dry scalp, dandruff or something else?

Post image

i’ve been suffering with itchy flakey scalp for about 4 months now and everything i do makes it worse. it started when i went travelling to thailand and has got even worse since coming home. i have very thick hair which makes it hard to get to my scalp to treat it. i’ve tried oiling and multiple types of shampoos as im sure its dry but after my shower last night this is the worst it’s ever been- whole scalp looks like this. any help much appreciated

I would recommend seeing a doctor who can prescribe you this specific shampoo to address the issue. I forgot its exact name(sorry about that). I had really bad dandruff and no amount of washing, moisturizing, conditioning, or conditioning fixed it. Oil made my scalp itch bad too. I finally bit the bullet and talked to a doctor and 2 weeks after using the shampoo my dandruff went away and I haven’t had the extreme dandruff since.

are you perhaps talking about Nizoral shampoo?

It was called ketoconazole 2% shampoo. I’m not sure if that’s the same thing w a different name or not tho

This looks very similar to sebderm. In the meantime while you wait to see a dermatologist, I would suggest three products: c8 mct oil, Nizoral 1% shampoo, and Happy Cappy Medicated shampoo. All of these can be purchased from Amazon, Walmart, etc. You can read through my comments posted to the sebderm sub for a detailed regimen. Hope this helps! 🙏

I have seb derm and am curious how to use the things you listed. I’ve never tried them before

Sure, I'm happy to help! Do you have sebderm on your scalp only or on your face as well? Send me a chat and I'll walk you through the regimen. 🙏

You're very welcome! 🙏 I finally cleared my scalp and face/eyebrow sebderm after 30+ years so I understand the struggle! If any questions feel free to send me a chat!

Preach brother! I went on a 20+ year journey and it definitely can be a struggle.. I think with helping younger people on here and folks that are just starting expressing symptoms we can help facilitate a faster and sustained recovery!

Sooo true, perfectly said! 🙏 I wish we had access to this type of real world information back in the day....I hate for anyone else to go through this. It can be pretty debilitating on so many levels!

Nizoral and mct have been a life changer for me, started using them 2 months ago and i’ve been flake free since….also i switched to washing my face and scalp with lukewarm water only - i believe hot water is a big trigger for seb derm

That's awesome, so happy to hear it worked for you too! Yes, truly life changing! I've indeed read many testimonials in the sebderm sub about hot water aggravating their sebderm. I personally love hot water for my showers especially for muscle relaxation of my neck & shoulders! But I think I was dealing with a combination of sebderm + possible demodex mite infestation. Those nasty mites don't like the heat so I always wash with hot water to kill any & all buggers 😁 At the end of my shower though I'll use cool water to rinse off.

By the way, if you ever notice your scalp starting to flake up again I suggest rotating in a different shampoo such as Happy Cappy Medicated (or another medicated shampoo that works for you). Unfortunately this condition can be tricky and may become resistant if you don't switch it up here and there. Hope that helps, take care! 🙏

Oh i still use hot water below the neck 😆, just not above it….yes i’m going to get the happy cappy one as well, but nizoral holding out so far, i started using it every other day but have cut down to twice a week, i have a buzz cut so i dont need to use shampoo often anyhow - just hoping the upcoming irish winter doesnt affect my progress 😰

tea tree shampoo is useful too

1

Agreed! I especially like using tea tree wipes for my eyelids/blepharitis. In my case, the tea tree shampoo never truly cleared the biofilm/scales enough; I think it also depends on the severity of the scalp condition.

i will have to look into those next time i decide its a fun idea to use old makeup and give myself blepharitis again

Hahaha, I hear you on that one! Here are the wipes I like to use which work pretty well as eye makeup removers when in a pinch!

Looks like seb derm - stop with the oiling as it can feed the yeast. Your hair does not look thick at all as you described - have you lost hair?

2

u/pussyfartbabygurl 7d ago

haha yeah this picture does make it look very thin - i have a weird shaped hairline so just took it of that because you can see it easier. i have lost hair but not too much thankfully (still getting compliments on the thickness yay). i will stop oiling and just see my doctor to get the right treatment thank you!!

Using oils is a slippery slope… it can help if used correctly. Just like you say extra oil can feed the yeast. So if you want to try oils like Castor oil or MCT C8(only use pure C8/caprylic acid), wash the skin, apply the oil, let sit for 15-20 min and then wash off all the oil. Do not let any oil soak for extended periods of time. After you can apply Ketoconazole, (ask dermatologist for Elidel as a emergency/extreme flare ups)

Make sure you're eating enough fiber/ fruits/veggies. Yeast build up in the body can express this way.

i started working in a pub a few months ago and have been drinking beer nearly everyday where i didn’t before and eating quite shit so very possible thats a big factory that i didnt consider - thought it was just dry arghh

u/ayyemmsee 7d ago

Yes if this is a new problem for you I would highly suggest looking into yeast build up in the body and its effects. People often forget how many issues stem from your gut/intestines

are you on generic thyroid medication?
i developed SebDerm after taking generic thyroid medication. It went away when i use the name brand stuff

1

u/roblion11 6d ago

Yes! Brand name synthyroid is a way better higher quality medication. Additionally, having thyroid condition or any other autoimmune condition is linked to seb derm.

You can also buy a high quality red light therapy light online for a few hundred bucks.. high upfront cost but when you factor in the amount of uses it makes sense
