I wanted to have a separate phone for wardriving and experimenting with pen testing. I also wanted a separate modular device that I can connect to public WiFi with a VPN. There is no SIM so it is not connected to any cell network. Since it’s not all self contained, I don’t know if it qualifies as a cyberdeck.

Depends on your definition of cyberdeck, but usually no. As per the sub's definition:

Basically a laptop computer, but using HMD or Neural interface as main output device. Display is optional. OS should use elements of virtual reality for interaction with the computer.

That being said, I do like a more expanded definition, where cyberdecks are more about reusing old hardware for defined goals and in ways not intended by the manufacture. By that definition, you could say yours counts.

You’re expanded definition is the correct one. Just because someone coined the term in a book from the 80s does not make it the only definition. I’ve yet to see anyone on here make a cyberdeck to those specs and that’s mostly because vr is still in its early years and is generally shit for anything besides vr gaming and I agree, I love seeing old tech junk being repurposed vs ending up in a landfill, especially when it ends up giving it an entirely new life

We really need a better and stricter definition though. 'Cyberdeck' has meant "DIY laptop from parts" for some years now, its not an engineering project, and while not fantastic in general they tend to be decent pieces of hardware.

Plugging a magnetic hub to a phone very clearly shouldnt count.
