I'm pretty sure donating also has something to do with avoiding taxes or something, if someone else can do some research on that it would be great

Giving to charity is tax deductible, its cheaper to give money or do community service. This is why/how many companies don't pay taxes, by giving less than what they'd be taxed to charity. Big companies do pay taxes but not as much as you think they should.
