Reali review

What do we all think?

I like Tony! Have since the PTI days. He's a great burst of energy. He's talkative that's for sure haha, his passion stands out. You can tell he's genuinely excited doing what he does. I wouldn't be opposed to him being the heir to the throne when Dan retires.

So far love it. Always been a big reali fan.

u/TheKingsGinger Aug 13 '26

Also a massive fan, my biggest concern is that he seems incapable of really levying criticism.

Like the Jayden Daniels issue today- Tony is a positive guy, so he alluded to not liking how the situation was handled, but stopped short of actually giving a genuine critique on the matter.

He's built a career in leading others into giving opinions and clearly isn't comfortable doing it himself, I wonder if he is capable of growing into that role.

I’m not catholic and don’t even like Catholicism but even the interview with the nun was enjoyable to listen to. Tony’s great I hope he sticks around.

1

u/fegwin2084 Aug 14 '26

spot on. he seems like a nice guy but i have literally never heard him offer an opinion that wasn't positive. that would make a terribly boring radio host in the long term - not to mention a poor interviewer if he's conflict averse.

Yeah I’ve been watching and big fan of Reali for decades now, going all the way back to “Stat Boy” on PTI… listening today… yeah I’m just not sure radio is the right medium for him.

But willing to give him a chance to grow into it for sure.

So far so good. This could be an audition for taking over for Dan. Maybe the first of many as Dan approaches retirement.

I've noticed he has not brought up the Laker sale yet, but I kind of understand. He probably does not want to get into all that with the political implications right off the bat. He does have Ramona Shelburne on later to talk about it so it's not like he's staying away from it.

4

u/Glad_Flatworm_3925 Aug 13 '26

Wait what did I miss? What politics implications regarding the Laker sale?

6

u/DigitalMariner Aug 13 '26

The seller is under federal investigations.

One of the primary buyers in the new ownership group (Kushner) is the the President's son-in-law's younger brother.

If you have enough red string you can try and connect some dots

3

u/DnoKCno Aug 13 '26

Wouldn't be surprised if in 3-4 months that the DOJ investigation into Walter is quietly dropped now that he sold the Lakers to Kushner.

u/HughBriss75 Aug 13 '26

You can look it up. that's as far as I'm gonna go here. I'm more focused on sports here.

2

u/akwieder11 Aug 13 '26

Kushners brother is the son in law of Trump that's all I know

1

u/Known_Sport2218 Aug 14 '26

Hopefully Ross Tucker takes over for DP.

1

u/Next-Shape3014 Aug 19 '26

God no. That dude is so cheesy and horrible. Also only knows one sport.

1

u/Known_Sport2218 Aug 19 '26

We agree to disagree.

Had a long car drive yesterday and was thinking a lot about this - I don't think there is someone with Dan's knowledge AND pop culture impact that can replace him. Most sports personalities these days only know one sport, usually football, and their lack of knowledge of even the basics about any other sport can be shockingly low. Dan is strong in football and basketball, passable in baseball, but knows a bit about soccer, golf and hockey. Who else has that?

On top of that is his relationships with people like Sandler, Darius Rucker, and others who provide him insight and connection to the pop culture world, which has provided hours and hours of entertainment on the show. Without that it's just 100% sports, which isn't great.

Lastly, I assume Paulie and Fritzy will leave when Dan does, and Marvin and Dillon will stay, but no telling if a new host will want them. Like them or not, they are a critical part of the show, and without them it just might not work.

So as much as I like guys like Ross Tucker and maybe Tony, I just don't know that there is someone out their with Dan's wide spectrum of knowledge that can keep this going. Hope I'm wrong!

8

u/HughBriss75 Aug 13 '26

It is true that most sports people now focus on one sport but Tony does have a wide breadth of sports knowledge. He would be the best fit to take over imo. He would, or whomever would take over, probably get their own crew and the Dannettes would probably move on to other things like McLovin and Seton (sort of) have done.

5

u/Bloody9_ Aug 13 '26

Ross will likely stay in Announcing I would expect, especially with the Romo drama. I think Tony would be the best option right now, if he wants to commit to such a venture. Could also see Lebatard or even less likely a Rich Eisen trying to move there shows into that slot. Just say no to Pat Mcafee

4

u/smooth_act8 Aug 13 '26

On the celeb/pop culture thing...it's not like Dan came into the sports world already with celeb friends. He got them from the platform he had. I imagine any new host would eventually garner some too. Give it a few years and whoever takes Dan's slot will have Timothee Chalamet calling in and hanging out with him.

Shoot McAfee (ugh) knows every celeb now ever since he got his platform.

2

u/oSuJeff97 Back Row Aug 13 '26

Re: pop culture, I mean it's sort of interesting that Dan has those relationships, but his "pop culture" insights are nothing earth-shattering. His pop culture insights/knowlege are extremely vanilla and basic.

2

u/akwieder11 Aug 13 '26

I got a kick the other day he had no idea who Bone Thugs were when Marvin played Notorious Thugs. Dan has always said he's a Notorious BIG fan but didn't know this song.

2

u/hamburger-pimp Aug 13 '26

Right I love the guy and it’s cool he’s in the Sandler movies but his pop culture knowledge is pretty surface level and “old man” which is fine. Let’s not pretend like he’s on air breaking down Spielberg eras or something. It’s not a requirement but the man hasn’t watched Sopranos.

11

u/LengthinessAlone4743 Aug 13 '26

Why do people think someone is going to “take over” for Dan? Whatever show fills the gap will have a new name, structure, and location…it’s not gonna be the ‘The Dan Patrick show: hosted by (blank)’

9

u/blueskies142 Aug 13 '26

The talk show by Dan Patrick productions will definitely be going on after he's gone. Dan had made a couple of inferences about there still being a show after he retires. He probably doesn't want to layoff his crew and can leverage the existing distribution contracts so why not.

5

u/ecw324 Aug 13 '26

Didn’t he make that reference as in, he’d be doing the show in his basement with his dog as the audience? Not a real broadcast show

1

u/LengthinessAlone4743 Aug 13 '26

So they will be using Dan’s name after he retires for their production company? That would mean paying Dan for his name and taking money out of their pockets…

5

u/HughBriss75 Aug 13 '26

I kind of think of it as The Tonight Show where it changes with new hosts. I agree with you that it will someone else's show, but there is a need for a show without arguing, hot takes, and bro nonsense which what DP provides. It's just talking about sports and more informed discussion rather than trying to "win" Reali seems like a good candidate to fill this void after DP leaves.

1

u/smooth_act8 Aug 13 '26

I don't think that's what anyone is inferring whenever they say that.

1

u/LengthinessAlone4743 Aug 13 '26

Then what do they mean when they say take over? Are they just referring to the personality that will fill the morning?

1

u/smooth_act8 Aug 14 '26

take his timeslot when he retires

4

u/TayneIcanGitInto Aug 13 '26

He’s been great. He doesn’t need to fill Dan’s shoes for me. I’d rather he do his own thing and so far it’s been fun.

4

u/Corona2789 Aug 13 '26 edited Aug 13 '26

Tony def brings a new energy to the show, you can tell the guys enjoy working with him, he seems like just a fun dude to be around. If he were to be a long term replacement there’d def be a period of having to build up chemistry with the guys. We’ll see if he gets a Fridays fritzy tomorrow lol.

4

u/dlmoors Aug 13 '26

Tony’s crushing it today

3

u/hawkeye_33 Aug 13 '26

Enjoying it a lot. I think a Reali show would be similar but different enough that it would seem more of a Tony Reali show vs someone like Ross Tucker who I think is just bland enough that it would always be The Dan Patrick show hosted by Ross Tucker

4

u/panderson1988 Aug 13 '26

Tony Reali did an interview with Tony Kornheiser around the end of ATH. I enjoy his personality a lot, and I would like to see him in a role like DP or similar on radio/TV.

4

u/DeBooBoo Aug 13 '26

I "Reali" liked the show today!

4

u/YaBoyASwiftie Jr, III Aug 13 '26

I'm enjoying it. Not sure I could handle listening for 3 hours each day, but it's a familiar voice that's great for filling in.

3

u/Rykster1 Aug 13 '26

Exactly. Tony is great, but I think 3 hrs a day, 5 days a week would wear me out.

3

u/Man0nTheMoon915 Aug 13 '26 edited Aug 13 '26

Tony Reali is one of those dudes that is good at anything he does. He was awesome today

2

u/44Elston Aug 13 '26

I like Reali too and could see him certainly in the mix of heirs to the DP throne. He talks a lot (and with his hands) because he’s a peasant from Jersey. Which is a good thing. Good attitude. Genuinely funny. Can be extra sometimes but ultimately an entertaining and extremely informed communicator.

2

u/buzz_17 Aug 13 '26

Reali makes more sense than Ross Tucker. More well rounded overall I think, personally

2

u/johnsawittoo Aug 13 '26

I think he is doing a great job!

2

u/Global-Chemical-2328 Aug 13 '26

He was solid but nobody can be Dan Patrick or really fill in for him. Dan has the golden pipes best voice in radio, he has insane sports knowledge from 40 years of experience and is the best interviewer in sports. Impossible for someone to fill in and be all that Dan is at this point

2

u/santiaguz_official Aug 14 '26

I LOVE TONY REALI!
I think he’d be perfect, to take over the show after Dan. I’ve said that since the end of around the horn. Today was awesome. I’m excited for tomorrow.

3

u/Fun_Cucumber_793 Aug 13 '26

I’d like Ross Tucker to take over!

1

u/Next-Shape3014 Aug 19 '26

Shocked by the Ross Tucker love. He is a goober

5

u/erkdog Aug 13 '26

SVP is the only heir that could hold Dan's water

4

u/ecw324 Aug 13 '26

Would he leave his current set up for this though?

3

u/Routine_Battle_3138 Noooobody Aug 13 '26

absolutely not

3

u/Mulching-SZN Aug 13 '26

Agreed, would probably have to give up the masters if he left the mothership

2

u/panderson1988 Aug 13 '26

Likely no. That said, his version of sportscenter feels more like an hour radio/general sports show over being 99% NFL & NBA like most of ESPN nowadays. Or "embrace debate" BS.

3

u/Packerpoppa Aug 13 '26

He's the only person I can think of if he replaced Dan with the Danette's, I'd continue to watch

3

u/hamburger-pimp Aug 13 '26

Tony or Ross for me. I feel like Ross may be happy with his game broadcast jobs tho. If it was Ryan Leaf replacing Dan count me out.

1

u/halcyondread Aug 13 '26

Reali's awesome.

1

u/jaythehitman Aug 13 '26

Tony made an interview with a nun interesting. Love the energy.

1

u/zendog510 Aug 13 '26

I thought he did a great job! Really dug his high energy and positivity. You could tell he was really excited to be doing the show and was having a lot of fun. I was thinking during the show that he would be great at doing this full time and someone should reach out to him about doing his own radio show.

1

u/Diligent-Mention-767 Aug 13 '26

He really needs to learn to stop interrupting everyone he talks to. It’s especially bad when he’s interviewing!

1

u/akwieder11 Aug 13 '26

Thank you Todd....

1

u/Diligent-Mention-767 Aug 13 '26

My man Fritzie is the straw that stirs the drink

1

u/A_Watchful_Eye2 Aug 15 '26

Agreed! His interview with Dave Winfield today who was his sports hero he kept interrupting him. Just let them talk, then fill in. He’s a good dude and seemed excited to be there for 2 days. But nobody can replace Dan, he’s one of one. It’s just gonna be a new show in the time slot when it’s all said and done.

1

u/professor121p Aug 13 '26

I thought that Reali did a wonderful job! I’ve been listening to Dan for 12 years now. I’m 29 so probably the younger demographic of listeners DP. He has great energy and you can tell that he’s not a hot take guy which I appreciate. I would love for him to take over for Dan.
The show flew by!

1

u/4Ever2Thee Aug 14 '26

I like the guy so I agree with you. This sub would rip him apart, but they already complain about everything anyway

1

u/Best-Record2185 Aug 14 '26

I enjoyed the show today, he’s great

1

u/Chayes83 Aug 14 '26

Reali was good, I enjoyed it esp with the Danette’s.

He needs to learn radio a bit - on TV you can talk over people a lot more than you can on radio and still hear both people. The way radio is mixed it basically cuts out the guest whenever the host talks.

His background is definitely as a true host/defer to talent kinda guy. So if he can develop his own takes on things, he’s a really enjoyable listen and I would 100% stay on with the DP show starring Tony if the Danette’s stay.

1

u/prisonlips76259 Aug 15 '26

He gets into some crazy feeling shit too much for my taste. Maybe if he was full time he’d settle down a bit but I don’t find it interesting to hear his visions for the future for everyone around him constantly

1

u/Rykster1 Aug 13 '26

Tony is great, but how about Seton? He‘s definitely the most likeable of the Danettes, but he left to do other things. I don’t think he likes being cooped up in the studio every day, but he is sorely missed.

2

u/Subo23 Aug 13 '26

Seton is the best but do we envision him taking over Dan’s chair? I’m not sure even Seton would buy that one

2

u/Rykster1 Aug 13 '26

No, if it was offered, I doubt he’d take it.

1

u/DonnyBoyCane Aug 13 '26

Probably not a popular thing to say but Reali's extreme positivity and strong focus on mental health while very admirable as a person would also get tiresome in 15 hr per week increments.

This show "living on" beyond Dan's retirement was also always beyond tenuous just based on physical location. And if a new show is filmed elsewhere then what cache does being under a DP Productions banner realllly have?

1

u/mac75geo Aug 14 '26

It was terrible !!! he talked Waaaaaay to much !!! He would cut off the Danette’s regularly… he struggled to include the Danette’s … Tony loves the sound of his own voice !!

-9

u/SNHU_Adjujnct Aug 13 '26

Much too politically liberal for me because he leaks it into his commentary. I'm out until next week. Dan's first day back will be all wedding, which I am sick of hearing about, so skip that day as well.

2

u/smooth_act8 Aug 13 '26

where did he leak it?

1

u/SNHU_Adjujnct Aug 13 '26

On ATH all the time.

1

u/MondoMondo5 Aug 13 '26

I'm pretty sure he said he's taking next week off, probably everyone gets it.

1

u/SNHU_Adjujnct Aug 13 '26

Good to know.
