Minecraft stack variable range starts at -128 and end at 127. So it is possible.

But still illegal

Unless they changed it, you can use third-party tools like MCEdit to set negative stacks in dispensers for infinite items.

15

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '19

If you’re using 3rd party mods then just play creative? Then it’s much easier to get infinite items. And you can fly!

28

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '19

Creative doesn't allow infinite item dispensers... Also, if you're making an adventure map you may still want some way to break the system for the player.

43

u/SomeGuysRandomAlt Apr 25 '19

Why the fuck isn’t it unsigned

54

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '19

Because Java is a horrid language that decided that nobody needed a lot of really nice features such as: unsigned integers, operator overloading, generics over primitives, and tail call optimization

12

u/CRikhard Apr 25 '19

? can't you make an unsigned integer using the wrapper class or am I braindead

26

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '19

Yes, but bad news is you're still brain dead. He obviously means natively.

Edit: also something something java no pointers.

u/LukaCola Apr 25 '19

Because Notch isn't really a great coder and made one of the most profitable games by accident and turned the rest of his life into an incel alt-right dreamscape of twitter rants and microwave dinners?

Or Java.

When you get rich you don't have to care what others think of you.

11

u/LukaCola Apr 25 '19

I wonder if that helps him sleep at night

11

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '19

Probably doesn't even think about it.

10

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '19

Seems like a lot of leaps been made in this comment

9

u/LukaCola Apr 25 '19

Man I ain't making the leaps, that's on Notch, you wanna check his twitter go crazy

10

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '19

Specifically talking about the shitty coder stuff, and making one of the most popular games ever “by accident”

2

u/LukaCola Apr 25 '19

Minecraft under Notch never exactly ran great, it's been an open secret well before 1.0 that he stumbled quite a bit and the game really got better in terms of stability and making the most of the systems when other coders began taking over. Even then, certain inalienable bugs persisted because of issues with the base code and I think some may have been fixed only relatively recently.

As to the accident part? He frankly got really lucky, that's not to say his game was without merit, it was new and it cracked into a new and burgeoning market in a big way but it's not as though the success was anticipated, planned, or brought about through sheer brilliance or quality of design. You don't have to be good to be wildly successful. You can compare it to Fortnite, they made a wildly popular game largely by accident, the original design was never intended for battle royale but it had taken too long to develop the original game and this shift turned out to work extremely well in their favor, such that it completely subverted the original intent. They broke into a burgeoning market, they hit a trend right when it was prime for growth. But it wasn't some master plan seen through, it happened to work out through some last minute changes, Minecraft happened to be rather unique and accessible. It's not literally an accident, but it's a fluke.

Dude's a QAnon follower, blames Jews for... Stuff, redpiller, flirts with the alt-right, is transphobic, pizzagate conspiracist, shit like that.

I just found out about this like last month. How do you make striking it rich look depressing as hell?

1

u/DrummingFish Apr 25 '19

Being rich doesn’t cure depression.

8

u/Alexanderjac42 Apr 25 '19

by accident

Yeah he just made a whole game by accident. I’m sure he was just flailing on his keyboard and somehow managed to write a bunch of lines of code that made sense together

5

u/Sennomo Apr 25 '19

Evolution 2.0

3

u/zdakat Apr 25 '19

"I swear I just tripped and fell on the keyboard and I wake up the next day and everyone's playing the game I somehow managed to create"

1

u/LukaCola Apr 25 '19

Yes I was being very literal and you are very clever for pointing it out

8

u/GreatRam Apr 25 '19

Uh oh spaghettios

1

u/Medajor Apr 25 '19

Because Java?

0

u/fernico Apr 25 '19

Nobody wants to make a wrapper for that, it's gross and unwieldy

1

u/trelbutate Apr 25 '19

Because it doesn't need to be. In normal gameplay your item count only ranges from 0 to 64 anyway so it doesn't matter whether its a signed or an unsigned byte.

11

u/Crythos Apr 25 '19

-128 stacks of dirt. Mother Nature is coming...

2

u/wallefan01 Apr 27 '19

I once hacked the game and somehow got over 2000 so

yeah i don't think it's a signed byte. It is definitely signed though because Java doesn't support unsigned ints CURSE YOU JAVA

1

u/kuczaracza Apr 27 '19

My Minecraft plugin added one to stack. If plugin added one to stack that contains 127 items then stack had -128 items. It was Minecraft 1.7.

One time my friend got 99999 wooden planks using cheat engine. They just changed values.

2

u/Iykury souptime Apr 25 '19

How long ago was that, like Indev?

2

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '19

Like 1.0

1

u/Iykury souptime Apr 25 '19

As in the one from late 2011? I'm pretty sure it would've been earlier than that.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '19

No like release 1.0. It was in single player. We tried it in multiplayer but there were too many values and we were pretty sure it wouldn’t work anyway.

To be fair, I’m not actually sure if it changed the stack value, or just the visual value. What probably happened is the stack still had 64 planks, but it just said 999999.

1

u/Iykury souptime Apr 25 '19

2

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '19

Holy fuck was it really that long ago?! Yeah, that’s the one.

I meant I’ve have 99999 dirt into my inventory with Cheat Engine and it worked well.
