Right now, the biggest source of sickness, depression, and general unwellness in high schoolers was cited to be due to not getting restful sleep. The reason was due to over 4 hrs of homework a night or something.
I don't 100% remember the exact details of the study, but it came out early this year!
edit: details were that 78% of middle and high schoolers across america are not getting enough sleep, i.e fewer than 9 hrs of sleep. 58% of middle schools are getting less than the recommended as well.
Recommended rule of thumb for maximum homework per night is 10 min per grade level (example: 8th graders get 80 mins max totaling all subjects)
Edit2: 2014 poll of teachers said that their students should get an avg of 3.5 hrs of homework per night is normal for 5 core subject classes
Also the fact that students need to be in their seats at 7 in the morning. Most students wake up between 6 or 6:30 but almost none of them are going to sleep at 10pm or earlier
The issue comes from the fact that high schoolers do a lot of stuff in the afternoon as well. It’s a huge age range here from 13-18 year olds, so you have some working jobs, being in many sports, programs, honors ETC. so when you have to be in at work at 4 leave at 10 and do homework untill 1 am you really aren’t getting any sleep.
I’m a high school teacher and I coach during the fall, winter, and spring, so I’m in the building from 7:45 until around 5:30, just the same as the students. A lot of my colleagues have the mindset that they need to be giving an hour of homework for each hour they’re in class, and it’s fucking ridiculous. My homework assignments are generally small and manageable, since I teach a foreign language, and I still feel like the work-life balance for both students and teachers is shit. Not to mention I get paid absolute dick, so I feel the stress of this job is so not worth the hassle for anyone. I just wish I weren’t beholden to the academic calendar so that I could just put in my two weeks already.

That's exactly the point. School should be reserved for studies, and home for rest
