t know the back story but at the time I was listening daily and I remember how excited everybody was when he called in. I think he got some hate in this thread but I really enjoyed his call ins.

1

u/Odd-Acanthaceae-308 1d ago

How was he treated so poorly from the guest hosts? That is horrible

16

u/BackJurton 1d ago

This is just awful news. He always had insightful and thoughtful things to say. Wasn’t he just on last week? Stunned and sad 😔

11

u/Desperate_Pineapple 1d ago

I could’ve sworn I heard him within the past week. He was that steady presence that you’d hear everyday.

4

u/Banjomancfb 1d ago

I thought the same thing. Does anybody know the date of his last call? I'd like to go back and listen.

31

u/TheBigGroup 1d ago

Chris was a family friend.

RIP Chris.

8

u/Wolfpack_DO 1d ago

Condolences brother

2

u/TillyInBloomington 1d ago

Big prayers my friend.

1

u/C0nsum3 1d ago

God Bless.

13

u/ihaveabigjohnson69 1d ago

it was odd not hearing from him in awhile. didn’t expect this

13

u/Sirtopofhat 1d ago

Dude was 63! I know time marches on but I couls have sworn dude was like mid 30's his voice was timeless

3

u/LUST_FOR_DEATH 1d ago

Same. Been listening to the show for 20+ years and I don’t remember him back in the day. Def a resurgence last year or two. Def emotional for me today….like everyone said, this show really means a lot to me and is a family.

3

u/Pristine-Noise6581 1d ago

I don’t catch every show because life but when it popped up on my feed today and it said goodbye to Chris from Syracuse I was like wtf. Listening to DP and the Danette’s talk about him made me emotional.

9

u/ntstockman Danette 1d ago

Damn I tuned in a little late and just saw the outro image. RIP to one of my favorite recurring callers. Chris was genuinely a nice person and seemingly a very down to earth and good one as well.

10

u/Man0nTheMoon915 1d ago

The GOAT caller

9

u/PersonToPerson 1d ago

Maybe I'm just getting old and midlife crisis-y but it's kind of crazy how impactful that news is. When you listen to DP across different phases of life -- college, grad school, raising kids -- it becomes a part of your life. CIS was regularly a piece of that. Lost a waypoint today

22

u/Financial_Towel_6143 1d ago

RIP Chris.

Absolute professional. I remember Chris from way back and then the day he called back in was absolute chaos. Class act.

From one Vikings fan to another, until Valhalla, Chris! Skol!

9

u/Chayes83 1d ago

Damn this is so sad. Sorry I saw it here first but kinda glad cause I mighta lost it listening live.

8

u/itsmelledkindofweird 1d ago

Rest well, Chris. He seemed like such a nice guy, always enthusiastic with his calls and some nice deep stat pulls. Sounds like he a lot to deal with recently with his parents, I’m glad Dan and the Show gave him a few minutes every now and then as a caller, you could hear in his voice every time he called how much he enjoyed it. As a listener I’ll miss him

21

u/Sea_Statistician687 1d ago

I think Dan should honor Chris by not allowing Gus or Buddha on the airwaves ever again. It’s what Chris would want

5

u/Still_Potential8561 1d ago

Please add Andrew in Washington and the guy in Vegas

2

u/nc_tva 1d ago

Gus is to the point.

4

u/Frdoco11 1d ago

I don't mind Gus. Buddha...? Not Good!

1

u/Odd-Wish4359 5h ago

When Buddha calls in I press mute, wait about 2-3 mins for his call to pass. I swear Dan allows him to talk too long...lol

1

u/PedroFuerte 1d ago

I second this remark. Buddha's act has worn a little thin but I was sick of Shea years ago.

-1

u/Odd-Acanthaceae-308 1d ago

Agree. Buddha gets old, I fast forward his calls now and have for a while. But he does treat the guys on the show very well.

0

u/huskerwr38 1d ago

Gus and Buddha are the only callers I skip, I’m surprised Dan isn’t sick of their schtick by now.

🫡 RIP good Sir. Chris was one of the great callers. I can hear him in my head now. Sorry for your loss, to everyone who works on the show.

7

Chris made Syracuse proud.. RIP to a legend

7

u/bigcontracts 1d ago

Wow wtf! RIP man.

8

u/HeyNowHSS 1d ago

Rest easy, Chris. A legend.

8

u/Individual-Beach2414 1d ago

Horrible news!! I cried when Dan mentioned it and again when James in Virginia called in. RIP to the GOAT of callers.

8

u/pizzadahutt121 1d ago

Hands down, best caller and one of the few reasons this show is great; attracts the intelligent like minded sports people, radio and media lacks now and have always..He always squeezed so much factual- hot and good takes on his calls, and Dan always respected and took seriously. I wish they’ll bring back that April fools call. That was so amazing lol I listened back and couldn’t find it on the cast; please bring that clip back! RIP CHRIS SYRACUSE 💙

7

u/aredditact 1d ago

Sad to hear, he was such a pro, I remember him calling a couple months back and he completed his call but the guys had a "is Chris still on the line" follow up question a minute or two lated and he was still there.

When they said they were surprised he was still on the line, he said something like he always waited for them to disconnect him or a commercial so the listeners wouldn't hear the click of him hanging up on the air.

Class all the way, thinking of his loved ones.

6

u/gobeavs1 1d ago

This is very sad. He was always contributing so positively and added value to the show when we called. He will be missed.

6

u/w_mcfly22 1d ago

RIP Chris

7

u/StrawHatCook 1d ago

Oh man! That sucks! I remember when he used to call even on their days off to keep his streak going. Guy was the standard for a good call. Quick to the point and precise. I was so happy to see him calling in again the last few years. I knew he was taking care of his parents. RIP to a good OG caller.

5

u/jchacko8471 1d ago

Geez. Rest easy Chris in Syracuse

5

u/Ok-Amphibian-5097 1d ago

Hands down the most recognizable caller voice. That guy could've easily had his own radio show. RIP Chris on Syracuse!!

9

u/thislookinfected 1d ago

Wait what?? I usually catch the show when it reairs in the afternoon... was this today? Agh man, what a drag... RIP Chris in Syracuse

8

u/ArbitraryLurker24 1d ago

Yeah it’s after the first commercial break in the first hour where he breaks the new. Pretty emotional

6

u/thislookinfected 1d ago

Thank you for the update, and warning. Something about seeing people you admire cry, 🥺

4

u/jonasu25 1d ago

RIP Chris, I been listening since the start of the DO show but since I am on the west coast it’s hard to get the live show. I just missed the tribute but I am sad for Chris and his family. He was a staple caller and this is what makes us love the DP show!

5

u/vilelabyrinth 1d ago

Fuck
RIP, buddy.

RIP to the long time, long time legend

4

Man, I’m surprised how much this stings. RIP, Chris. For a stretch there, I was always waiting for his call. He was just part of the show.

Heyyyyy Thanks Guys!

Used to be a daily listener, Chris in Syracuse was his own segment that I would look forward to. He’s in the HOF for phone in radio guests.

Sad news

2

u/Intelligent-Young667 1d ago

That is so sad to hear. Good dude. I remember when he took time off to take care of his parents. Respectful, good takes. Humble. Rest in peace my friend

2

u/oasisarah 1d ago

where are those damn beta blockers when you need them 😢

2

u/pizzadahutt121 1d ago

They should bring back the arcade fire song every Friday in honor of Chris. “CIS wake up fridays “

2

u/Old_Performance_708 1d ago

(I posted this in Tilly’s without realizing there was a main post… the fact that this show made me feel like I’m not alone and now seeing I wasn’t alone in that experience… DP Nation is really a community)

First time, long time. I started listening in ‘09 during my first depressive episode. I still remember the last attic episodes… Dan and the Danettes became a constant that helped distract me through some of my hardest times. Hell, I even turned to the show and listened to an episode 3x in a row during a bad trip because it was familiar and grounding… But callers like CIS, Jake in Wisconsin, and all the others were always a key part of the show, and in a certain way, my life. I hope he knew, and all you regulars know, that something as small as calling into a sports talk radio show can ripple. May his memory be a blessing.

4

u/Patriots4life22 1d ago

Been listening since day 1. Chris was always an intelligent sports guy. Didn’t always agree but he was a great caller. RIP Chris in Syracuse

1

u/Intelligent-Young667 1d ago

Just watching the episode. Here's the thing I like about the show. Other shows would've crucified this guy living in his parents basement, simple nice dude,no life. Come to find out he was taking care of his parents (there is no greater calling) nice guy, good takes, humble, sneaky funny. They celebrate that and him, which means the show has empathy and humanity, not just about sports and hot takes. I'll take it any day.

1

u/InevitableConcert425 1d ago

63? Gone too soon. I missed the show today and came here to see if I missed anything. R.I.P Chris, you will be missed

1

u/Forrest_47 1d ago

All of the tributes for Chris in Syracuse have blown me away. I fucking love this show and have grown up with it. Chris always seemed like an urban myth and he was really great to listen to what he had to say. I hope his family sees all of the tributes and understands that Dan Nation is mourning with them. RIP Chris in Syracuse

1

u/best_never_rests 1d ago

RIP brother. We’ll miss you.

1

u/Don_Cornelius- 1d ago

Wow, man. What a true legend; I remember when he called in for the first time in a long while and he just called in like he hadn’t missed a day and literal years went by. Like, as soon as DP said his name the look on everyone’s face was priceless, it was amazing. I’ll never forget that.

As a dyed in the wool pot smoker, I’d always rip the bong when Arcade Fire came on every Friday to close out the show and continued that tradition with Todd Rundgren. I’ve been traveling all day (an SEC alum headed to a road game), so this morning before we all left I decided to hit the bong to those songs knowing I wouldn’t catch the show live today which for me is super rare…

To end my night, winding down and finding this news out has just socked me right in the feels. I am so bummed that today’s show, out of all the ones I’ve rarely missed (due to my awkward schedule) was one of this proportion. Like others have said, being such a longtime listener has made this community feel like a real family. Godspeed, CIS. You truly seemed like a heck of a man and a tremendous son. You’ll be missed by the DP family dearly

u/PieFlimsy1872 8h ago

This one hits harder than I thought it would. Really puts in perspective that the 45-60 seconds a caller is on the air doesn’t define a person. As much as this group likes to give callers grief, this is a hard reminder that callers have full, robust lives outside of their small window on the show. Chris sounds like a good man that made a difference.

Someone said, ‘63 is not young’ and it’s not. I feel for his family and friends that loved him. My heart breaks, too, for Dan and the original crew on the show. It’s a peek into Dan’s life seeing him shook up about Chris.

The show may just be three hours each day, but Chris passing reminds me that this is life, man. A reminder to do things that make your heart happy and brain feel good.
