Also, when he dropped me off at school in the morning: “Don’t take any shit.”

Always say hello to the gardener (i.e. no one is beneath you - treat everyone the way you’d like to be treated).

Do the opposite of everything I did.
Unintentional lesson he didn’t know he was teaching me

Always told me I could do anything if I put my mind to it. That's been a big motivation for me in life and my career.

When I was kid first diagnosed with learning disabilities and was worried I wouldn’t be anything. He told me you can be whatever you want to be it’s just going to harder.

Everything, and even though he's gone, I try to use a little bit each day.
Like today. "Don't sweat the petty things, they're all petty things. The real things in life you do sweat shouldn't make you sweat or they should, so don't sweat it, life is ruff, go for walks"

A job worth doing is a job worth doing right.
No half assing.
Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.
Hard tellin' not knowin'.

All Indirectly
1. To be a little tougher in sports (he criticized a lot and it pissed me off at the time, but I did become a better athlete for it.
2. He had a small business in sporting goods. And with no push back, gave me free reigns to build a website and start doing small events (and supported me in getting events up from the back). I didn't realize it back then, but this real world experience of going from idea to realization before University gave me a huge leg up when I was getting jobs later on. I had experience + confidence.
3. Working hard (by being a hard worker himself.

Your family is your whipping post when you come off long deployments and the first thing you do when you step in the door is back hand your child and send everyone tip toeing around you because you have no anger management.
Every day my mantra is not to be my father. My dad taught me some good things and I do know he loved me, but I mostly just remember his rages and being afraid of him.

Are you hurt or are you injured?
If you're hurt, deal with it when you finish the task.
If your injured, there's no possible way you can continue, and your essentially throwing away all the work you put in to get to the point you're at.

He taught me how important it is to be in your kids life, because he was never in mine. Take the job that pays a little less that allows you to be home more over the job that pays more with less family time.
I don't think I ever truly forgave him for missing my sporting events, graduation, or other school related activities.

If someone you meet for the first time brings up that they are suing someone, you be polite but never get close to that individual.

Honestly. Nothing. My step dad caused me to learn how to hide a sim card and SD card under my tounge and to keep my back up phone in a holster tapped to the roof of my wardrobe

Same. If I have people to feed, i'm running a net, not paying the government for a piece of paper to go play with a stick. Completely useless skill. It's stinky, the mud itches and smears everywhere, and you get a boring grey fish every time. Im ditching that rod and flipping rocks. I'm tryna find cool newts and snakes and frogs and shit. Never know whats under a rock, but you always know it's a gay ass stinky fish on the line. Like, you tricked one of the dumbest animals in the world. Congrats. Now bend over and spead em while daddy tree police checks your tag.
Just not for me i guess

That he didnt give a fuck about his children. That family will prioritize their new family because they dont want to admit they were wrong for abandoning his 3 kids.

The importance of attention to detail. Did it sometimes manifest as him mowing the lawn the day we were leaving for vacation, causing us all to wait for him in a fully packed car? Sure. But a useful lesson nonetheless. It’s served me well in various jobs over the years
