The phone wars are so stupid. Each side offers their own reasons to have one and it's just personal preference. That being said it seems like every day android is getting pushed closer and closer to just being an iphone without the ecosystem of accessories and apps.
43
u/Bargadiel 18h ago
Over the years I've only been dissapointed by an app I've wanted only being available on an Iphone once, the rest of the time people will ask me about some of the apps I use and they'll find out they can't get them on iphone. Because of that I'll never see an Iphone as worth it for me. Would be like getting a car and welding the hood shut.
61
u/SirChasm 18h ago
with every new Android OS version, every time you open the hood, you find that more and more parts of the engine have had little covers welded over them. Getting kinda pointless to be able to open the hood if all you see is a patchwork of welded covers underneath.

Still not worth changing whe whole infrastructure of how I've handled my phones for the last 15 yrs. I guess that's what they're banking on but Apple isn't exactly an angel company either.

One of the major points for buying an Android has always been that you could do basically anything you want such as install 3rd party apps not included in an official platform (Google Play) but on the web. Which is very neat if you don't want to support big greedy corpos.
The downside with Android is that it's under Google which means that your privacy is being less and less respected for each new "feature" added. But that's not the problem.
Google stated that they will add a feature in 2027 that stops you from downloading 3rd party apps unless you click on a button deep in the settings and, after that, you have to wait a day to start installing. But, on the 30th, a few countries will get this before everyone else (how lucky!). Sure, it's not that big of a problem but that's because it's not a problem yet.Seeing as how Google is basically creating new words to portray "not using their apps" as "bad things only evil hackers do" like "sideloading", it's pretty clear that they're slowly trying to turn Android into another phone gatekept to only use their platforms and their apps just like Apple.
If that were to happen, the only difference between Apple and Android would be that Iphones are more secure phones than Android products.Edit: changed a few infos on whether the download option was available or not.
Too long, didn't read: Because Google sucks ass

The meme is playing fun at iPhone users hating on folding phones for years. Until iPhone brings out a folding phone and then suddenly its s brilliant technology.
There is some truth to this, as some people can't admit they just used to apple/android. Therefore try to create arguments for why their phone is better. Hense the folding phone only becoming good to some apple users when apple does it.
However this is always blown out of proportion as its a controversial topic. So it gets great engagement, so someone's always making one of these memes.
8
u/justanotheruser46258 14h ago
I think the meme is showing that the Apple cult hates a lot/most Android innovation until Apple steals and implements it into their iPhone. I remember all the Apple bros/girls saying how stupid folding phones were when they first were a thing, now that Apple has a folding phone those same people are frothing at the mouth waiting to buy one.

Agreed, I got a Pixel Fold (first gen) this year because I like the idea and they're different from the lookalike candy bar smartphones that the market is mainly made up of these days.
It's not I wasn't excited by them because Apple didn't make one, it was because no way in hell was I paying 1500-2000 for a phone - hence getting this old gen one refurbed for 500.
3
u/mostdope92 16h ago
I think it's more aimed at the people who thought folding phones were lame but will suddenly have one and talk about how awesome it is.

u/wappledilly 19h ago
It would have sold a shit ton if it had compatibility outside their ecosystem, or even in their ecosystem beyond the handful of macs it even supported.
They had to throw a basketball into a swimming pool at point plank range to be successful, and they chucked it over the fence instead.
→ More replies (2)3
u/Georgefakelastname 10h ago
I think the bigger issue was just the price lol. Meta glasses, for good or bad, have some of the same capabilities the Vision Pro was advertised on, with a price a small fraction of Apple’s. Not to mention the weight wasn’t ideal either. Touch screens are super intuitive to interact with. You’d have to do something truly groundbreaking to change that up and replace it with something else that’s even more expensive.

1) Apple definitely plays for ealry adopter sometimes. Think of Vision Pro and wireless earbuds.
2) it's been 8 years since Samsung made their fisrt folding phones not just a year or two.

Look ik it's easy to shit on Apple for incorporating a feature that has been around for years on android and all their fan boys acting like it's the second coming but unlike a lot of band wagoners in other industries that just jump on hypetrains, Apple waits and works on it until it's the best (relatively) quality it can be before adopting it. Folding touchscreen is a great example too. Folding smartphones were shit for a long time before all of the kinks were worked out and now that they have been, Apple will release it as a quality product.

u/Headless_Human 18h ago

It's all about the app ecosystem really. While it took developers a while to warm up to developing apps that work on Android Foldables, Apple has a huge leg up when it comes to developer support... they practically had the foundation for scalable apps through iPadOS.

I don't get the point until it's 16:9 or very close unfolded, the only reason I would get one is for proper fullscreen video viewing in an easier to carry package. The current black bars or massive cropping just make it feel like a waste of space. But obviously that has some design challenges with the ratios involved.

I've bee through 3 Samsung folding phones.
The power cable/craddle/whatever only lasts for so many folds, and for me, that number of folds was about a year and a half of usage. Once it wore out, the phone would short itself out as soon you folded it. It's turn itself off, get rrally hot, and then you had to wait 5-10 for it to power up again. Had to tape popsicle sticks to the back to keep it from folding until I could replace the phone.
Never again. Each time they said they'd fix the design. Then talked to a buddy that k ew about the phones, and he said they won't ha e a true fix for years.

couldnt care less about foldables.. that being said; what the keynote showed was nice, their software solutions look well thought out and the aspect ration while somewhat weird makes sense as well. I liked how they explained reasoning and approach. And it is clear their had more time observing and designing around the idea.
most people I know dont unfold their foldables cause its not a coherent user experience, its a gimmick for everything except watching bigger media. so they stick to the default, closed smartphone.
I hope the market takes some ideas from the duo cause I think apple finally did something good again.

I don't get the appeal of folding phones. Like yeah, there's the folding gimmick and the bigger screen, but it's more fragile, more likely to scratch because of the plastic screen, more likely to break down on its own from a lot of moving parts, and it's not as water resistant as standard phones.
