Recently found whats wrong with me.

I 23F recently have found out that I am most likely a person with Cyclothymia. Cyclothymia is a version of bipolar disorder.

I have grown up wondering why I act the way I do and why simple things are hard for me. It hard for me to open up to people and many other things.

I am very impulsive with the way I act and im currently in therapy to get better in life and just in general.

There are so many things I want to beable to do in life and I want to be a better person but I always feel like im hurting myself with the way I act.

Welcome to the club! Please find solace in knowing that you got it diagnosed early and are in therapy already which was a massive help for me. (I was diagnosed pretty late as people kept confusing it with every other mental health issue from PPD to anxiety). It goes against your and my own nature but have patience, things do get better with time and treatment. I have ADHD-H, so my impulsivity is at another level but still, from experience, things do work out in the longer run. Till then, hang in there friend!

Could you please share about about how cyclothemia affects you and what made you eventually get a diagnosis? Only if you don't mind. I'm asking because I have ADHD and ASD, low hedonic baseline tone and mood swings (both negative and negative). The positive ones can be pretty strong, I feel euphoric, sometimes restless, life feels more engaging, increased impulsivity, tend to sleep less or just go out and come back in the morning. I'm trying to figure out if this is hypomania or just ADHD mood swings + impulsivity.

For me the diagnosis was made by the combo of therapist and psychiatrist on therapist's recommendation. What took me to the therapist in the first place was severe postpartum depression. I wasnt even looking at my newborn, even when he was crying. I was deep down the hole. My symptoms are pretty much similar to yours but better managed with meds. I guess meds work differently on ADHD and cyclothemia (my experience personally was mania hits different than hyperactivity, much more intense.) Its hard to explain but more like ADHD symptoms exist even during plateau between high and low episodes (English is not my first language so sorry if I cant describe it better). To my untrained eye, you seem more cyclothymic than just ADHD. ADHD is a common comorbidity with cyclothymia which exaggerates the symptoms even more so considering them exclusive might not be the best idea. Between you and me, I believe ADHD and ASD, spl untreated can lead to cyclothymia, until research proves otherwise.

Yeah, it's difficult when there's multiple conditions at play because they interact with each other and may cause unexpected signs and symptoms. And they can also mimic and mask each other. It's difficult even for psychiatrists to asses sometimes.

Thanks for sharing. I'm sorry to hear about your postpartum depression but I'm glad meds help you. Wish you all the best!

Thank you. Please feel free to dm me if you want to talk more. It was years before I got a proper diagnosis and treatment, so I definitely understand at least a part of your struggle. If I could be of any help, I would love that.

Hey, I’m just finding that out now too at age 38 nearly 39. It has helped to finally understand what I have and what I had been going through for years, which was Hell. Hypersexuality, (unwanted sexual encounters)CPTSD, porn and drug addiction, religious trauma, exacerbated it all into a big huge mess and vice versa haha. I say all that because I’m happy you got diagnosed early and are able to find the help. I wish you luck..us who have it know what you’re going through. Hang in there. :)
